Dedicated to providing parents with information about Down syndrome.
http://www.downsyn.com

"Just when you think you have learned what you need to know in life,
someone truly special comes into it and shows just how much more there is."
On April 11, 1997, our son Michael was born. Mikey is a wonderful little boy and we love him with all our hearts. Mikey has Down Syndrome. This web site will attempt to be a resource for new parents of children with Down Syndrome. We will also try to provide a personal perspective by explaining how this has affected us and what it is like to be the parent of a child with Down Syndrome. Book of the Month for August 2005
    The Best Worst Brother
    Written by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen
    Illustrated by Charlotte Fremaux
    Woodbine House
In this sequel to the popular storybook We’ll Paint the Octopus Red , Isaac is almost three years old and Emma is in elementary school. Emma misses the adoring baby brother Isaac used to be. Now that he’s older, he’s a pain. Emma used to be able to make Isaac laugh. He used to let her hold him without squirming. But no more. Now Isaac spits out his food and knocks down her blocks when Emma tries to play with him. Sometimes his behavior is downright embarrassing. Emma thinks Isaac would be more fun if he’d hurry up and learn some of the sign language she and her mom are trying to teach him. His slower pace is maddening at times! The Best Worst Brother is an endearing and realistic look at how a relationship evolves between a typically developing older sister and her younger brother with a developmental disability. It also shows how sign language can help a child that acquires speech more slowly. As Emma is pleased to discover, Isaac can learn to sign, he just learns when he’s ready.

Supporting Your Adolescent: Tips for Parents
Adolescence is a time for young people to define their place in the family, peer groups, and the larger community. During this stage of their lives, youth struggle with the transition from childhood to adulthood. During childhood, they depended mainly on their parents for economic and emotional support and direction. In adulthood, though, they will be expected to achieve independence and make choices about school, work, and personal relationships that will affect every aspect of their future. Without question, adolescence is a difficult time for many young people. During this period, they must contend with physical changes, pressure to conform to current social trends and peer behaviors, and increased expectations from family members, teachers, and other adults. Adolescents also must deal with sometimes conflicting messages from parents, peers, or the media. They struggle with an increasing need to feel as if they "belong." Young people also feel pressure to perform academically or socially. For some young people, the usual challenges of adolescence are compounded by difficult family situations, overcrowded classrooms, disintegrating neighborhoods, or exposure to alcohol or other drugs. Without support and guidance, these young people may fall victim to behaviors that place them, and others, at risk. In our society, those behaviors include dropping out of school, running away from home, joining gangs, and using alcohol or drugs or becoming involved in other law-breaking behaviors. Some youth may become despondent, leading to academic problems, social isolation, or self-destructive behavior.

168. Parents Help Line
Humorous advice on surviving having teenage children.
http://parentshelpline.com/
Do you pine for the good old days when kids did as they were told, always kept their room tidy, and loved spending their weekends helping out with chores around the house? If you do, why not write to us about your situation and let our resident guru, Karl, give you some advice that will put you back in control. Have a look below at this week's letters; you might find that your problem has already been solved!
Dear Karl,
I've got a couple of young teenagers who are always whining about wanting more "freedom". They want to be able to stay out as late as they like, do whatever they want, and go wherever they want. How can I teach them that they are too young for all this "freedom"? Bob P. NH.

Well, Bob, my advice is to give them so much freedom that they won't ever pester you for it again. Here's the plan: Take them for a drive into your nearest wilderness area, making sure that you end up at least two hundred miles from civilization. When you get to an area that looks like it's got plenty of drinking water and not too many bears or mountain lion, drop them off and tell them you'll be back in a week's time.
Depending on just how obnoxious they have been, you might choose to leave them a tent, sleeping bags, a box of matches, and a Swiss Army knife. If you're a real softie you could even leave them a few cans of baked beans. This is guaranteed to teach them that "freedom" isn't all it's cracked up to be. Believe me, they'll thank you for it one day.

Asperger's Syndrome may be a newly defined disability,

It's just that those of us who were raised by odd, eccentric parents now have a new name for the old "Family Problem".

C oncern for the newly ill person can be so great that the needs of children get overlooked. This may not matter for a few days or even weeks, but how can we ensure that the impact of parent long-term illness does not harm the child? Coping with sick parents Adult carers have a lot to cope with. But children whose parents fall ill have a whole range of additional problems heaped on them. When I read stories of child-carers I am filled with admiration for their dedication to the task and the love they express for their dependent mother or father. I myself know two children whose father is severely disabled and it is awe-inspiring to watch the way they look after their father. It has to be said though that not all children re-act with caring compassion, and perhaps a more common set of emotions are frustration, resentment and embarrassment. Lets look at some of the things children have to cope with when their parents become chronically sick and also think about how the difficulties can be reduced.
