  • Defining your topic
  • Selecting finding aids and indexes that will cover your topic
  • Searching finding aids and indexes
  • Retrieving the material
Defining your topic means looking at your assignment or interests, and focusing the topic to one that can be covered in the space and time you have. (Clue: I can't help you with this one! Talk to a colleague, fellow student, or your teacher!)
Finding Journal Articles: The primary English-language database for studies of literature is the Modern Language Association (MLA) Bibliography . However, there are numerous other databases of relevance to the fields of feminist science fiction, fantasy and utopia, including Wilson's Humanities Index Current Contents Arts and Humanities , and Women's Studies Index . Students in high school may want to check the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature - a very general database - first. These databases are all

The resources presented are organized into more manageable groupings to reduce search time. The order of the sources has been assembled with the idea that the early secondary classrooms will focus on the genre, elements, themes, and methods of literature. The broad categories of American and English Literature are presented next, followed by specific authors, topics, and works. However, if you are searching for a specific author or work, it may be cited in both the broad and a more specific category. While this has been organized to meet the content and focus of the secondary classroom, some middle school resources have been included because of their appropriateness to the secondary level literature class. If this is not the curricular organization you follow, you will need to look carefully at all of the resources and determine their appropriateness to your school’s literature planning guide. A to Z Help Subject Guides: Literature Author Guides This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance. I think other sources do a better job of that than I can. As with everything on the Web, many of these guides are ephemeral; they disappear from the Web almost as soon as they appear. If you encounter a bad connection in this guide, please let me know about it. Another point: this page is NOT a catalog of every single text available on the net. Return to the Literature Webliography page and search the various text archives or use a web search engine for a more complete listing of titles available on the net.
