Women's Journal Welcome to Brigid's Place Brigid's Place is a nonprofit organization incorporated by the State of Texas that provides a center for the spiritual growth and empowerment of women through programs, classes, and workshops held at Christ Church Cathedral. New programs at sites throughout Houston have been added recently in response to demand. For nine years, seekers—both from Christ Church Cathedral and other churches and places—have been taking part in Brigid's Place. Many are women who have left organized religion yet are hungry for spiritual growth. The women of Brigid's Place seek their authentic selves because, in this search for the gifts God has given them, they are able to respond to the needs of the world. Brigid's Place has been called "a sanctuary for the female soul." At Brigid's Place there are opportunities to pray and meditate alone or in community, find support and direction in small groups and conversation and within a mentorship program. An academic aspect emphasizes a broad range of topics such as women's voice, gender roles, women's spiritual history, theology and the scriptures, women and work, women and families, and the issues confronting women and men in our evolving society. Those at Brigid's Place believe that women with a spiritual hunger are looking for a place where asking questions about the meaning of life and the spiritual journey is encouraged. There are no membership requirements. Many programs are offered free of charge and some scholarships are available.

  • Introduction The Pre-Buddhist Position of Women Women and the Buddha's Path The Secular Position of Women ... Concluding Remarks
  • Introduction
The position of women has been a subject of considerable interest in recent decades. In all societies, particularly in the West, there has been a rethinking of the position accorded to women in all spheres of activity. This has resulted in a significant change in the role played by women in social, economic and even political life. This reappraisal has also touched on the question of the position accorded to women in the main religious traditions of the world. In Christian countries the issue of the ordination of women has become a highly controversial topic, and some Churches are facing the prospect of dissension, and even schism, on this question. It is therefore opportune to consider the place accorded to women in Buddhism. anicca ) still flourishes in Sri Lanka. There is perhaps a lesson here on the difficulty of perpetuating a Buddhist institution which has to be based on human endeavor of a high quality, than in looking after and venerating a non-human object, which is unfortunately all too common with many Buddhists.

    Japanese Women Now
Present Situation of the Employment of Women in Japan
    By KANATANI, Chieko
Representative, Women's Initiative for Advancement in Japan M-shaped employment pattern continues The ratio of women in the Japanese workforce is 39.7% (1999), which is not high according to international standards. Working women in Japan continue to form an M-shaped employment pattern based on age groups, and it is predicted that the situation where women leave the workplace because of marriage, childbirth, or child rearing will not improve by 2020. The fact that women cannot continue to work throughout their life is very different from the situation in advanced capitalist countries where working women reflect a trapezoidal employment pattern. As result, it is difficult to claim that the working environment has improved for Japanese women. Among the 23 OECD member countries Japan ranked 19th on the index for "degree of work ease for women," which is a drop from 16th place in 1990. Women's enthusiasm to continue working, however, has actually increased each year. For female university graduates, preference for "continuous employment" represents 57.1% and far exceeds "leave work due to marriage or childbirth" at 28.7% (source:
