We Can't Just Forget About Dead Afghan Civilians
By Robert Jensen and Rahul Mahajan
How many civilians have died in the United States' attack on Afghanistan? Military officials assert that high-tech weapons and precision bombing have kept that number low. Reports of civilian casualties whether coming from the Taliban or independent observers are routinely dismissed by the Pentagon as fabrications or exaggerations. U.S. journalists sometimes offer estimates of civilian deaths after a particular bombing raid, always cautioning that the reports can't be confirmed.
In the foreign press, however, the question is more prominent, and regular reports of heavy civilian casualties as a result of the U.S. bombing have fueled anti-American sentiment around the world.
Given these conflicting accounts, one might think a carefully documented study by an independent American researcher might be of great interest. One might expect U.S. reporters to be clamoring for a copy and requesting interviews with the study's author.
But in terms of mainstream news interest, it was a quiet week in Durham, NH, Marc Herold's hometown.

to the scant participation of women in the emerging political parties. Undertaking studies to determine the actual circumstances of rural women.
http://www.angola.org/politics/womens.htm
Women's Gains In The Struggle For Equality Angolan women participated, side by side with men, in the struggle for Independence, and are also playing a key role in the search for a lasting peace and consolidated democracy for the country. After Independence, the Constitution enshrined equality of the sexes before the law; with this legal instrument, women stepped up their battle for "a place in the sun." Little by little the myth according to which women had to stay at home to carry out their "natural mission" of raising children, bearing children, and serving as an instrument of pleasure. Albeit in small numbers, women began to be seen in some professions hitherto deemed "male," as they dared to enter careers such as pilot, breaking down barriers, taboos, and prejudices. Yet women's limited education has stood in the way, as we embark upon this "war" with the major handicap of not having a level of education needed to qualify for mid- or upper-level professional and technical courses, to meet qualification requirements for placement in certain positions. Statistics indicate that as of 1992 54% of the women in Luanda were illiterate, as compared to 31.4% of men. Only 2.5% had continued their studies beyond the 10th grade, as compared to 7% of men.

International Relations:
The major consists of core courses in international politics, economics, history, and women's studies. Electives are chosen from these disciplines, as well as modern languages and sociology. The senior year includes an integrative seminar and, if the student chooses, an internship or independent study. Students have interned at organizations involved in international relations such as the World Affairs Council, the United Nations Association, Amnesty International, the International Business Center, Bay Banks International, the offices of US senators, and Grassroots International. Although students are not required to take advanced courses in a foreign language, at least one course above the intermediate level is strongly recommended. Students are also strongly encouraged to take the following courses in the first or second year: ECON 100 and 101, HIST 128, and POLS 102. Faculty members of the International Relations Steering Committee are available for advising and supervising internships, independent studies, and honors theses.

In This Report Program Administration Curriculum and Faculty Development Programming Highlights Research, Publications, and Service ... Future Plans Women's Studies (WS) continues to build on its success as an interdisciplinary undergraduate program. It provides a framework and community for scholarly inquiry focusing on women, gender, and sexuality. Exploring gender cross-culturally, historically, and artistically, WS subjects strive to help MIT students better understand various constructions of knowledge and value and to realize the range of personal and intellectual discoveries made possible by using gender as a category of analysis. The program is also an important resource and support for faculty with an advanced knowledge of gender studies within particular disciplines but interested in learning more across disciplinary lines; moreover, it welcomes faculty who have an emerging interest in the field of women's studies. A highlight of this year was the May 2003 WS faculty retreat, a full day of discussions and breakout groups at MIT's Endicott House, during which 18 faculty members participated in conversations and planning sessions. WS faculty members planned a Conference on Feminism and Biology, brainstormed over 100 ideas for celebrating the 20th anniversary of WS, engaged in dialogue regarding the present state of WS at MIT, and made plans for programming, curriculum, our WS reading group, and our Intellectual Forum.

The treatise, set forth by Christine Stolba, a senior fellow at IWF, has already drawn fire from scholars who see Stolba as an "ultra-conservative" with an ax to grind against traditional feminists. "I think it's outrageous. It's irresponsible," said Magdalena Garcia-Pinto, president of the National Women's Studies Association, which says there are 750 respected women's studies programs in higher education. Stolba reviewed five of the most popular introductory textbooks and over 30 course syllabi from major colleges and universities across the country.
