128. Women In Korean Politics
How do the experiences of women in Korean politics compare with those of their women in Korean politics has been reviewed in Pacific Affairs (199495);
http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~soh/abstract.htm
Women in Korean Politics
Second Edition Chunghee Sarah Soh Boulder: Westview Press (1993) Publisher's announcement of the second edition Chunghee Sarah Soh here contributes a unique perspective on women in politics by examining the experiences of Korean women in their national legislature. The major questions she raises are: Who are the women? How did they attain their political positions? What motivated their participation in male-dominated politics? What insights would an analysis of their personal and professional experiences provide to our understanding of complex processes of social change? How do the experiences of women in Korean politics compare with those of their counterparts in different nation-states? By analyzing the life histories of twenty-nine women legislators in the South Korean National Assembly, Professor Soh illuminates many aspects of modern Korean society, as well as the dynamics of changing male-female relations and gender-role conceptions in a modernizing society. The author adds an important new dimension to the study of women in politics by situating her findings in the broader sociohistorical context of a "patriarchal democracy." Soh also provides cross-cultural comparative perspectives on such topics as family backgrounds, gender-role socialization, patterns of recruitment, and the impact of the electorial system on the representation of women in national politics. In this new edition, the introductory and concluding chapters have been rewritten, and relevant parts in the text have been updated to reflect the fast pace of social change in South Korea.

Cardiff, 20–25 November 2005 (event 0571) Ten years on from the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, the target of 30% for women’s political participation has still not been achieved. Only 15.7% of the world’s parliamentarians are women. Why are there still so few women in parliaments? Are quotas the only way to guarantee equal representation for women? How effective can women be when they are still in the minority in parliaments? How can women be supported and encouraged when they are elected? This seminar will bring together politicians, activists and academics to look at mainstreaming gender into political life, compare international experiences of positive action measures and discuss how women politicians can work effectively to deliver policy and practice which addresses the needs of women as well as men. The Welsh Assembly has been at the forefront of change in the male dominated arena of politics and now has not only equal numbers of men and women in the Assembly but a cabinet comprising more women than men. Representatives of  the All-Party Women and Democracy Group in the National Assembly of Wales will be in attendance at sessions throughout the week and will be bringing their own reflections and experiences of the process and the changes they feel they are making as women to the world of politics.

140. Working Race: Speech, Silence And Women's Work As Racial Politics In Denise Chá
Fulltext conference paper by Lisa Trevi±o Roy-Davis, entitled Working Race Speech, Silence and women's Work as Racial politics in Denise Ch¡vez and Ana Castillo.
http://www.womenwriters.net/editorials/trevinoroydavis.htm
January 2000 This paper was originally presented at:
The Modern Language Association Meeting
December 29, 1999
Chicago, IL Working Race: Speech, Silence and Women's Work as Racial Aside from the startling realiszation that stereotypical racialized thinking is alive and well in my newly extended familyI keep returning to this holiday moment as a window into the problem of how racism and sexism are perpetuated in the workplace and on the job. By now, the assumption that we live in a racist society is nearly implicit in academic thought, even taken for granted. We've gotten to this point by a definite increase in racial awarenessmore speech and more rhetoric on the race issue. But we are also subjected to constant reminders from the press about how far we have come. Even mainline publications such as this week's issue of Newsweek declare the war on racism to be largely won. Ellis Cose, writing for the magazine declares: The color line is fraying all around us. The American future certainly will not be circumscribed by one long line with whites on one side and the "darker" races on the other; there will be many lines, and many camps, and few will be totally segregated. Disparities will remain. But with the rudest reminders of racism washed away, it will be a lot easier to tell ourselves that we have finally overcome. (30)
