E-Mail This Article Battling domestic abuse in the workplace By Melanie Nayer, Globe Correspondent, 7/24/05 ILLUSTRATION/ANTHONY SCHULTZ After learning that one of their workers was a victim of domestic abuse, Partners HealthCare System Inc. jumped into action. By adding extra security at its Boston headquarters, escorting the victim home and to and from court, and giving her additional paid personal days, management kept their employee safe at work. "We want to keep victims working. If someone is not working, it gives the perpetrator more access to the victim, and the victim has less financial support to help provide additional safety," said Donna Kausek, domestic violence specialist for Partners HealthCare. "Keeping workers working is beneficial to everyone." Domestic violence doesn't begin or end in the home. For the approximately 2 million women who are assaulted each year, domestic violence is a safety and health issue that carries over into the workplace. It is estimated that domestic violence costs American employers between $3 billion and $5 billion in lost productivity every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Employers lose another $100 million in lost wages, paid sick leave, and absenteeism linked to domestic violence cases.

Showtime's The L Word is Sex and the City about lesbians.
By Dennis Cass
Updated Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at 1:56 PM PT
Listen
to this story on NPR's Day to Day The new girls in the city I am not a lesbian, but while watching the first episode of The L Word thirtysomething Our entr©e into the world of these six friends is Jenny (Mia Kirshner), a fiction writer who moves to Los Angeles to be with her swim coach boyfriend, Tim. Tim happens to live next door to Tina and Bette, and Jenny quickly finds herself drawn to Marina, who owns the Planet, the West Hollywood cafe where our ensemble cast gathers when they're not embroiled in drama elsewhere. The sexual confusion Jenny experiences over the next six episodes is unnerving, erotic, and real, and because Jenny doesn't know anyone in L.A. except her boyfriend, there are no long talky scenes during which she can tiresomely wonder aloud about what she's doing with her life. Her attraction to Marina develops as an open secret, through intense scenes that are short on dialogue and long on meaningful looks. It's convincing stuff, and the viewer is left to wonder, as Jenny does, how far will it ultimately go? With the exception of lesbian references like "nipple confidence" and "hasbian," as well as some cable sex scenes

Women at Work: Too Much Emotion?
By Sara Templeton Early in 2004, I wrote an article about Dr. John Gray's idea that in the workplace men often see women expressing their emotions as a 'weakness'. I included a form so our readers could reply to Dr. Gray's idea, and I've also included some of the replies at the bottom of the page.

Women find place in humor's boys' club
By Burl Burlingame
Star-Bulletin
Women who make fun isn't the same thing as making fun of women. The latter is no joke, pal. But the former opens up a whole new world of humor. The University of Hawaii Summer Session this year has a focus on "The Comic in the Culture," and that includes a look at how women have tickled the national funnybone. Two of the visiting dignitaries are June Foray, a voice-over legend in the animation industry, and Trina Robbins, one of the most respected female cartoonists in America. Both are giving free weekend lectures. You might know Foray best as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel - she can't travel without "some guy walking up and talking to me in a Bullwinkle voice. I automatically answer in Rocky's voice!" she said from her Los Angeles home. She started in radio drama at age 15 in the '50s, graduating to Capitol comedy albums with the likes of Stan Freberg and Mel Blanc when radio was blindsided by TV. Luckily, the Disney studios discovered her vocal abilities and cast her as the cat in "Cinderella," her first animated role. Foray continued on-camera work - 13 weeks with Johnny Carson, a reoccurring role as "a little Mexican girl on 'Green Acres'" - but eventually decided she'd had it with make-up, wardrobe, hairstylists and the rest of the visual end of show biz. She wanted to do vocal work only. Did that decision pay off?

A tough place to be a woman with a cause Michael Theodoulou, Special to The Christian Science Monitor TEHRAN, IRAN - She is accused by some hard-line ayatollahs of trying single-handedly to undermine Iran's Islamic revolution. Petite and soft-spoken, she looks no match for her bearded detractors. But Shirin Ebadi is made of steel. "Any person who pursues human rights in Iran must live with fear from birth to death, but I have learned to overcome my fear," she says.

134. Alcotts And Orchard House
A virtual tour of Orchard House, Alcott's childhood home and the place where she is believed to have written Little women.
http://www.louisamayalcott.org/alcottorchard.html
Tour the rooms of Orchard House. Amos Bronson Alcott originally purchased two houses, both dating to the early 1700’s. He moved the smaller tenant house and joined it to the rear of the main structure, making many improvements to the main house, as he explains in his journal entries of 1857-58. At that time, the site encompassed 12 acres of apple orchards, probably appealing to Mr. Alcott who considered apples the most perfect food. It is not surprising that he should name his home "The Orchard House." Orchard House was the Alcott family's most permanent home (from 1858 to 1877). Louisa May Alcott wrote her classic work, Little Women , here in 1868 at a "shelf" desk built by her father especially for her. She also set Little Women in this home, causing guests to comment that "a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book!" There have been no major structural changes to the site since the Alcotts’ time of residence. Approximately 75% of the furnishings were owned by the Alcotts, and the rooms look very much as they did when the family lived there. A tour of Orchard House introduces visitors both to objects which were important to the family and to the family members themselves: Amos Bronson Alcott , a transcendental philosopher and teacher;

Workplace, Workforce and Working Families
Kathleen Christensen, Program Director
The goal of this program is to enhance scholarly, business, and public understanding of the interaction of family and workplace and of how the workplace can be restructured to provide more choice in work hours to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce, particularly working parents and older workers. Over the last nine years, the Foundation has funded six Centers on Working Families, one workplace Center, and many other research projects to examine issues faced by working families. These Centers and related projects have done outstanding academic work and produced 50 Ph.D.s, as well as 30 post-doctoral fellows. Furthermore, by providing the only source of sustained funding for researchers in sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, labor economics and industrial relations to conduct interdisciplinary research on issues faced by working families, the Sloan Foundation has played a vital role in developing this new field of work-family scholarship, a fuller description of which is available in our publication Familywork.
