    Women, the Military and Militarisation:
    Some questions raised by
    the South African case
Presenter: Jacklyn Cock Jacklyn Cock is Head of the Sociology Department at the University of the Witwatersrand. Date: 24 September 1992 Venue: University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
    Introduction
The starting point for this paper is the connection between militarisation and gender. To understand this connection we cannot focus narrowly on the position of women in armies and military institutions. Militarisation - the mobilisation of resources for war - is a gendering process. It both uses and maintains the ideological construction of gender in the definitions of "masculinity" and "femininity". Women are widely cast in the role of "the protected" and "defended", often excluded from military service and almost always - whether in conventional or guerrilla armies - excluded from direct combat. This division - separating the protector from the protected, defender from defended - is crucial to both sexism and militarism. There are four ways in which the South African case is relevant to understanding the relation between gender and militarisation. Firstly, it illustrates how women - far from being marginalised from the process of militarisation - can actively contribute towards it. Secondly, it illustrates the similarities in the position of women in both conventional and guerrilla armies. Thirdly, the South African case illustrates the durability of patriarchy and the fragility of the gains made for women during periods of war. Fourthly, the South African experience sharpens the debate about the relation between equal rights and women's participation in armies.

On the whole, twelve member states of the North Atlantic Alliance have allowed their women to serve in auxiliary troops. Moreover, in seven countries they are entitled to serve in combat units, although in most cases with certain limitations. (2) Today only Luxembourg, the seat of the European Court of Justice, continues to bar its women from serving in combat units. But this fact can be neglected considering that its army has only 730 military personnel. One of the foreign armies which is of undoubted interest in this context is the Bundeswehr.

The history of women in the modern Czech military began during the Second World War, when some 200 women fought alongside men in battles on the Eastern and Western fronts. After the war most of these women were discharged from the military. The military was opened to women again in the early 1980s, when, due to manpower shortages and the positive results of women working in civilian positions, a small number of women were allowed to serve in certain positions. Since then, the number of women in the military has increased slowly but steadily, until now women represent 7.4 percent of professional personnel (see Figure 1) and perform many jobs traditionally assigned only to men.

World War II At the end of WW II there were approximately 12 million people in the U.S. armed forces including 280,000 women. By the summer of 1945 there were nearly 100,000 WACs, 86,000 WAVES, 18,000 women Marines, 11,000 SPARS, 57,000 Army nurses and 11,000 Navy nurses on active duty. More than 350,000 women had served in the military during the war. Nurses In June 1940 there were only 942 women in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. The following month a conference on the military's need for nurses led to the creation of the Nursing Council for National Defense which surveyed the number of nurses available for military duty and emphasized the need to train additional nurses. On October 8, 1940 Agnes Rosele became the first of the 4,019 Red Cross nurses who would be sworn into the ANC by the end of World War II. Her oath was administered by Capt. James Murchison the adjutant at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. and the ceremony was photgraphed by the Associated Press. In April 1941 agressive recruiting resulted in a pre-war monthly high of 689 nurses joining the ANC. At the beginning of the war Army and Navy nurses held no rank within the U.S. military, although Army Nurses held "relative rank" within their own corps. On March 13, 1942, Major Julia Flikke, Superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps was given a temporary rank of Colonel in the Army of the United States. Her assistant, Florence Blanchfield, received the temporary rank of Lt. Colonel AUS. Although both were allowed to wear the insignia of their rank they were denied the pay and benefits which accompanied it, an action justified by the Comptroller General on the basis that "women were

If you have any interest in the sexual revolution and its effect on military history, then this novel will capture your imagination and take you back through a unique American experience.
Title: VOLUNTARY FORCE Genre: Mainstream Fiction (Military Novel) Synopsis: The female protagonist in Voluntary Force , Ashton Sparks, and her WAC peers are transformed into Army officers in three months instead of four years at West Point. The novel plunges the reader into the Catch-22 of an ordinary female officer who struggles for acceptance in the peacetime military. The story is a battle of attrition with her winning by the smallest margin and leaving the battlefield with no more than a hollow victory. Voluntary Force is a character-driven story that will give millions of military women, yesterday's and today's, their own fictional heroine.
