International Feminist Journal of Politics: Call for Papers
Ideologies, Religions and Conflict: International Feminist Perspectives
Deadline: March 31, 2004
In the aftermath of September 11 2001 and the 2003 Gulf War the linkages between ideologies, religions and conflict are major points of focus in the theory and practice of international politics. At this historic moment the absence of women's voices has never been more apparent nor of greater concern, whether we are thinking about media commentary or reporting, government representation and debate, or academic engagement. International Feminist Journal of Politics proposes to address this 'absence' directly through a cluster of articles or theme issue exploring as many dimensions as possible through the lenses of feminist analysis and women's lives. We invite papers addressing the theme from as many geographical, societal and cultural perspectives as possible. We particularly encourage investigations that associate rather than oppose the tenets of ideologies (liberal, neoconservative, radical etc) with those of religions (Christian, Jewish, Muslim etc). Possible themes for attention include: Democratization and 'New World Orders'; Militarization and Weapons of Mass Destruction; Representations of the Other and Just War Theories; Militarization of Care and the Ethics of Intervention; Religion, Gender, and the Rise of Nationalism; Identities in Communities in Transition; Gender and Ideology in the 'War Against Terror'; Whose 'Axis of Evil' - Why and Where?; Gender Inequalities and the 'Liberation' of Iraq; New Orientalisms; Sexualities and Conflict. Please interpret the call as openly as possible. Articles combining theoretical and methodological discussion with substantive evidence are especially welcomed.

Women s liberation isn t really a political movement. Therefore the war,the draft and the university are political. Women s liberation is not.

The Politics of Housework Pat Mainardi of Redstockings
Though women do not complain of the power of husbands, each complains of her own husband, or of the husbands of her friends. It is the same in all other cases of servitude; at least in the commencement of the emancipatory movement. The serfs did not at first complain of the power of the lords, but only of their tyranny.
-John Stuart Mill On the Subjection of Women Liberated women-very different from Women's Liberation! The first signals all kinds of goodies, to warm the hearts (not to mention other parts) of the most radical men. The other signals-HOUSEWORK. The first brings sex without marriage, sex before marriage, cozy housekeeping arrangements ("I'm living with this chick") and the self-content of knowing that you're not the kind of man who wants a doormat instead of a woman. That will come later. After all, who wants that old commodity anymore, the Standard American Housewife, all husband, home and kids? The New Commodity; the Liber-ated Woman, has sex a lot and has a Career, prefer-ably something that can be fitted in with the house-hold chores-like dancing, pottery, or painting. On the other hand is Women's Liberation-and housework. What? You say this is all trivial? Won-derful! That's what I thought. It seemed perfectly reasonable. We both had careers, both had to work a couple of days a week to earn enough to live on, so why shouldn't we share the housework? So I sug-gested it to my mate and he agreed-most men are too hip to turn you down flat. You're right, he said. It's only fair. Then an interesting thing happened. I can only explain it by stating that we women have been brain-washed more than even we can imagine, Probably too many years of seeing television women in ec-stasy over their shiny waxed floors or breaking down over their dirty shirt collars. Men have no such con-ditioning. They recognize the essential fact of housework right from the very beginning. Which is that it stinks.

The aim of this course is to expose students to contemporary research by surveying subfields of political sciencepolitical theory, American politics, comparative politics, international politics, and public policy. Throughout the course, students will also reflect upon differences amongst women both across societies and within a single society. The course begins with a critical analysis of conventional explanations of women's political role in US politics, including the political participation, law, and public policy literature. We will examine the way in which feminist theory has challenged the narrow focus of these perspectives and engage in discussions on the central theoretical questions of feminist theory and how these can inform the study of women and politics.

“The ‘Arabian Nights’ in Historical Context: From Galland to Burton”

The Arabian Nights (known as Alf layla wa-layla in some Arabic versions) told by Sheherazade to King Shahiryar to prevent her murder presented a coherent, evocative way of imagining the Muslim East. The Arabian Nights revolves around a woman's power to forestall violence by weaving narrative tales. The collection of tales was widely serialized, adapted and abridged: by 1800 there were eighty English versions and the tales have also been re-imagined in children's books. In short, The Arabian Nights offers a fascinating window into Europe's understanding of the "East" over two centuries.

Roy challenges the idea that only experts can speak out on such urgent matters as nuclear war, the privatization of India’s power supply by Enron—now the center of a major national controversy over its corrupt business practices— and the construction of monumental dams in India, which will dislocate millions of people. “If [Roy] continues to upset the globalization applecart like a Tom Paine pamphleteer, she will either be greatly honored or thrown in jail,” wrote Pawl Hawken in Wired Magazine
When the US responded to the unconscionable attacks of September 11 by preparing to wage a war on Afghanistan, Roy wrote an internationally acclaimed essay, “The Algebra of Infinite Justice,” calling on the world not to use violence against innocent people in Afghanistan. After the war began, she wrote another powerful challenge to the war, “War is Peace.” The essays were printed around the world and were discussed on ABC's

WOMEN IN AMERICAN POLITICS
Throughout history, women have held power as queens, wives, and prime ministers in nations and empires. No woman, however, has ever been elected Chief Executive of the United States. Excluded from voting in national elections and most state and local elections until 1920, American women have always been dramatically under-represented in the United States government. The following items provide jumping-off points for discussions of the roles women have played in American politics: Montanan Jeanette Rankin, who in 1916 became the first woman elected to Congress, won her seat by promising to expand voting rights to women and ban liquor. Rankin also voted against going to war in World War I-an unpopular stance which caused her to lose her first re-election bid. In 1940 she won election to the house again, this time making pacifism her main campign issue, and cast the only vote against entering World War II, saying "As a woman I can't go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else." Rankin established a tradition of independent thinking among the slowly expanding number of women legislators. The quest for voting rights was part of a larger battle over what women's "proper" place in society should be. The question hinged upon whether women should be strictly confined to the domestic sphere, or if they should be allowed to venture outside the home to any siginificant degree. Victoria Hull, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt, and other suffrage leaders continually emphasized the connection between civil and economic rights.

Spring 1999
The views and activities of leaders of various women's movements, in the United States and internationally, are documented in microfilm collections available in Cornell's libraries. Collections also document women's engagement in the anti-slavery, peace, and labor movements. Additionally, they can provide windows into women's daily lives, friendships and relationships, and identities. Offering a wealth of material for scholarly investigation, these sets reproduce the official records of women's political organizations, contemporary media accounts of feminist activities, as well as the personal papers and diaries of individuals. For microform sets housed in Olin Library, the microform guides are shelved in the Reference Collection, arranged by their film/fiche guide number. The microfilm reels and microfiche are in the Microforms and Newspapers Section on the lower level of Olin Library.
