Stan Fillingsness
Norwegian Woodcarving
Stan Fillingsness looks over a Norwegian woodcarving pattern book. Almost twenty years ago, Stan Fillingsness of Canton met Arnold Bortnem of Sioux Falls when he took a woodcarving class Arne was teaching. Now their roles have been reversed as Stan took Arne on as his apprentice in Norwegian woodcarving techniques. Arne is already an accomplished carver, and because of his own Norwegian heritage had always been fascinated by the traditional acanthus leaf style of that tradition, but couldn’t figure out on his own how to learn its intricacies. Stan has taken classes with master carvers from Norway, has traveled to Norway, and has a large collection of books and carving patterns, so he was the perfect teacher for Arne. And for Stan, Arne was the perfect student: “He was number one on my list of names. I knew he could do it, and I also know that he will pass it on to some other people.” Arne Bortnem carves a Norwegian acanthus leaf clock. Arne says he gained an in-depth understanding of the designs and techniques unique to Norwegian carving, learned the proper words and standards, and improved his skill. Arne’s projects included a clock, decorative spoon, traditional mangletre (board used to smooth clothes), and a kubbestol (traditional chair) as his final project. “I want to pick up a tool and make the type of cut that a master carver who did this kind of work would make, rather than chip and chisel away like most of us amateurs do,” he says.

I now use Elfwood as my carving homepage. You may link to it here:
Elfwood
I began carving in 1981, but did not develop more advanced skills until I took two summer courses at the Sawmill Center for the Arts (Cook Forest State Park, PA) under Larry Groeninger. From 85 to 89 I started going to shows in PA, NJ and Ohio. I won first in professional relief at all these and actually won a Best of Show at the 88 Sawmill Center Show. Had carvings featured in CHIP CHATS Magazine in the late 80s. Production has slowed considerably since I entered the PhD. Program in 1989 - I complete about 3 a year now so I don't sell any. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for stopping by!

Wispy's World of Woodcarving
This site should really be subject to frequent revision. I am my own web designer and I am usually befuddled with what to do to set up and keep this site current.
I just can't seem to find the time to do some much needed updating. So until I get a round toit (HEHEHE), this page will have to suffice. I have just made some deletions from my old site and will try to continue to do so on a regular basis.
April, 2002
Welcome to my home page. My name is Tony Wispinski and I am hooked on woodcarving, on teaching carving and writing about carving. I dream about carving, both the sleeping kind of dreams and day dreams. I talk and talk about carving, some people have said that I'm in a world of my own. My nickname has been Wispy for more years than I can remember. These are the main reasons for the title of my web site. If you take the time to travel in my world you will find information and some images abouta few interesting things, at least I think so. Personal links

191. Wooden Dreams Woodcarving
Gallery of Mike Bloomquist, with commentary, biography, and links.
http://www.borg.com/~bloomqum/index.htm
Welcome to the woodcarving web site of Mike Bloomquist. This is an excellent example of a hobby gone horribly out of control. I have received many awards and compliments on the quality of my work, but please keep in mind as you view this site that these pieces are the result of several years practice and lots of encouragement from God and others. Many times at demonstrations and shows, the reactions I hear to these are "I could never do that, I have no artistic ability". Neither do I! Some people are 'naturals', for the rest of us it just takes a little extra exercise, practice, and guidance. None of the carvings you see here would have happened without tons of support from my family, and the many friends, woodcarvers, and woodcarver friends I have around me. If you're a beginning carver or just thinking about starting, please visit the groups at the bottom of this page, and my links page. Try to find a woodcarver or a woodcarving club near you. In the area of sharing the knowlege, we seem to be a fairly homogeneous group. It's a rare woodcarver who isn't very eager to share the craft and help a novice into this wonderful art. If you find that occasional individual who will not share or doesn't feel qualified to teach you, find someone else. It will be worth the effort. Stay long, see much, and drop me some e-mail.
