This Sunday we have elections in Austria for the office of federal president. The two candidates are Heinz Fischer from the Social-Democratic p art y and Benita Ferrero-Waldner from the conservative Austrian People's P art y (OeVP). Ferrero-Waldner is probably most familiar from photos of national representatives, where she is invariably found, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, batting her heavily mascaraed eyelashes at the camera, trying to smile coquettely without smearing her lipstick ... Isn't that a terrible thing for a feminist to write about an other woman? Maybe it is the case that any claim can be made in an election campaign, but it infuriates me the way Ferrero-Waldner is trying to play the "we need more women in politics " card. Why would anyone vote for her, just because she is a woman? Do we really need more women in

The unspoken/unwritten implication is : "But not this woman." This is not a new phenomenon. On the other side of the political spectrum, for 10 years the very media which are responsible for covering national politics pronounced the NDP "irrelevant" and "marginalized." It happened to be the10 years when Audrey McLaughlin and Alexa McDonough were successive leaders of the party. I came to believe that if Audrey and Alexa had spoken with the tongues of angels and had performed acts of charity and social conscience worthy of Mother Teresa and there were times when they did both there would have been and there was a loud ho-hum from the Parliamentary press gallery. But the NDP has a new leader now and when Jack Layton sneezes, the national media say, "God bless you." Suddenly, the NDP is "back in the game," "renewed," "revitalized."

Women and the politics of fundamentalism in Iran
Journal no.5 1994. pp15-20. Haleh Afshar examines what Islamic fundamentalism means to women who choose to adopt it and how, if at all it could be used as a means for political struggles. The intention is to move away from the usual condemnatory approach to Islamic fundamentalism and consider it in the light of the views and activities of its adherents. WHAT IS FUNDAMENTALISM?
Fundamentalism has for long been associated with greater or lesser degrees of oppression of women. Given the rise of fundamentalism and the decision of many women to consciously reject feminisms of various kind and adopt the creed makes it important for some of us to consider what it is and why so many have chosen it. It may be worth while to stand back and consider the reasons that many Muslim women have offered for adopting Islamic fundamentalism and "returning to the source" both in the UK and elsewhere. Part of the problem of understanding fundamentalism has been in terms of definitions and terminology. Muslims themselves do not use the terms fundamentalist at all; the twentieth century Islamists argue that they are revivalists, and are returning to sources of Islam to regain a purified vision, long since lost in the mire of worldly governments. Shiias, who are a minority school of Islam, but form 98 per cent of the Iranian population, have for long seen themselves as the guardians of the poor, the dispossessed and those trampled on by unjust governments. Kim Goforth Welcomes You to her Feminist Law Website "Your Silence Will Not Protect You." Audre Lorde" The purpose of this page is to provide links between different groups of women and men who are interested in women's issues regarding social justice, human rights and the law. I am graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and have been working on issues of violence against women and children, most recently at a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Working within the justice system trying to advocate for abused women and children has been a very frustrating and yet enriching process. Some days I hate my chosen road but most of the time I can walk into my front door with the feeling that I have actually made a difference in someone's life. I know a lot of people who consider law school only to reject the idea because they are women or are progressive and I can't say that it will be a picnic...but I can say that it's certainly worth it to be able to make a real difference.
