162. Bob Dole On Women
Bob Dole's view of the role of the First Lady, and other women.

Bob Dole on Women
Bob Dole's view of the Role of the First Lady
Like Bill Clinton, Bob Dole has a powerful intelligent wife who has a long list of accomplishments and a distinguished career of her own. In this respect, Elizebeth Dole and Hillary Clinton are much alike. However, the Republicans have strongly criticized Hillary over issues involving her role as first lady and being the wife of the president. So the Bob Dole family is faced with the issue of what to do about Libby Dole. To be consistent with Republican expectations and to differentiate himself from his opponent, Bob Dole is forced to treat his wife differently than Bill Clinton. Clinton ran admitting his wife was smarter than he was. He said that she was a valuable asset to the country and would participate in government. His slogan was "Buy one, get one free." Bob Dole, on the other hand, has to show that he can "put the little woman in her place." So his wife has to play the subservient house wife who has no life of her own and is totally dedicated to her husband's opinion. While this role was fine for Barbera Bush, who was genuinely that way, Libby Dole is faking it. So what does it say about Bob Dole as a man when he has to attack his opponents wife to make himself look good? What does it say about Dole to force his wife to fake a role that just isn't her so as to satisfy the expectations of his right wing supporters. And it doesn't say a lot about Libby Dole's integrity do go along with this fraud. It raised the question; How long is she going to fake being stupid?

In the 1920s and 1930s she worked for the women's International League, an organisation committed to world peace and remained active in politics until 1950 when she had a serious accident that left her immobilized. Emmeline Pethick , the daughter of a businessman in Bristol , was born in 1867. The second of thirteen children, she was sent away to boarding school at the age of eight. A rebellious child, she was constantly in trouble with her teachers. After being transferred to a Quaker school she was accused of being "a corrupting influence on other children". In 1891 Emmel ine became a voluntary social worker at the West London Methodist Mission . Emmeline helped organise a club for young working-class girls. Emmeline was shocked by the poverty she encountered and it was during this time she was converted to socialism. Emmeline believed it was important to give these girls a practical example of socialism in action. In 1895 Emmeline formed the Esperance Club. This involved helping a group of young women establish a co-operative dressmaking business. In 1899 Emmeline met the wealthy lawyer

    Getting more women into politics
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations] KABUL, 2 Mar 2005 (IRIN) - The United Nations and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) called on Afghan political parties on Wednesday to promote and support female candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The first parliamentary elections in Afghanistan under newly elected President Hamid Karzai were scheduled to be held in May but were postponed last week for security and logistical reasons. The election has already been postponed once since the autumn due to a lack of administrative preparedness and slow progress on a census of the country's population. Observers and women’s rights activists are concerned that low public awareness of the parliamentary election, the influence of warlords in rural areas and the strongly patriarchal traditional culture in the country will mean women will be poorly represented in the new parliament. Such a situation would be technically illegal. The new Afghan constitution states that at least 68 - two from each province - of the 249-member lower house must be women.

Liberal Democrat web development by Prater Raines Partners Other party sites The Gender Balance Task Force has been set up by the Liberal Democrats to maximise the participation of women throughout the Liberal Democrats and politics as a whole. As a party, we have women throughout the Party in positions of power and influence, from leading local parties to councillors, council group leaders, MPs MEPs and national assembly members. But we recognise that there is still more to be done. The Houses of Parliament remain a distinctly 'woman unfriendly' area and many women are put off putting themselves forward to it, but without more women - and especially more Liberal Democrats - being elected, we despair of seeing positive change.

Over the next four weeks we will be adding more resources to the private area to ensure that this website becomes an effective training and resource centre for those women wishing to become more active within the Liberal Democrats.

Women and politics Do they mix? by Susan C. Fischer It was the 1992 presidential election and the buzz circling in the United States political arena was the "woman" vote. Polls revealed that a large number of women voted for Bill Clinton not because of his political views, but because of his charming manner and propensity to hug. Women like huggers. In the 1996 election the woman factor, according to polling data, again played a role with the now termed "soccer moms" voting for the smiling and young Bill Clinton vs. the media-portrayed angry and old Republican candidate, Bob Dole. Now in the year 2000 we have two major candidates vying for this "soccer mom" vote: Al Gore and George W. Bush. Al Gore has reportedly taken great pains to attract this voting bloc, soliciting expert advice on what type of clothes to wear, how to speak, and how to become the "alpha-male." This is a type of male that appeals to women. This male type can be recognized in the ever-popular Julia Roberts romantic movie. He is masculine and handsome, yet gentle and a ready listener to the female star. He is there, eager to take away the difficulties of life; his love is passionate and all-consuming. A woman can throw herself with full abandon into his arms, where complete security and eternal joy is assured her. These movies are called "chick movies," and they bore boyfriends and husbands. Al Gore scored a major coup in his quest to be viewed as the alpha male with the now famous "kiss" at the Democratic convention last month. When Gore leapt onto the stage (vital: leaping shows vigor) after being introduced by his wife, Tipper, he planted a hugereally hugekiss, directly on her mouth, before taking the microphone. This was not the usual politician's polite kiss-your-wife-on-the-cheek gesture. It was an unprecedented phenomenon. "The kiss" has now been replayed on news programs everywhere, and Oprah, when interviewing Gore in September, played it twice for the woman-dominated audience. And do not think this means nothing. Polling data are showing that a large number of women are now voting for Gore because of "the kiss."

Stereotypes, images, slogans, straw men, agendas, platforms ... O, how odious all these phenomena are, and yet how central to the political scene! The wise anywhere care for nuance in politics - but the wiser often refuse to hope for the same. A prime expectation from politics is that it would live up to no expectations. The way to approach it, then - especially its electoral variety - is to understand the meaning of representation, with all its implications. An abstract concept, representation is a matter of sublimated realities, a measurement between the material, the real and its purportedly simplified, simplistic imagery. Rest as it does on representation, politics is thus a stage - whose actors are all ultimately their own ventriloquists.
