WIC Main Page Biographies Words of Wisdom Newsletter ... Contributions WOMEN'S RIGHTS . Throughout most of history women generally have had fewer legal rights and career opportunities than men. Wifehood and motherhood were regarded as women's most significant professions. In the 20th century, however, women in most nations won the right to vote and increased their educational and job opportunities. Perhaps most important, they fought for and to a large degree accomplished a reevaluation of traditional views of their role in society.
Early Attitudes Toward Women
Since early times women have been uniquely viewed as a creative source of human life. Historically, however, they have been considered not only intellectually inferior to men but also a major source of temptation and evil. In Greek mythology, for example, it was a woman, Pandora, who opened the forbidden box and brought plagues and unhappiness to mankind. Early Roman law described women as children, forever inferior to men. Early Christian theology perpetuated these views. St. Jerome, a 4th-century Latin father of the Christian church, said: "Woman is the gate of the devil, the path of wickedness, the sting of the serpent, in a word a perilous object." Thomas Aquinas, the 13th-century Christian theologian, said that woman was "created to be man's helpmeet, but her unique role is in conception . . . since for other purposes men would be better assisted by other men."

Objectives and Activities
The Research Centre on Women and Politics is dedicated to promoting the advancement of theoretical and applied knowledge in this field of research. The Centre pursues three areas of interest: women and political thought, women who are elected, and women and public policy. Women and Political Thought Research in this area is mostly theoretical in nature and examines the past, present, and future relationship between women and political thought and theory. For instance, it looks at the great revolutions that characterized modernity and the role women played in them; it also examines the place of women in contemporary political thought, in nationalism around the world, as well as in post-modernism and the challenges it represents for the second wave of feminist thought. Elected Women in Politics Work in this area converges on practical as well as theoretical knowledge. It focuses principally on female political representation, on the sociology of elections, and on political behaviours. In particular, it examines the impediments to the election of women, elected women and their identity, their roles and functions in power, and the strategies required to increase the number of women in politics.

President Bush Proclaims Women's History Month, 2005 During Women's History Month, we celebrate the achievements of our Nation's women. For generations, American women have helped build our great Nation through their leadership as writers, teachers, artists, politicians, doctors, and scientists, and in other professions. As mothers, daughters, and sisters, women have supported and strengthened American families and communities. Women are at the forefront of entrepreneurship in America, creating millions of new jobs and helping to build our Nation's economic prosperity. Women in Politics
Bangladesh Table of Contents Prior to the 1988 parliamentary elections, the provision for reserved seats for women had been allowed to lapse. The result was that women were left practically without representation at the national level, although there were other forums for political involvement at the local level. In mid-1988 three women sat on union and subdistrict councils. Municipal councils also included women, but the law precluded women from exceeding 10 percent of council membership. Some women's groups, such as the Jatiyo Mohila Sangstha (National Organization for Women), have held major conferences to discuss women's problems and mobilization strategies. Although these women's organizations were the province of middle-class women, they served as training grounds, as did local councils, for a new generation of politically active women. International Conference on Women and Politics in Asia
Halmstad, Sweden, 6-7 June, 2003 This international conference will focus on women and politics in Asia and will address politics as a gendered domain. Women compose half of the citizens in the Asian countries. Opportunities for women to be represented in political bodies and to influence political matters are an important parameter of democracy and thus an integral aspect of political development and the democratization process in Asia. Increasing the active participation of women in politics and the representation of women in positions of power remains a crucial step towards obtaining a gender balance in politics. At the same time it is important to examine the "gender" of politics and implications of gender in the political life in Asian countries. The aim of the conference is to study different dimensions of Asian women in politics. The conference is multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary in approach and invites contributions from social sciences and humanities from all parts of the world.

Women in politics - where are they?
Lucille Seymour Berna Thompson Cummins Beulah McField Sandra Catron Edna Moyle Alex Johnson Julianna O’Connor Connolly Mary J Lawrence Maxine McCoy Moore Friday, March 25, 2005 Between 1992 and1996 Heather Bodden, Edna Moyle and Berna Thompson Cummins were the only three women that were members of the highest team of leaders in the Cayman Islands – the Legislative Assembly. In the four years following, there was no increase in the number and again, only three women, Heather Bodden, Julianna O’Connor Connolly and Edna Moyle participated in governance at that level. However, between 2000 and 2005 only Julianna O’Connor Connolly and Edna Moyle found a place in the Legislative Assembly. Coupled with the decline in the number of women leaders, there has also been a decrease in the number of women offering themselves for political candidacy. This year, the upcoming general elections in May 2005 will see nine women standing for election compared to the year 2000 when the number of women offering themselves for leadership was over forty per cent higher. Of the seven women on this year’s slate of candidates, who are not already in the Legislative Assembly, four have run for office before and are known in some way in the political arena. We therefore have only three women giving firm evidence of being newly attracted to politics and leadership at this level.
