La Quinta
The Coalition of Citizens Who Talk Too Loudly Outside of Motel Rooms gathered at the La Quinta in Williamsburg, Virginia this weekend to remind the public that the world is a noisy place and that if they wanted quiet they should have stayed at home.
“We’re not trying to cause any trouble,” said Coalition president, Robert Johnston. “It’s just that God gave us a mouth to speak with and by gum we’re gonna use it – whenever and wherever we need to.” The whenever and wherever of our interview began on the second floor hallway of this aging budget motel, outside of room 216, early on Sunday morning as Robert and his wife, Lydia, prepared to check out.
“Sorry about the early hour,” Robert apologized, “but if we don’t get a move on we’ll hit church traffic in Richmond.” Abruptly, he turned his attention to Lydia, who was still packing up inside the room. In a cavernous, baritone voice, he bellowed, “Honey, don’t forget my toothbrush and electric razor.” I’ve got them , Lydia yelled back with a shrill. An occupant in room 214 cracked his door open the width of the chain lock and admonished us to keep it down.

Documentary Description What I Want My Words to Do to You offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright Eve Ensler, consisting of fifteen women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women, including former Weather Underground Members Kathy Boudin and Judith Clark, delve into and expose the most terrifying places in themselves, as they grapple with the nature of their crimes and their own culpability. The film culminates in an emotionally charged prison performance of the women's writing by acclaimed actresses Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Rosie Perez, Hazelle Goodman, and Mary Alice.

To Guide Entry
It is a truth universally acknowledged (among teachers) that when you have taught a particular curriculum for a number of years it tends to stultify, even though one of the pleasures of teaching lies in the fact that nothing is ever quite the same two years running, because the children are endlessly variable. But because you are always busy with papers to grade and records to keep and the minutiae of classroom management, you tend to use the same materials and books and perhaps the same old tried-and-true approach. So it has been for me with Social Studies, in my 4th grade classroom. At our school this subject takes a back seat to heavy emphasis on Language Arts and Math, with Music as a major subject taking up quite a few periods each week. And so I confess I have taken the easy way out for several seasons now. We are provided with A Book. I have stuck to The Book. But this past school year, a delightful experience in playwriting, stimulated by the Yale Children’s Dramat’s contest for elementary school playwrites, has given me the wish to try it again (my young writers won three of the prizes)—but this time, to use plays in a different way—to use theater arts in general, and playwriting as well, to make my tired Social Studies unit “come alive.” I should be able to cover the necessary concepts, and to practice teaching an integrated day at the same time, something I aim at but don’t always manage too well. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, an integrated day is one in which your subjects—reading, writing, spelling, math, etc.—all revolve around one theme. Each subject becomes an aspect of the major theme you have chosen to emphasize that day.
