The Major
Women's studies explores who women were, who women are, who they might be, and how their lives and human interactions are affected by society's values, traditions, and institutions. SDSU has offered courses in women's studies since 1969 and has one of the strongest academic programs in the nation. Its origins are in the women's movement, and its vision includes a world free of sexual, racial, age, and class distinctions and other inequalities. Courses are designed to provide students with a coherent, integrated, and academically rigorous education. Content areas include concepts of self and family, theories of sex differences, history, cultural contributions, and the study of society's institutions. The emphasis is on increasing the awareness of objective conditions in women's lives throughout the world, and on developing critical analytical skills.

COLLECTION AREA Women's Studies GENERAL PURPOSE "Women's Studies uses interdisciplinary methodologies to analyze social and cultural institutions and to reevaluate the assumptions that have shaped human experience." * To adequately support the instructional and research needs of undergraduates and faculty, collecting must focus on those core materials primarily about or for women and materials addressing women's scholarship, feminist theory, and women's culture in all disciplines. The purpose of this collection development policy is, therefore, to define and describe our collecting patterns that support the study of women as a discrete subject as well as an overlapping topic of many other academic disciplines. Women's Studies as a discipline has evolved into a more clearly defined subject area. Collecting responsibilities will continue to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Previous to 1989, women's studies materials were purchased by all bibliographers. The first goal in developing the collection is to acquire materials that are uniquely related to the discipline. In recognition of the development of women's studies as a discrete discipline, Women's Studies was allocated a separate acquisitions budget in 1989. Collection development responsibilities for Women's Studies as a discipline in the Humanities and Social Sciences Collection (Baker Library) are now primarily the responsibility of the

As an academic unit at UW-Eau Claire, the women's studies program coordinates teaching, research and scholarship in the field of women's studies. This is a unique academic program that incorporates praxis: practice that is informed by theory and gendered analyses. Women's studies is a discipline in its own right, yet it operates most often in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary modes. Women's studies support and incorporate the following theoretical approaches to women's studies courses:
  • Taught with feminist pedagogical techniques and from a feminist theoretical perspective. Integrate theory with activism whenever possible. Advocate for gender justice both on campus and in the larger community.
Though other departments advocate for gender justice on campus, women's studies currently serves as an identifiable center for focused concern about issues of climate affecting women students, faculty and staff on campus. In addition, women's studies actively foster interaction with surrounding communities. WHY STUDY WOMEN'S STUDIES?

    Cross-Dressing
page: In literature, the gay male cross-dresser and the lesbian cross-dresser are often depicted quite differently. In representations of gay male cross-dressing, the drag queena gay man dressed in women's clothingis usually conflated with the male-to-female transsexual , a man who has either completed or wants to begin a "sex change" operation. The medical change from a man to a woman is seen as a "cure" for the "problem" of cross-dressing. With lesbian cross-dressing, however, dressing as a man is seen as a way of claiming power in a society that limits the social mobility of women. Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Attitudes The spectacle of cross-dressing began in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, when physicians and medical researchers like Richard von Krafft-Ebing coined termsincluding "transvestite"to classify people according to their sexuality. Naming not only established new categories, but, as Vern and Bonnie Bullough demonstrate in Cross Dressing, Sex, and Gender

Conduct Literature for Women I, 1500
6 Volume Set Series Editors: William St Clair and Irmgard Maassen The first set in this highly successful series draws upon the guidance literature for women produced during the beginning of the early modern period. Within the texts can be found advice on conduct in almost every aspect of female life. The Puritan ideals of virtue and piety underpin these writings, which describe feminine models of chastity, modesty and submission and emphasise the sense of religious and domestic duty which lay behind the broader social expectations of women.

    Conduct Literature for Women II
6 Volume Set Series Editors: William St Clair and Irmgard Maassen Spanning the years from c.1640 to 1710, a period of political, social and religious turmoil and reconstitution, Conduct Literature for Women II bridges the transition from a paradigm of virtuous conduct that was based on biblical precept and embedded in a universal hierarchy of reciprocal duties, to the sentimental view of femininity that came to dominate in the 18th century. Whereas Puritans attempted to uphold the pious virtues of the godly household, others turned to French models of polite manners that were becoming ever more central in defining subtle distinctions of gentility. Conduct texts began to rely for their legitimation more on reasoned argument, while the traditional demands for female obedience were transformed into less direct and more elegant instructions to internalise a well-bred self-restraint. Although old misogynist stereotypes survived and continued to inform popular pamphlet literature, and chastity, modesty and submission remained at the core of even the more worldly conduct advice, the underlying rationale was shifting from strictures on duty to appeals to a sense of honour and decorum.
