« Making Your Agency Virtually Accessible to People with Disabilities
Main Introduction to Sample Online Assignments » Working with Online Volunteers who have Disabilities Online volunteering programs can allow for the greater participation of people who might find volunteering difficult or impossible because of a disability. This in turn allows organizations to benefit from the additional talent and resources of more volunteers, and allows agencies to further diversify their volunteer talent pool. Just as building designs can help persons in wheelchairs to navigate doorways, there are ways to accommodate persons with disabilities to serve in virtual volunteering programs. Harris poll results from June of 2000 report that 48 percent of people with disabilities who have access to the Internet believe that it has significantly improved their quality of life, compared 27 percent of the adults without disabilities. Therefore, people with disabilities already see the true value of online communications, and are in a prime position to provide volunteering via the Internet. People with disabilities volunteer for the same reasons as anyone else: they want to contribute their time and energy to improving the quality of life. They want challenging, rewarding, educational service projects that address needs of a community and provide them with outlets for their enthusiasm and talents.

Organizer and Activist Resources: Working with Volunteers
All Earth Day events should be structured as a way for volunteers to participate. On some projects volunteers do everything including planning, logistics, execution and follow-up. The following are guidelines can assist in finding and keeping volunteers.
Finding Volunteers
Seek volunteers from your local Jaycees, scout troops, environmental groups, high schools, colleges and adult development centers. Advertise for volunteer support in club and agency newsletters. Send out public service announcements to local papers, stating your needs and advertising your meetings. Look beyond existing sources for volunteers. Earth Day is an ideal opportunity for interested, committed citizens who have never volunteered before. To aid recruiting and tracking, you may want to design a volunteer information form. The form should have spaces for name, address, day and evening phone numbers and jobs people want to do or special skills they have (see sample that follows). This way, you can develop a working "database" of volunteers and match tasks to people's skills.
Public Volunteer Meetings
Public meetings are an excellent way to recruit volunteers. Frequently, it is possible to obtain meeting spaces free of charge at city or county facilities, private companies, public libraries or private homes.

It's critical to ensure that the methods your organization uses to recruit, train and support these volunteers reflects a well organized and caring organization.
Recruiting for Success
Before you begin to recruit volunteers for the various duties within your organization, it's wise to consider the following:
  • What specific tasks need to be done?
  • Which tasks should be done by volunteers?
  • When, where and how do we recruit volunteers?
  • Who recruits volunteers in our organization?
  • Who will train the volunteers?
  • Who will supervise the work of the volunteers?
Let's face it, not everyone enjoys searching out individuals to help do a job (asking someone to volunteer). Recruiting volunteers can be a time consuming process. Unfortunately, it often becomes a case of looking for a "warm body", somebody, anybody, to get the job done.
Why Recruit?

Working with Volunteers
Reliability One of the major problems with volunteers is that they often have other commitments and this can mean that they are not as reliable as paid workers although this is not always the case. If you are planning an education and family learning programme, you do need to ensure that there is going to be a minimum staff cover at events so you need to make your volunteers aware of the responsibility of committing themselves to activities. You also need to ensure that anyone taking on a supervisory or instructional role can cope with handling groups of lively children. It often seems easy from the outside! Suitability
If you are actively looking for volunteers to assist in an education programme try the local volunteer bureau because they have experience of handling potential volunteers and matching them to suitable activities. This will help to avoid situations where s volunteer starts to work with you and turns out to be unsuitable for the post which can cause problems if they are then moved to something else. It may be possible to start a volunteer on a systematic scheme of work across all museum disciplines to ascertain their suitability for a particular placement first, thereby avoiding difficult situations. "Utilizing Technology for Volunteer - Involving Organizations", paper by Mark Gannon March 2001
ICT as Resource "Perhaps the greatest benefit of information and communication technologies (ICT) is the capacity to share information" (Rykert 1999, p180). This may be an active process in that people become involved in online networking specifically to share information or it may be more passive in that people simply put information 'out there' in the hope that it will be discovered. However, ICT should be used in a strategic way to meet the needs of volunteer-involvers and volunteers whether actively or not. Web-based resources are also extremely important and can take various forms. They can include resources for volunteers managers, volunteers or others like researchers and policy makers. There are many 'good-practice' type websites online offering advice on how to recruit volunteers, how much expenses to pay or how to draw up a volunteer agreement. There are also links to books online with some excellent online bibliographies and sometimes the full text or summaries of publications. The Internet is also an excellent place to find data on volunteering. Many of the voluntary sector and volunteering representative and intermediary bodies have online resources as do many of the worlds volunteer centres. Some of the national volunteer centres have extremely advanced websites with very useful resources.
