Consulting Services Working in high-wage, traditionally male occupations is an important strategy for increasing the economic self-sufficiency of women and the standard of living of their families. Through the New Workplace for Women Project, new strategies were developed for recruiting women, integrating them in the workplace and preventing sexual harassment. Project outcomes included:
  • The Tucson and Albuquerque Police Departments increased the number of female recruits to one-third and 25 percent, respectively. The Albuquerque Fire Department doubled the number of females in one year's time, from eight to 16, adding its first three minority female firefighters. Jones Intercable in Tucson increased the number of female cable installers from zero to three. The employers developed internal leadership teams of key stakeholders that assisted in integrating women into the workplace. Integration training and sexual harassment training were developed specific to each employer's industry, with a focus on the types of barriers and sexual harassment specific to women in male-dominated occupations.

Introduction
Domestic violence can spill over into the workplace, compromising the safety of both victims and co-workers. Its impact on the workplace may include lost productivity, health care costs, absenteeism, and employee turnover.
The Domestic Violence Model Workplace Policy Initiative
To address the impact of domestic violence on the New York State workforce, Governor Pataki released domestic violence model workplace policies for state agencies (July 2000) and private businesses (November 2000). The goal of these polices is to heighten awareness about domestic violence and to create a supportive workplace environment.
  • The State Initiative
Since its release, agencies have been implementing the model policy by tailoring it with specific policy language reflecting agency structure, function and resources. This process has included defining the role of management, human resources, EAP, health services, security and other agency resources in identifying, referring and supporting victims of domestic violence.
  • Private Sector Initiative
The private domestic violence model workplace policy was developed in conjunction with the Department of Labor pursuant to Executive Law 575 (9). Modeled after the state policy, the private policy is designed to encourage private employers to address the issue of domestic violence and the workplace.

Wednesday, September 21, 2005 John Roberts Nomination for Chief Justice: Bad News for Workers? As the nation reeled from the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, it was also newsworthy that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, William H. Rehnquist, passed away following a battle with thyroid cancer. John Roberts, having already been nominated to fill the seat of retiring Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, was quickly nominated by President Bush for consideration as the new Chief Justice. Roberts' nomination battle became that much more critical, as the individual selected as the next Chief Justice will have the ability to mold the Court for the next few decades. Since Roberts was initially nominated, more about his likely views on employment and civil rights issues has come to light, and should be of key concern to the U.S. Senate when deciding whether to confirm him.
Although Chief Justice Rehnquist had been battling cancer for some time, he had not retired from the Court at the end of this year's Term as had been widely expected. Instead, Justice O'Connor announced her retirement, effective upon the confirmation of her successor. John Roberts was nominated as Justice O'Connor's replacement, and his confirmation hearings were initially scheduled to begin this week, once Congress returned from its August recess. Many were calling for the hearings to be postponed, due to Katrina, when the nation learned of the Chief Justice's passing. The President then quickly moved to announce his intention to nominate Roberts, who formerly clerked for the Chief Justice, for the highest slot on the Court. (See

Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Amendment Bill 1999 Date Introduced: 22 September 1999 House: House of Representatives Portfolio: Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business Commencement: The formal parts of the Bill come into operation on Royal Assent, however the bulk of the effective changes (Schedules 1 and 3) commence on 1 January 2000.
Purpose
To change references to 'affirmative action' in the Affirmative Action (Equal Employment Opportunity for Women) Act 1986 to references to 'equal opportunity for women in the workplace' and to give employers greater latitude when devising their 'workplace programs' under the legislation, including changing the reporting period for employers from one year to two years.
Background
The Affirmative Action (Equal Employment Opportunity for Women) Act 1986 ('the Principal Act') requires private sector companies, community organisations, non-government schools, unions, group training companies and higher education institutions with 100 or more people to establish affirmative action programs. Affirmative action programs are meant to be designed to remove discriminatory employment barriers and take action to promote equal opportunity for women in the workplace. If an employer does not comply with the requirements of the Act they may be named in Parliament in the Affirmative Action Agency's report.

One of the roles of the Faculty's Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace (EOWW) Committee is to provide support and encouragement to female students to continue their education at honours and postgraduate levels. We endeavour to do this in a number of ways, including:
    • Encouraging women to do honours via our role in the organisation of the Faculty's honours information session (which is to ensure that women are well-represented as speakers in this forum); Organising information sessions for potential post-graduate students in which successful postgraduate women speak and there is an opportunity to interact with female faculty members; Encouraging interactions with appropriate female role models. For example by seeking applications from women of excellence as part of the Faculty's Visiting Scholars' Programme and suggesting female speakers for the Faculty's public lectures; Endeavouring to have women well-represented as lecturers at third and fourth-year levels;

Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Search within this book at Google Print American feminism has always been about more than the struggle for individual rights and equal treatment with men. There's also a vital and continuing tradition of women's reform that sought social as well as individual rights and argued for the dismantling of the masculine standard. In this much anticipated book, Dorothy Sue Cobble retrieves the forgotten feminism of the previous generations of working women, illuminating the ideas that inspired them and the reforms they secured from employers and the state. This socially and ethnically diverse movement for change emerged first from union halls and factory floors and spread to the "pink collar" domain of telephone operators, secretaries, and airline hostesses. From the 1930s to the 1980s, these women pursued answers to problems that are increasingly pressing today: how to balance work and family and how to address the growing economic inequalities that confront us. The Other Women's Movement traces their impact from the 1940s into the feminist movement of the present.

It was these women, they declared, that would make or break the election. They were the undecided, the swing voters. It was their vote that Bill Clinton had to win if he were to ensure his reelection. Only much later did it become apparent that these women had been mislabeled. They were not Soccer Moms at all. Indeed, as one observer wryly noted, "Waitress Moms" might be the better catch phrase. The majority of American women didn't drive new SUVs, live in the affluent outer suburbs, or spend their afternoons chauffeuring their kids around. Rather, they owned aging minivans, worked long hours for low pay, and jerry-rigged their child care through neighbors, relatives, and friends. Once it became evident that the real swing voters were actually blue- (and pink-) collar women
