The first and most important qualification is a no brainer. You must love the theater, know enough about dramas and musicals to offer intelligent appraisals, and like writing. The second must is reliability. When you commit yourself to seeing a show for us you agree to be at the theater on time. Being on time doesn't mean arriving at 8pm for an 8pm show, but at least fifteen minutes before. Length. Unlike in print publications CurtainUp allows you space to express yourself with a big cast play or musical, a review can go to 1500 words. In fact, we consider any review under 500 words a bit skimpy. The average length of our reviews is between 500 and 900 words. Format.

Playwriting at Indiana University
The Philosophical Basis
Certain university playwriting programs pride themselves on their determination to turn out "professional" playwrights as opposed to merely more teachers of playwriting. Other schools seem to abhor the very word "professional," recoiling from some imagined overtone of venality. Frankly, we at Indiana University regard such dichotomies as artificial and ultimately pointless. It is the intention of our program to seek out playwrights of demonstrable talent and drive, then to hone that talent to the point of "survivability." If that means passing along the secrets of the craft in an academic context, wonderful. If it also means having the ability and the knowledge to track down and secure agents, grants, prizes and productions in whatever venue, so much the better. One thing is certain: To be a playwright in this place and time requires pragmatism as well as idealism, resourcefulness as much as courage. If it takes talent and initiative to get into playwriting at Indiana, here are some of the things it will take to get out: A demonstrable mastery of the fundamentals of script construction, not only for the legitimate stage but for the screen as well; an awareness of current theatrical conventions and an ability to use and distort those conventions for full dramatic effect; a solid knowledge of dramaturgical techniques developed (and perhaps discarded) over the centuries; and a generosity of the spirit which will permit both compassionate critiques of your fellow students of the craft and a deep respect for your collaborators in the production process, be they actors, designers, directors, or administrators.

RITES OF SPRING
Though February did its cold and ugly worst, and March has blasted us with fierce arctic winds, there are harbingers of spring: the birds are chirping madly, the grass is turning green, the new baseball season is about to begin, and all is right with the world. Like John Fogerty sang, "We're born again, there's new grass on the field." I'm sorry for people who don't like baseball, because they will never really understand America. It doesn't matter that the Japanese and Cubans and Dominicans play it, and play it very well; baseball is our game, American to its core. It's THE game for eternal optimists. Every year, we put last season's failures behind and start over undefeated, full of hope that, as the New York Daily News proclaimed when the Brooklyn Dodgers finally won the pennant, "This Is Next Year."

There is a rather cryptic article in tomorrow's New York Times about Jack Abramoff's first brush with the Advertisement law back in 2002 and how he got unbrushed This is the case in late 2002, when the Acting US Attorney in Guam opened a criminal probe into Jack Abramoff's lobbying activities in the US Pacific island protectorate. Yet days after federal prosecutor Frederick A. Black notified the Justice Department's Public Integrity section of his inquiry into Abramoff, he was demoted. And his new bosses barred him from pursuing any other public corruption cases. That brought the entire Abramoff investigation to halt. Administration officials argue there was nothing out of the ordinary with an acting US Attorney being replaced by a permanent apppointee. But Black had been the 'Acting' US Attorney in Guam for

Latinate versus Germanic Diction.
English is an unusual language in that it derives from two main language families, Latinate and Germanic. Its origins are Germanic; in the fourth or fifth century, Old English or Anglo-Saxon was a Germanic dialect, a relative of modern German. (You wouldn't be able to read a word of it without a class in Old English. Here's the first sentence of the most famous Old English poem, Beowulf English . I warned you.) There was a later influx of Scandinavian words when the Vikings arrived, but the Scandinavian languages are also Germanic, so English remained fundamentally Germanic. (You can see how English is related to other Germanic languages, and other Indo-European languages generally, in an Indo-European Language Family Tree I've prepared.) two , one based on the Germanic original long used by the peasantry, another based on the French import that had currency in the court. (Later still, a great many words entered the language directly from Latin without stopping along the way at French, and sometimes we have near synonyms from all three origins: kingly [from Germanic royal [from Latin by way of French roy ], and
