Women in the Workplace Breakfast
Each year, the California National Organization for Women hosts a Women in the Workplace Breakfast in the Silicon Valley area to hear from women working in unions, small business, corporations, government and non-profits regarding integrating work, family and civic life. Our work has culminated with a report, available for download below. We hope to continue to expand the Taskforce to look into the difficulties facing working women today. The 2005 Women in the Workplace Breakfast was held on May 19th in the Silicon Valley area.
ISSUES:
Child Care is an issue that affects all working women, even though childcare needs vary based on income levels. The majority of middle to low income working women report a lack of affordable quality childcare. Child care is #1 issue for women in the Silicon Valley, low income women are most affected, and 20% of women in this area make less than $25,000 a year. In addition to childcare, the emerging issue is caring for aging parents and the need for elder care. Suggestions : Child care needs to be part of infrastructure of civic/business planning. We need to work on getting organizations and companies to understand the importance of childcare.

Women protest for workplace rights
From: AAP
July 30, 2005 MILITANT union activist Craig Johnston lent his support to a small but vocal group of protesters who took their campaign to improve working women's rights through central Melbourne today. About 60 people protested peacefully but noisily from Bourke Street Mall to the steps of Victoria's Parliament House, demanding free 24-hour childcare and employer-funded paid maternity leave. Campaign for Women's Reproductive Rights organiser Michelle Reeve said the measures were a basic need akin to providing elevators in a highrise office building. "Women should be provided with free childcare so they actually can work and aren't restricted to crappy casual jobs," she said. "Women are basically an expendable casualised workforce that the Government relies on for cheap labour." Ms Reeve said the Federal Government had made it clear they would use their senate majority to remove a whole range of basic workers rights.

Those concerns seem outdated today, when it's easy to find female doctors, lawyers, pop stars, even Presidential advisers. The progress toward equality in the workplace also shows up in government data on wages, which pegs women's average pay at 77% of men's compensation today.

Women in the Construction Workplace:
Providing Equitable Safety and Health Protection
Health and Safety of Women in Construction (HASWIC) workgroup,
Occupational Safety and Health Administration Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH), Department of Labor ABSTRACT As increasing numbers of women enter the construction trades, concerns about their health and safety are growing. In addition to the primary safety and health hazards faced by all construction workers, there are safety and health issues specific to female construction workers. The small percentage of females within the construction trades and the serious health and safety problems unique to female construction workers have a circular effect. Safety and health problems in construction create barriers to women entering and remaining in this field. In turn, the small numbers of women workers on construction worksites foster an environment in which these safety and health problems arise or continue. Sources of information for this report include a survey of tradeswomen conducted by CWIT and two research studies by NIOSH. The key findings and recommendations are

Most Workplace Violence on Women Hidden, Says Center Report
Judith Saidel It's dangerous out there in the workplace, especially for women with jobs in health care, education and social welfare, according to a new study by the University's Center for Women in Government. The report was issued in cooperation with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO). Government employees are several times more likely to be assaulted than private sector employees, according to the AFSCME-commissioned study, which is based on the newest data available from government sources. AFSCME represents 1.3 million government employees, 51 percent of whom are women, who work predominantly in human and protective services. The report also found that the annual rate of nonfatal assaults against women working in state government is 8.6 times higher than the rate for women in the private sector. Women working in local government are 5.5 times more likely to be assaulted than are private sector women. Judith Saidel, executive director of the Center, said most workplace violence is committed out of public view in institutions and office buildings.

ELEANOR HALL: Feminists in Australia are divided on a landmark document from the Catholic Church in Rome, which supports the role of women in both work and family.
While blaming hardline feminism for undermining family values, the Vatican document is openly encouraging of women's role in the workplace, while also emphasising the importance of motherhood.
Australia's Sex Discrimination Commissioner has hailed it as an important document that could even help reverse the declining birthrate in Australia.

Week beginning Sunday, 18 May 1997 Back to BT Labour Guides main page T HIS week John Botha, Human Resources Manager of Quest Personnel, examines the expectations of women in the workplace Rael Solomon and The Labour Consultancy , deal with problems relating to the transfer of contracts of employment . Rael Solomon comments on procedures and the LRA . Don't forget to read our letters page which contains practical advice in response to browsers' questions. WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE The Constitutional Bill of Rights, the Labour Relations Act (1995), the Proposed Basic Conditions of Employment Bill and pending legislation all have a fundamental common purpose: TO ENSURE THAT THE RIGHTS AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS OF HISTORICALLY DISADVANTAGED GROUPS ARE GIVEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT. For the purposes of this discussion we focus on the woman in the workplace from two dimensions:
  • gender discrimination; and
  • temporary female employees It is common cause that for all classes of employee other than casual employees, the provisions pertaining to fair discrimination, unfair dismissal and unfair labour practices apply. Hence, just giving statutory notification to the secretary (or domestic) may be legal but not fair. The Labour Court or an Arbitrator may be requested to adjudicate fairness of termination and practice. These proposals are aimed at introducing some flexibility in the area of compulsory maternity leave. But at the same time they also clearly create job security for pregnant employees. Read together with the relevant provisions of the LRA, ESA will ensure that employers may not dismiss women employees simply for the reasons of pregnancy and child birth.

A: Rules regarding Muslim women's (and men's) attire are derived from
the Quran, Islam's revealed text, and the traditions (hadith) of the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In the Quran, God states: "Say to
