Women, Gender and Health: A Review of the Recent Literature
en française

Executive Summary This paper presents a broad overview and synthesis of the recent research literature on the major psycho social influences on womens health. In the first section, the variability of health among women is reviewed, with a particular emphasis on diversities in health according to womens major social roles of partner, parent and worker. The context within which social roles are carried out, particularly the socio-economic context, is identified as a critical factor. While research examining womens health within the context of both social roles and material circumstances have produced quite complex findings, the research reviewed in this paper clearly suggests that to appropriately document and understand the variability of health among women, attention to the particular circumstances of womens lives is required. This point is further highlighted in sections describing the health issues of older women, Aboriginal women and immigrant and refugee women.

I joined the Department in 1995; before that I had been a lecturer in English at the University of Newcastle, and had taught widely in the Universities of London, Oxford, and Cambridge. I studied for my first degree at Christ's College, Cambridge and was awarded a BA (Hons) in English in 1986. My doctoral research was undertaken at Lincoln College, Oxford, and I completed my thesis on Laurence Sterne in 1990. My research and teaching are largely centred on eighteenth-century studies, but I have taught on a wide range of literary subjects, and maintain an interest in poetry and the novel in periods other than the 'long eighteenth century'. In 1999, I taught a semester at the University of Texas at Austen as part of an exchange scheme with that university. RESEARCH
My main research interests are in eighteenth-century studies. As well as working on particular authors such as Laurence Sterne, Henry Fielding, Charlotte Smith, and Elizabeth Carter, I am also engaged in several larger projects concerning women writers of the late eighteenth century, and relations between literature and science. I am currently working on

Honors Specialization: Major Specialization Minor Studying the Arts offers an intellectual, cultural, and personally enriching education, while preparing you for a rewarding career. By incorporating the study of great literature, visual arts, modern and ancient languages, linguistics and philosophy, an Arts degree allows you to investigate the core elements of our humanity. Explore the world of ideas (your own included), learn from the great thinkers and creators of the past and present, and expand your horizons. PROGRAM INFO Classical Studies
Classical Studies is the study of civilization through an exploration of ancient Greece and Rome. Since the Greek and Roman worlds are the foundation of modern society, Classical Studies is not simply the study of the past. Contemporary debates about justice, freedom, human rights and the position of women in society are all rooted in antiquity. By looking at the ancient world, we can address the question of who we are today.
