In 1936 the Huntington Library accepted a gift from Josephine P. Everett of about 500 titles concerning women and women's history. These books, and volumes presented later by the Susan B. Anthony Memorial Committee, formed the core of the collections in women's studies and provided the impetus toward collecting in this area. There are now over 2,000 reference volumes specifically on women, but other significant material may be found among the 320,000 volumes in the reference collection, which includes recent books in the field of women's studies.
The Library's rare printed materials number over 400,000 and document the role of women from 1455 to the present. For women's studies, the greatest strengths of the collections are in the areas of the western frontier and the fight for suffrage.
The rare printed materials include an outstanding collection of English Renaissance books and English literary and theatrical texts from the renaissance through the 19th century. In these fields the printed materials combine with extensive manuscript holdings to document the history of women who acted and wrote for the theater.

Women's Studies
Introduction
Women's Studies is the study of women and their role in society. Women's Studies courses began appearing in the mid 1960's as the academic counterpart to the women's movement. Also known as Gender Studies or Feminist Studies, Women's Studies programs cover many topics from the historical representation of women to the sociology of women today. The interdisciplinary nature of Women's Studies offers challenges to the beginning researcher. This guide will introduce some helpful resources to get you started.
Print-based resources
The field of Women's Studies covers the representation of women in diverse subjects like history, economics, politics, literature, health, philosophy, and religion. Class, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation differences among women further broaden possible research scopes. The variety and breadth of information on this topic can be overwhelming. A good place to begin looking for a general overview of women's studies would be a subject search for resources. Possible subject headings for research include: Women's studies—Handbooks, manuals, etc.; Women's studies—Information services; Women's studies—Library resources; or Women's studies—Research. Corresponding Library of Congress classification numbers are HQ 1180 to HQ 1190 or Dewey Decimal Classification number 305.
Here are two examples of titles that correspond to the subject headings listed above:

Introduction
The Methodist Archives and Research Centre (MARC) is the official archive repository of the British Methodist Church. It contains the largest collection of Methodist printed books and manuscripts in Europe, and is regarded as one of the world's most important collections of source material relating to evangelical studies. The books and records contained in the Archives document the activities of the Church on a national level from the early eighteenth century to the present. Local records, such as circuit minutes and accounts, are not held at the MARC but are kept locally. Similarly, records of Methodist overseas missions are not kept here, but are on deposit at the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. This guide, while it is not comprehensive, aims to introduce researchers to selected material deposited in the MARC which is relevant to the study of women and the Methodist Church. It is aimed specifically at postgraduate students but will also be of value to the more general user of the collections.
