Loretta Sanchez grew more and more incensed as she read aloud from a letter sent to her by a woman serving in the U.S. Army. The soldier wrote that her birth-control failed her and she became pregnant. To preserve her military career, she decided to have an abortion. But she was stationed in Germany. And under a law passed by Congress in 1996 and reaffirmed recently, abortions cannot be performed at military hospitals, even at the expense of the patient. So, the soldier wrote, she had to take vacation time, fly back to the United States and have an abortion there. She was out $1,100, and returned to work angry at the country she was fighting to protect. "I can only remember thinking at the time how unfair it was that I had to resort to these drastic measures," the soldier wrote in September 2001. "Had I been in the states, it would have been no issue. I remember being resentful of my fellow male comrades, who are able to have vasectomies at the cost of the military in Germany. And I had to use my leave time and own funds to fly back to the U.S. for what is also a reproductive choice."

In 1865 William Booth , a Methodist preacher, founded the Christian Mission in London's East End to help feed and house the poor. The mission was reorganized in 1878 along military lines, with the preachers known as officers and Booth as the general. After this the group became known as the Salvation Army.
Booth sought to bring into his worship services an informal atmosphere that would encourage new converts. Joyous singing, instrumental music, clapping of hands and an invitation to repent characterized Salvation Army meetings.
General Booth was deeply influenced by his wife Catherine Booth , who believed that women were equal to men and it was only inadequate education and social custom that made them men's intellectual inferiors. She was an inspiring speaker and helped to promote the idea of women preachers. The Salvation Army gave women equal responsibility with men for preaching and welfare work and on one occasion William Booth remarked that: "My best men are women!"

Selina Cooper , the daughter of Charles Coombe and Jane Coombe, was born in Callington, Cornwall in 1864. Selina's father was a navvy and was away working on a construction job when he died of typhoid fever. Jane, her two youngest children and her seventy-four year old mother were all left destitute by Charles Cooper's death. There was little work in Cornwall so Jane decided to follow the example of two eldest sons, Richard and Charles, and seek work in the textile mills of northern England. Jane Coombe, and her two youngest children, Selina and Alfred, settled in Barnoldswick in 1876. Selina and Alfred soon found work in the local textile mill. Selina, who was now twelve years old, spent half the day in the factory and the other half at school. She was employed as a 'creeler' and it was her responsibility to make sure there was a constant supply of fresh bobbins for the cotton emerging from the card frames. When Selina reached the age of thirteen she was able to leave school and work full-time in the Barnoldswick Mill. Selina received eight shillings for a fifty-six hour week, and this enabled the family to move out of temporary accommodation and rent a small house close to the mill.

Despite determined efforts of the victims and human rights organizations to secure redress for these grave crimes, the unyielding wall of military jurisdiction has put these cases beyond the reach of justice," said Amnesty International as it launched a new report on the rape of indigenous women in the state of Guerrero by members of the military. Amnesty International believes that these cases of rape amount to torture under international law. Such serious crimes should automatically ensure investigations of the highest standard. By focusing on the cases of indigenous women victims of rape between 1997 and 2002, the report highlights the ongoing struggle of victims to overcome intimidation, discrimination, incompetence and obstruction in their search for justice.

VIDEO American military women are following Saudi custom of head-to-toe robes when off-base. CNN's Wolf Blitzer reports (December 19)
    PLAY VIDEO
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) It's a little sliver of America in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula. For the American military women serving here at the U.S. section of the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, life is no different than it is back home. I asked Brig. Gen. Dale Waters of the U.S. Air Force about the roles and experiences of the women who serve here. "We have women in the wing. They do their jobs just like the men. We haven't had any problems." But that's only when they are on base. When they're off base, all bets are off. That's because of the strict Saudi religious traditions that guide the way women must dress and behave in public. Dr. Abdullah al-Lheedan, an associate professor at King Saud University, explains, "If the women go without a veil at all, people will notice and feel offended, and that's why the government here insists that the non-Muslim wears the minimum requirement of hijab to cover the whole body except the face and the hands."
