Cal State institute to teach advanced placement instructors
Javascript disabled. Cannot display HTML ad. By: JESSICA MUSICAR - For the North County Times SAN MARCOS In rigorous courses such as advanced placement classes, which give students college credit for passing an end-of-the-year exam, teachers need to be trained much like their students if they hope to give teenagers the best possible chance to score well.
To help new and experienced advanced placement teachers, Cal State San Marcos will offer a week-long AP Summer Institute from July 24-29, to educate instructors on the ins and outs of advanced placement teaching and how to best instruct their students.Ý Ý Although there is no requirement for AP teachers to take such a workshop, it is highly recommended by the College Board, a 100-year-old nonprofit educational organization that created the AP program. The institute offers 20 subjects, including art history, biology, physics, chemistry, environmental science, English, U.S. government, U.S. history, world history, economics, computer science, calculus, French and Spanish.

The J ournal for M ulti M edia H istory
Volume 1 Number 1 ~ Fall 1998 Teaching Islamic Civilization with Information Technology Corinne Blake N ew types of information technology such as the Internet and CD-ROM can be used to enhance courses in colleges and universities. A large amount of primary material about Islam and Islamic civilizations, for example, is available to students through the Internet, including full texts of the Qur'an in various translations, several collections of Hadith (records of the Prophet Muhammad’s words and deeds), Shi`i and Sufi religious texts, and classics works of Islamic literature. Since this material is mostly translated, it is of limited interest to advanced graduate students, but it is appropriate for undergraduate courses on Islamic religion, history, and civilization as well as for survey courses in world history. Using material from the Internet provides students with access to primary sources and research material that is often unavailable at smaller institutions. It can also expose students to different points of view within the Muslim community. The challenge for already overextended professors is figuring out how to locate these materials and incorporate them into courses. After reviewing primary source material for teaching Islamic civilization that is available online, I'll discuss methods and issues related to incorporating Internet material into courses. Announcing
World History for Us All
http://worldhistoryforusall.sdsu.edu The Department of History at San Diego State University and the National Center for History in the Schools at the University of California, Los Angeles, announce the launching of World History for Us All , a web-based model curriculum for world history in middle and high schools. World History for Us All will be available to all educators and the public on 15 July 2004 K-12 history and social studies educators are looking for ways to teach world history that are coherent, logical, and engaging for students. World History for Us All offers an innovative model for conceptually integrated study of the human past from remote times to the present. As a field of teaching and learning, world history ideally embraces all humanity. To make the global past intelligible, teachers must define concrete subject matter, questions, time periods, and themes, then investigate them in systematic ways. Too often, teachers find themselves moving from one topic, country, and civilization to another arbitrarily and to the neglect of larger patterns of historical meaning. World History for Us All connects subject matter anchored in specific times and places to a conceptual frame of guiding ideas and organizational tools.

page summary
The starting point of teaching is the meaningful understandings that students need in order to live effectively in the world. The body of knowledge described here supports such meaningful learning. Considerable agreement exists about the body of knowledge to be taught in world history classrooms. It consists of:
-Chronological narrative
-Conceptual frameworks
-Thinking strategies Nonetheless, confusion reigns in the field of history education. Sam Wineburg writes: "... students experience a haphazard diversity, a hodgepodge of different views..." Teachers we have a responsibility to bring coherence to schooling. History and geography are the core of the social studies curriculum. World history and geography are inseparable. 2004 Michael G. Maxwell What to teach: a body of knowledge:
overview chronological narrative conceptual frameworks thinking strategies What to teach: an overview Meaning as the basis of teaching As educators we tend to focus on what to teach rather than on what students need to learn. This is a crucial distinction. If the purpose of schooling is to prepare young people for life, then clearly our curricula must be driven by the meaningful understandings students need in order to live effectively in the world, not by pre-conceived notions about content or strategies. We believe teachers should fundamentally shift their thinking and work back from the needs of students to the assessments, lessons and materials that will effectively convey meaningful learning to students.

When your student watches the news do they know (and understand) where it is happening? Proximity is important—understanding geography helps to explain why Zimbabwe is not much like Moscow, but shares characteristics with Egypt. It is important to understand things and places which are close, and those which are far apart. The horror and sorrow of September 11, 2001 will be with us for a long time. Almost all news now is international news. Our children and students need to know what is happening in their country and their world. The first part of knowing our world, and understanding what will happen now, is to know where places are. It is easy to fail to recognize the humanity of other peoples when we do not even know where they live. American men and women are now fighting far from home; we owe it to them to at least know where they are. Maps are vital to our understanding geography and the world we live in. They can be beautiful and fascinating, but if they are completely unfamiliar it can be difficult to learn from them.
