U.S Military Women And Military Spouses Should Be Protected, Not Penalized For Serving Overseas
    Statement by Susanne Martinez
    Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Vice President Public Policy May 22, 2003 Today, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate defeated amendments by Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) and Senators Murray (D-WA) and Snowe (R-ME), respectively, to restore access to privately funded abortion services for U.S. military women and military dependents overseas. More than 100,000 women live on American military bases overseas. These women, under the current law, are prohibited from obtaining abortion services in military hospitals, even with private funds. This ban threatens the lives of women by forcing them to obtain illegal or inadequate services. Our military women overseas are being denied services that are available to their counterparts in the United States. Is this how we repay women who protect our country with their lives? Now more than ever, the U.S. Congress should put the health and safety of its military women above its anti-choice agenda. Nothing less will do.

Stop rape of indigenous women and military injustice in Mexico
Over the last decade, there have been several reported rapes of indigenous women by military personnel in the Mexican state of Guerrero. All of the cases, initially handled by the civilian authorities, have subsequently been transferred to military jurisdiction, which has consistently failed to conduct proper investigations, guaranteeing impunity for those responsible. On February 16 2002, Soldiers raped 17 year-old Valentina Rosendo Cantú a member of the Tlapaneca (Me’phaa) indigenous group, as she washed clothes near her home in the community of Barranca Bejuco. A few days later, on February 22, 27 year-old Inés Fernández Ortega was raped in her home in Barranca Tecuani. While denying any involvement in the cases, the military set about gathering information in a highly intimidating manner. Soldiers arrived en masse in Valentina Rosendo’s community and asked her to identify her attackers from among a large group of soldiers. In January 2003, a number of soldiers went to the home of Inés Fernández and demanded her husband withdraw the accusation of rape. Fortunato Prisciliano refused to accept their demands and a couple of days later he was approached again. The soldiers then set up camp in the municipality for ten days, reportedly intimidating and harassing local people.

Women, the Military and Medical Misconceptions Michael Arnold Glueck and Robert J. Cihak
    Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004
Some great American philosopher (Will Rogers, if memory serves) once remarked that it's not the stuff that we don't know that gets us into trouble. It's the stuff we know that just ain't so. Subject currently under consideration: women and muscles. Specifically: military women and military muscles, and what's turning out to be "just not so." Nearly 40 years ago, the military began the long, arduous, and too often artless and hypocritical process of opening service, including combat service, to women. Resistance has been fierce and unrelenting; opponents have seized upon any reality or appearance of favoritism or double standards to invalidate the inclusion. And nowhere has the resistance and resentment been greater than in the matter of physical strength. From boot camps to think tanks, opponents have argued that women are inherently weaker, and that their lesser standards of physical fitness decrease combat readiness. But now, we're beginning to find that it ain't necessarily so.
