Women Studies Minor
Feminism provides the conceptual basis for the Women Studies program minor and Women Studies courses. Feminism is defined as the awareness that women as a group are systematically subordinated; the understanding that the oppression of women is linked to other forms of oppression; and the commitment to work actively to transform gender-based and related hierarchies. Feminism challenges patriarchal viewpoints, theories, categories, understandings, and interpretations, and their resulting power relationships. Feminism appreciates women's empowerment from various locations, and understands the mutual interdependence of women globally.
Minor Requirements The minor includes five core courses and additional electives for a total of 30 credits. Courses not listed as Women Studies courses may be substituted at the discretion of the Director. In order to count towards the minor, a course should focus primarily on women and/or women's experiences and conform to the Women's Studies Mission Statement. Students are expected to earn at least a C+ in courses counting toward the minor. Students may design a student/faculty designed major though the College of Arts and Sciences. Close advisement is recommended, as new courses may apply to this minor.

Program Scope
In consultation with an adviser, each student develops a major program including electives in women studies and in other departments. Majors must confer with the department chair in the early stages of their B.A. work for referral to an appropriate adviser. The Women Studies Minor is an 18-unit sequence well-adapted for combination with many existing majors. The nine units of requirements, six units of stipulated electives, and three units of free electives provide a grounding in feminist perspectives and theory. It also provides an opportunity to acquire background on feminist issues in a number of given disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields (e.g., history, psychology, sociology, literature, cultural studies, ethnic studies, and so on). Students interested in pursuing this minor should see the Women Studies department chair who will direct them to the appropriate adviser. The Master of Arts in Women Studies is interdisciplinary, enabling students to combine core and elective courses in women studies with electives in other departments and programs across the campus. The program, focusing on U.S. ethnicity and race issues and using a transnational perspective connecting U.S. concerns with those elsewhere, enables students to pursue advanced study of the history, status, and contributions of women in different cultures, and of the relationships among feminist theories, social/global structures, and the production of gender.

Postcolonial Literature of the Caribbean A Pathfinder

James Ward (1769-1859): Miranda and Caliban (the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Collection, Stratford-upon-Avon).
Introduction and Scope Postcolonial cultural and literary theories were formally conceived of in the academy during the last quarter century. These theories evolved out of the need for new and progressive conceptual frameworks by which to explore the cultural, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical trends which have indelibly marked regions of the world where colonization has played an influential role in the evolution of culture and history. Today, with issues of race, class, and gender at their core, postcolonial theories deconstruct prevailing ideals of history, and uncover the ways in which political, economic, and social systems have been constructed and transformed in societies where cultures have been forcibly meshed by imperialism and colonization. Postcolonial cultural and literary theories trace the origins of forms of cultural expression in postcolonial societies, elucidating the interconnectedness of the colonized and the colonizer as manifested in linguistic, semiotic, and aesthetic traditions. This pathfinder is intended primarily for undergraduate-level students at the University at Albany doing research in postcolonial studies, Caribbean Studies, and on postcolonial literature of the Caribbean. It is designed to enable students to locate research materials which outline and discuss postcolonial theory in general; to identify works by postcolonial-era Caribbean authors and critical works on them; and to uncover research materials which examine postcolonial theory in the context of Caribbean literature. However, in order to appropriately research the body of literature written by Caribbean authors from the postcolonial era, the history of slavery, colonization, and independence, social, and political movements in the Caribbean from the 1600s on must be considered. To this end, resources focusing on the general history of the Caribbean are included in order to provide an appropriate scope.

Greene, Richard. Mary Leapor: A Study in Eighteenth Century Womens Poetry . Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1993. Summary: Richard Greene's recounting of the life and times of English women writers in the eighteenth century is an unpleasant depiction of the way women's writings had gone unnoticed and unrecognized in that time. Greene tells most of this history through Mary Leapor (1722-1746), a poet of the mid-century (vii). She was the daughter of a gardener and herself a domestic servant. Most of her life was spent in Brackley, Northamptonshire (vii). Unfortunately, as was the case with many of the female writers of that time, her works were not published until after her death. Once they were published, her works were well received and she became a popular poet (vii).
Unlike most poets of that time, Leapor seldom addressed abstractions and wrote few odes. Instead, she wrote about her experiences as a working woman in a society which discriminated deeply on the basis of gender (vii). Since Leapor remained firmly outside the social elite of her time, she has very strong comparisons with some other female poets whose works are now
being accepted and revealed as eighteenth century English verse. Many of these poets describe poverty or the injustices suffered by women of that time. The exclusion from legitimate publication was one of these injustices. These are the very things that shaped Mary Leapors own poetry (vii). Her experiences as an outsider, a woman, gave way to many compelling poems.

Women's Studies
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY 2003 - Liaison Librarian Phyllis Rudin
Introduction
Women's Studies is fundamentally interdisciplinary, cutting across all geographic, time and disciplinary boundaries. All bibliographers are involved in selecting appropriate material for the collection. The Women's Studies bibliographer facilitates communication between interested faculty and students and the appropriate bibliographers. S/he also selects for Women's Studies from funds assigned annually for materials which are not specific to a discipline.
Collection Development in the 1990's and Current Collection Development
Assignment of Women's Studies as a collection area began with a commitment to oversight of the collection in the early 1990's. At the end of the decade, particularly as more money became available, a portion of the Interdisciplinary Fund was assigned to the Women's Studies bibliographer to manage. The bibliographer is responsible for general, theoretical or internationally comparative works, as well as interdisciplinary and interregional materials.
Academic Programmes and Liaison
The McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women was established in 1979. The Chair of the Women's Studies Advisory Committee is the primary liaison. Women's Studies is offered as a minor, major, honours or joint honours concentrations in the Faculty of Arts. The Centre maintains current course listings as well as a directory of women professors and feminist researchers.
