Program of Concentration in American and Southern Studies The interdisciplinary major consists of 36 hours of course work, to be distributed among various disciplines and perspecitives as indicated below. Emphasis is on cultural, political, economic, and related trends or events that contribute to the making of American society and character in all its diversity. Students should expect to study the problems, developments, and crises of social history, technology, visual studies, gender, race, ethnicity, media, and artistic, political, and literary culture. Students must concentrate on a theme or topic of special interest. Much of the work in the concentration will lead to or inform the research and production of a Senior Project (AMST 297) or the writing of an Honors Thesis (AMST 298/299). The concentration will be developed in consultation with an adviser. Students should note that no more than 6 hours at the 100 level can count toward the interdisciplinary major and that often prerequisites exist for courses that may be used in the major. Independent study, research courses, and selected topics courses should have topics appropriate to the student's course of study. Student sseeking a second major may count a maximum of 6 hours of course work toward meeting requirements in both majors. Students seeking a minor may count a maximum of 3 hours of course work toward meeting requirements in both their major and minor.

Adam Jones

Adam holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of British Columbia. He is Associate Research Fellow for 2005-07 in the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, USA. He has published two books on the media and political transition and two edited volumes on genocide: Gendercide and Genocide (Vanderbilt University Press, 2004) and (Zed Books, 2004). His textbook, Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction Journal of Genocide Research Review of International Studies Caribbean Studies , and other publications. (See his website for details.) He is a member of the board of directors of the Gender Issues Education Foundation. Director
Carla Bergman

Carla is a social activist and student. Among her research interests are gender and conflict, democracy and education, the media and politics, international law, and community-based social ecology. In July 2000, she was appointed to the board of directors of the Gender Issues Education Foundation. She and her family are part of a democratic, academically non-coercive school in North Vancouver, BC. Webmaster

Sonya is in the process of completing her BA at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in the Bachelor of Technology and Management Degree. C enter f or G ender S tudies Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop We have an excellent line up of scholars from an array of disciplines for the 2005-2006 academic year. Lynette Jackson, Associate Professor in the departments of Gender and Women's Studies and African American Studies University of Illinois at Chicago, will present her work on AIDS and gendered violence in Zimbabwe on October 18. Lisa Baldez, Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Dartmouth, will visit the workshop on February 21 to discuss women's social movements for gender representation in Latin America. On March 7, Annette Huizenga, a Ph.D candidate in Biblical Studies and CGS graduate student fellow, will present her research on women and moral instruction in the Roman world. Other CGS fellows as well as a number of University of Chicago post-docs are also slated to present.
