Republican and Imperial Roman Women in Politics
March 29, 2001 The change of the Roman state from being Republic to Empire, was not a special concern only to the men of Rome. It also affected women who were at least somewhat involved in Roman political life. They were more vulnerable than during the republican times and were affected by the web of the court intrigues. The women of the imperial family were used as marriage alliance tools, were expected to be an example for all the Roman state to follow and often became victims of the imperial legislation. Alongside with all these changes, certain ideals stayed the same through both the Republic and the Empire. The wife of the emperor seemed to be the only woman in a perfectly good position. Under the emperor, women became extremely vulnerable and unprotected. At the time of the Republic, the wives of Roman Senators were honored and well regarded as the power over the state belonged to their husbands. A good example of this is Cornelia, the mother of the brothers Gracchi, who refused to marry the King of Egypt explaining that this matrimony would be a step down for a widow of a Roman Senator. This cannot be regarded just as an arrogant statement, for nobody, even the Pharaoh, objected to it. This illustrates very well how influential the Roman Senators were and how significant their wives felt while there was no sole rule in Rome.

December 02, 2004 Article research by Allison Bloch, Newsdesk.org Intern Simply having the right to vote does not guarantee civic enfranchisement or equal status. A short survey of women's issues at home and abroad finds wage disparities, lack of political involvement, and, of course, conflict over abortion rights and wrongs. You don't get much more Democratic than New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachussets. With that political inclination, you'd expect progressive attitudes towards women, and ample political motivation in the "second sex." Why, then, was New Jersey was recently called out as having one of the nation's lowest rates of political participation by women? The numbers are actually remarkable 48th in the nation for women in elected office, 45th for women who vote and 38th for women who register to vote. Minorities fared little better. Pennsylvania, ranked at 47th in the nation for women in politics, did little to improve the regional rep. And while Massachussets may offer women some of the highest wages in the U.S., black and hispanic women earned about $10,000 less than their caucasian counterparts. The state ranked 28th for women in politics.

NEW PAGE! Updated 17 February 2005 Women make up 51% of the Irish population yet hold only 13% of seats in the Dáil (parliament). No political party, and few decision-making bodies have an equal level of women and men represented. We're working hard to change this - follow the links below for more information. What's the current situation?
Women make up 51% of the Irish population yet very few decision-making bodies have an equal representation of women and men.
Currently women hold only 13% of seats in the Dáil (Irish parliament). This percentage is on par with the percentage of women in the parliament of Sub-Saharan Africa. When the NWCI looked at other decision-making bodies in Ireland we found that women are under-represented on the vast majority of them.
We created this webpage to monitor and track the situation, and to promote the participation of women in decision-making, as well as to raise awareness of the issue.

Women Candidates and MPs The first federal election in which women were able to vote and run as candidates was 1921. In that election, four women ran for office and Agnes Campbell MacPhail (1890-1954) made history as the first woman elected to the Canadian House of Commons. Between 1921 and 1997, 2330 women candidates stood in the general elections and won on 233 occasions (I do not have the figures for by-elections); note: a number of individuals ran several times. You can see the growth in numbers of women candidates in the 1921-2000 elections . Although the numbers of women candidates dropped between 1993 and 1997, from 476 to 408, more women were elected to office in 1997 - 62 compared to 58. A

From Africa Recovery, Vol.18 #1 (April 2004), page 4 Women break into African politics Quota systems allow more women to gain elected office By Gumisai Mutume Women in Rwanda now top the world rankings of women in national parliaments, with 49 per cent of representation compared to a world average of 15.1 per cent. This year the country commemorates the genocide of 1994, when Rwandan women suffered death, humiliation, persecution and sexual abuse during a 100-day massacre that left more than 800,000 people dead. As the country undergoes a period of reconstruction, women are taking an active role. They not only head about a third of all households, but have also taken up many jobs that were formerly the preserve of men, as in construction and mechanics. Three of the 39 women elected to Rwanda's legislature in September 2003. From left: Constance Rwaka, Solange Tuyisenge and Athanasie Gahondogo.
However, their most notable achievement has been in politics. Thanks to a new constitution, 24 out of 80 seats in the lower house of parliament are reserved for women. During the country's September 2003 general election, the first after the genocide, an additional 15 women were voted into non-reserved seats, bringing 39 into the lower house. In the upper house, 6 out of 20 seats are reserved for women. To attain this, Rwandan women lobbied heavily, helped to draft the new constitution and developed voting guidelines that guaranteed seats for women candidates. They were also able to push for the creation of a government ministry of women's affairs to promote policies in favour of women's interests.
