May 18, 1999 Woodcarving by Ed Bue Press Contact: Ramona Clark , Retail Operations Manager Mono Lake Committee www.monolake.org For Immediate Release Join woodcarver Ed Bue at the Mono Lake Committee in Lee Vining on Saturday, May 29 th as he demonstrates how his Birds In Motion emerge from wood blocks. Bue will be carving throughout the afternoon, and there will be a reception from 3-5pm. Bue began woodcarving in 1984, when he was forced into retirement due to illness from a career as an aeronautical engineer for Boeing Aircraft. Just prior to surgery, with the anticipation of a long recovery period, Ed set his hands in motion to make his recovery time more fulfilling. As he progressed, he discovered that birds, the messengers of the spirit and bearers of the soul, became a source of personal deliverance and inspiration, to which he could direct his new found skills. "My first bird carving was a White Swan. I first saw a White Swan at a show. It was love at first sight. The grace, the suppleness of the lines and technical challenge was too much…I had to carve it! Most of my inspiration comes from perusing photographs from libraries, visiting zoos, museums, sanctuaries, and watching what goes on around me in Nature. I look for a pose that displays the attitude and emotion. The action must be dramatic and expressive, like a freeze frame photograph. To display the primal emotions of survival is the ultimate challenge!"

128. The Art Of Wood
Fine relief woodcarvings based on works of art.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Cafe/3991/
Welcome to our virtual gallery!
We are glad to present here two recent works of
Mr. Lubomir Ivanov from Sofia, Bulgaria. This skillful woodcarver has had a most unusual life. Educated to be an electrical engineer, he lost the use of his right hand in an accident and had to reshape his life. Refusing to obey his disability, he turned to what hitherto had been his hobby, photography and, predominantly, woodcarving. He prefers black-and-white photography and his landscapes, townscapes and portraits meet the highest standards of graphic art. In woodcarving, he is even more ambitious, aiming to reproduce on wood the works of one of the greatest artists ever lived, Albreht Durer who Longfellow called "The Evangelist of art". Lubomir works painstakingly, with greatest attention to every detail. He tries to remain loyal to the original, reproducing it as close as possible. The only notable exception to this staunch rule of his is a detail in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse where he has bestowed the image of his own mother on the face of the female figure at the bottom center. Lubomir (Lubo) Ivanov will be pleased to welcome any interested party to his house.

Oaxaca woodcarvings are the best-selling Mexican folk art in the United States. Also known by the Spanish word "alebrijes," they are the ultimate collectible, prized for their originality and wild colors. Hand-carved, hand-painted, no two are exactly alike! The colonial city of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-HAH-ka) is nestled in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, six hours by bus south-east of Mexico City. It is known for its year-round Spring climate, cobblestone streets and marvelous stone buildings and plazas. In the nearby central valley, lives an indigenous population descended from the Mixtec and Zapotec Indians. Speaking 52 dialects of eight distinct languages, (in addition to Spanish) they are among the most inspired and talented craftspeople in all of Mexico. The variety and quality of Oaxacan woodcarvings, tin work, ceramics, baskets, leather and fiber products, and weavings and textiles, is amazing! WOODCARVINGS The artists who make these whimsical wooden figures live in three villages. The most picturesque and the closest to the city is called Arrazola. It lies in the shadow of Monte Alban, the ancient Zapotec holy city whose ruins overlook the valley from a nearby mountaintop. The other villages are San Martin Tilcajete and La Union Tejalapan, both about an hour's journey away from Oaxaca City. The tradition of woodcarving goes back generations, but it is only in the past decade that the colorful figures have become popular with collectors worldwide. Manuel Jimenez from Arrazola, now over 80 years old, rich and famous in artistic circles, is usually credited with starting the international craze for these woodcarvings. Other famous craftsmen include Gerardo Ramirez, Epifanio Fuentes, Manuel Jimenez, Justo Xuana and Jacobo Angeles (pictured above, with his son Ricardo). What started with a few families has almost taken over the economy of these three towns. The dusty, rocky roads that used to lead into the towns have now been neatly paved. The prosperity from the carvings is a dramatic turnaround for these villages where 15 years ago, many people were struggling to make a living.

Woodcarving and plasterwork were unique architectural features of the Utah Governor's Mansion. The original white oak carvings were of extraordinary quality. They were crafted in Europe at the turn-of-the-century, most likely by German or Austrian artisans. The fire destroyed most of these carvings, with the worst damage occurring in the Grand Hall where the Christmas tree stood. The burned carvings were sent to Agrell and Thorpe, Ltd., a Sausalito, California wood carving shop. According to master carver Ian Agrell, the replication of the Utah Governor's Mansion carvings constituted the largest wood carving project undertaken anywhere in the world in the past ten years. Agrell and Thorpe's 12 craftspeople spent close to 20,000 hours recreating the mansion's original carvings. Early on they discovered that modern tools could not improve on designs devised 100 years ago. They carefully examined the burned pieces, then copied the construction of each original carving exactly. The new carvings are nearly indistinguishable from the old. The firm also replicated stone carvings on columns on the upstairs south porch. As part of the mansion restoration, all interior surfaces had to be removed in order to clean soot and repair smoke damage. The unique ceiling plasterwork, however, was cleaned in place since it was determined that it could not be replicated. The exception was in the parlor where new plaster ceiling details had to be recreated based on historic photographs by Dick Cook and others working with Berger, Inc., of Salt Lake City.

The Cutting Edge of Woodcarving
Sanyi's Master Craftsmen
Photos by Sung Chih-hsiung If you love fine carvings and want to see thousands of amazing sculptures, you will enjoy a visit to Kuangsheng Village, Sanyi (¤T¸q¼sÁn·s«°). Not only can you see carvers at work, you will also save money by buying directly from the artists. Fifty of Taiwan's best carvers have been invited by the national government to live in this new village, crowned by the excellent Sanyi Woodcarving Museum.
The Kuangsheng Village is a great place to purchase excellent woodcarvings as well as see some of Sanyi's famous carvers at work. Sanyi is a small foggy town in the heart of Taiwan's Hakka country. Carvers began showing up there during the 1920s, to take advantage of the area's many camphor groves. At that time Taiwan was occupied by Japan, and Japanese buyers had a particular fondness for camphor wood sculptures. Camphor resists insects, so it's also used in temple construction and furniture. After the Chinese Nationalist government moved to Taiwan in 1949, mainland-born artists settled around Sanyi. They brought in new knowledge and developed styles that pleased mainlanders. During the Vietnam War, the area's carvers concentrated on the production of pieces that appealed to American G.I.s. Two hundred shops lined the main road during those high times. When the soldiers left, Sanyi's fortunes declined. It is only recently that things have picked up again. Carving nowadays differs from the past. Now, Taiwanese artists seek personal expression and the development of their own unique styles. To insure that carvers reach the highest possible levels of achievement, the government built Kuangsheng Village. Here the whole village carves wood, exchanging creative ideas and experimenting together. It's not far from Taipei and Taichung, offering buyers one-stop shopping for sculptures of great quality.
