  • Wooden Flute Maintenance
  • Climate Problems
    Wooden Flute Maintenance
This is PREVENTATIVE maintenance - cracks in flutes occur because simple precautions are not taken. So please take note of these points, which are collated from advice given by Williams, Ormiston and other experienced woodwind manufacturers:-
  • Always take the flute apart after playing. This allows the moisture to dry out better without getting into the wood. Store it away from extremes of temperature, and keep it wrapped in a cloth or in a case, so it can adjust gradually to climate changes.
  • Before assembling a new flute, grease the cork tenons with vaseline or cork grease. This will aid assembly and make the joints perfectly airtight. You should take great care at all times when assembling the flute, the joints should be brought together with a twisting motion and not pushed straight on.
  • Occasionally when the flute is dry - i.e before playing (it needs to be left a full day since it was last played), push through the wooden sections a cotton rag dampened with ALMOND OIL (from a chemist). This prevents moisture getting into the wood. You can also rub a little oil into the outside of the flute. The bore needs oiling once a week for a couple of months when the flute is new, then monthly, and finally after the first year, and for older flutes, six monthly will be often enough.
  • After playing remove excess moisture from the bore with a dry cotton rag on a pull through, or with a loose fitting flute mop. This prevents localised wet patches.

These instruments were originally made of wood but are now more commonly made of metal. The saxophone, made of metal, is an honorary woodwind instrument because it is related to the clarinet. The flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon make up the normal woodwind section of an orchestra. reed instruments , and those without a reed . In a reed instrument, the air enters the instrument through an opening with a single vibrating reed, or double reeds. This group includes the clarinet, oboe, cor anglais, saxophone, and bassoon. In instruments without a reed, the air enters the through a blowhole. This group includes flute, piccolo, and recorder. In both cases, different notes are produced by covering the holes along the instrument, which changes the length of the air column in the tube. A short air column gives a high note, and a long air column gives a low note.

Actually the term "woodwind" is one you have designated in your time for all pipe instruments in which the covering and uncovering of holes by movements of the fingers constitutes the primary means of making the notes of the scales. I have grouped our Renaissance instruments according to your terminology to make it easier for you to understand. The material of the pipe may be ivory, metal, glass, etc, though for most types the traditional material has been wood and makers generally serve their apprenticeship as wood turners. The way to make a sound with these instruments provides an additional way to group them: By blowing a jet of air onto a sharp edge provided by the instrument, as in recorders and flutes: Elizabeth on the Flute (sample sound included) Addame on the Recorder (sample sound included) By causing the airstream to set in vibration a "reed" made from natural cane cultivated for reed-making purposes in the South of France and elsewhere, as in the case of crumhorns, shawms, bagpipes, etc.: Sol on the Crumhorn (sample sound included) Elenore on the Shawm (sample sound included) William on the Glastonbury Pipe (sample sound included) Brian on the Bagpipe Morgana on the Racket ... Curtal There are also pipes which are fingered as other pipes but are sounded like brass instruments by vibration of the player's lips across a mouthpiece cup. Such are the cornett and the serpent and they can also be classed with the brass instruments.

Welcome Follow the links via the navigation bar to your own instrument to find out about the kind of work I do, as well as tips on care of instruments and links to other related sites. In 1999 we moved to Devon, which involved the conversion of a blacksmiths forge into a workshop. Restoration work, particularly of instruments from the 18th & 19th centuries, is increasing all the time. These jobs I usually like to take plenty of time over. Sometimes there is no choice if I have to search for materials, but even then I tend to allow plenty of "thinking time" for each job. I also undertake custom work on all instruments, which includes the fitting of specialist thumbrests on clarinets, keywok extensions and other modifications to help people with injuries or disbalities to play an instrument. With an interest in both wind instruments and engineering, it seemed logical for me to study the making and repairing of them. To pursue this interest, I joined the most prestigious course in the UK, at Newark Technical College in 1986. From Newark I went to work full time in a specialist woodwind shop, setting up new instruments, repairing customers instruments and preparing used instruments for sale.

    Wind Instruments
    Flute
The flute is a very unique instrument, because instead of blowing into a reed to make noise, like most wind instruments, sound is produced by blowing across a sound hole at one end. The modern flute is held transversely, or across the player's face. To create different pitches, the flutist presses down keys on the instrument. Modern flutes are about two feet long, and come apart into three pieces for convenience. Theobold Boehm, a jeweler, engineer, and flutist in the 1800s, created a model of the flute that has hardly been improved on since. The modern flute has a range has a range of about three octaves, ranging from middle C (or the B one pitch below it) on the piano to three octaves above that.
There are many different kinds of flutes throughout the world. The Japanese flute is known as the shakuhachi, and it is not held transversely, but it is held to the front, and the end of the flute is blown across instead of a sound hole as in the orchestral flute. Another interesting kind of flute is the nose flute, which is played in Hawaii and Melanesia. To play, the flutist must plug one nostril and expel air through the other nostril into the flute. Although this kind of flute doesn't have very many keys, it can play a wide range of melodies.
    Recorder
The recorder is a woodwind that dates back to the 13th century. It is a relatively simple instrument with around seven finger holes and one thumb hole. To make a noise on the recorder, blow into the mouthpiece and move fingers over the finger holes to make different pitches. There are many different sizes of recorders, ranging from the bass to the soprano. Recorders are often used in schools to aid the teaching of general music. They are extremely easy to play regardless of hand size or embouchure.

    http://library.thinkquest.org/C006865/sci_woodwind.html
WOODWINDS Woodwind Instruments Woodwind instruments are not necessarily made of wood. The clarinet and oboe are made of wood, and use reeds to create air vibrations.
They consist basically of a tube, with a series of holes that can be closed. Air is blown into the tube across a flexible reed. This makes the air inside the tube vibrate and give out a note. The pitch of the note depends on the length of the tube, a shorter tube giving a higher note. Blowing harder makes the sound louder.
In the case of a flute or recorder, air is blown into an opening in one side of the tube to produce the vibrating air column. PADS AND KEYS
In a short and simple woodwind instrument like the recorder, fingers can easily cover all the holes directly.
Several woodwinds have holes that are larger than normal fingers, requiring the fingers to press on pads to cover the holes. Sprung keys attached to pads are used to cover holes cannot be reached by the fingers. SOUND FUNDAMENTALS
A cylindrical air column with both ends open will vibrate with a fundamental mode such that the air column length is one half the wavelength of the sound wave. Each end of the column must be an antinode for the air motion since the ends are open to the atmosphere and cannot produce significant pressure changes. For the fundamental mode, there is one node at the center. ALL HOLES COVERED
Covering all seven holes in a recorder makes the air in the whole tube vibrate, producing the note middle C.
