POLICY PURPOSE
The purpose of the women's studies collection development policy is to provide guidelines for the acquisition of library materials in the field of women's studies.
COLLECTION PURPOSE
The Davidson Library women's studies collection's primary intent is to support the undergraduate and graduate level curriculum offerings of the UCSB Women's Studies Program, and women's studies' faculty research needs. Primary users are women's studies students, faculty, affiliated faculty and other members of the campus community seeking information or doing research related to women, feminism and gender. Women's studies consists of the academic study of women, feminism and gender across the disciplines; feminism as a multidimensional and multicultural international movement addressing a wide range of social economic and political issues; and analyzing systems of domination and subordination, as well as assumptions and biases about women. The UCSB Women's Studies Program offers an undergraduate major and minor, Master's degree, and a doctoral emphasis for graduate students in other departments. The Women's Studies Program is affiliated with the Departments of Anthropology; English; German, Slavic and Semitic Studies; History; History of Art and Architecture; Religious Studies; and Sociology

COLLECTION AREA Women's Studies GENERAL PURPOSE "Women's Studies uses interdisciplinary methodologies to analyze social and cultural institutions and to reevaluate the assumptions that have shaped human experience." * To adequately support the instructional and research needs of undergraduates and faculty, collecting must focus on those core materials primarily about or for women and materials addressing women's scholarship, feminist theory, and women's culture in all disciplines. The purpose of this collection development policy is, therefore, to define and describe our collecting patterns that support the study of women as a discrete subject as well as an overlapping topic of many other academic disciplines. Women's Studies as a discipline has evolved into a more clearly defined subject area. Collecting responsibilities will continue to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Previous to 1989, women's studies materials were purchased by all bibliographers. The first goal in developing the collection is to acquire materials that are uniquely related to the discipline. In recognition of the development of women's studies as a discrete discipline, Women's Studies was allocated a separate acquisitions budget in 1989. Collection development responsibilities for Women's Studies as a discipline in the Humanities and Social Sciences Collection (Baker Library) are now primarily the responsibility of the

This highly selective research guide covers the most useful, current and basic reference sources in Women's Studies and includes a basic list of journals. It is arranged by reference type and includes print, electronic and microform formats. This guide covers sources professors expect students to consult in researching a paper, gathering data to support a thesis and reviewing the literature on a topic. Since the purpose of this guide is to facilitate your research and is only part of the research process you are encouraged to contact the Reference Desk staff or me in person or email me with your question. Consult the glossary for definitions and explanations of library terms. While the intent of this guide is to get you started on your library research, A Step-by-Step Guide to Doing Research explains the research process. Additional information and guidance is available from the Subject Specialist for Women's Studies, Shari Grove (617-552-4481); grove@bc.edu

Collection Overview
The women's studies collection supports teaching and research needs for students and faculty in the Women's Studies Program . The primary focus of the collection is the study of women in the United States. The collection areas are the history of women in the United States, and current research and discourse carried out in the social sciences and women's studies The Women's Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary minor to undergraduates and places emphasis on the study of women's past and present position in society, analyzing the differences among women as a result of such factors as race, class, religion, and sexuality; the concept of gender relations is also an important emphasis. The range of issues that intersect with gender such as nationalism and post colonialism, health, labor, sexuality, race, family work and welfare are are additional aspects that are studied. The collection mirrors and supports these concerns by providing current teaching and research materials in many formats, including electronic access. Shari Taylor Grove
