Policy adopted by NOW in 1990 regarding women in the military.

WOMEN IN THE MILITARY
WHEREAS , during the Equal Rights Amendment fight, our opposition effectively fanned the flames of fear that women would be drafted and thrown into foxholes in some strange and distant country; and
WHEREAS , with women soldiers playing a more significant role in the Persian Gulf than ever before in our military history, we may have an unprecedented opportunity to bring to an end the long debate over whether women should be in combat, to expand career opportunities for women in the military and to remove what has been an overwhelming obstacle to women's equality and the Equal Rights Amendment; and
WHEREAS , exclusion of women from positions arbitrarily defined as "combat" is based on archaic ideas of what women and men are physically and emotionally capable of doing and outdated ideas of what modern military theory and combat are; and
WHEREAS , the definition of "combat" is ambiguous and varies from branch to branch; armed conflicts since World War II rarely involve readily definable front-lines, rear echelon units may be a 30 second missile flight from the so-called front-line, and in modern military theory rear support troops are destroyed first before assaulting those up front; and
WHEREAS , the combat exclusion does not protect women; 80-90% of the casualties in conflicts since World War II have been civilians and the majority have been women and children; women and children are subjected to violence every day on the streets and in our homes; rather than creating restrictions on women under the guise and illusion of protection, we would all be better protected by seeking diplomatic, economic and other non-violent ways to resolve international differences other than armed conflict; and

Military Nurses in Vietnam © Lou Sorrin - Prints Available In Memoriam Women in Vietnam From the wife of a soldier who was wounded: "most of all thank you for the care you gave my husband when he was wounded in Vietnam. And, thank you for all you gave to those who needed your care so much, when you were in Vietnam. I know I speak for the families and loved ones of those who made it home and for the families and loved ones of those who did not make it home: the sacrifices made by you and all of the medical personnel who served in Vietnam may not have been glorified; however, your presence was and continues to be held most dear by those for whom you cared and by their families and loved ones."

Noonie Fortin, author of Memories of MaggieMartha Raye: A Legend Spanning Three Wars Potpourri Of War: Labors of Love Remembered , and The Sarge's Thoughts, maintains a website devoted to women in the military. Excerpt: I am a woman who just happens to be a retired Army Reserve First Sergeant. I have shared my experience and expertise in researching, writing, finding a publisher, and "hitting the road" with my books Memories of MaggieMartha Raye: A Legend Spanning Three Wars, Potpourri Of War: Labors of Love Remembered, and The Sarge's Thoughts. I communicated with Martha "Colonel Maggie" Raye from 1988 until her death in 1994. I came to know and love her. I visited her several times in her Bel Air, California home, where I enjoyed her comments as we watched her old movies together, heard the stories, reminisced, and visited with this remarkable woman about her beloved frontline soldiers.

Thursday, September 24, 1998 Women were vital to military success in war By CAROL SMITH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER A small loophole in Navy regulations changed the course of history for American women. "Is there any regulation which specifies that a Navy yeoman be a man?" Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels asked in 1917. With that question, he solved an emerging manpower crisis as America readied itself for war, and he also made military history, said Lettie Gavin, Seattle author of "American Women in World War I: They Also Served," (University Press of Colorado, 295 pages, $29.95). Gavin, a retired former editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, spent several years racing to track down stories of WWI women before they all passed away. Many of those stories are captured in her book, which is going into its third printing. The women were critical to the success of the military's operation in Europe.

At one time there was discussion about drafting women nurses, but this was never implemented. Some women military asked to go to Vietnam, and some were sent against their wishes and even against recruiter's promises, but all were volunteers because they voluntarily signed up for the military.

Women Should Not Serve in Military Combat
By Phyllis Schlafly
Women Should Not Serve in Military Combat
by Phyllis Schlafly Has our nation sunk so low that we are willing to send our daughters and young mothers into battle? Is chivalry completely dead? Breathes there a man with soul so dead that he will not rise up and defend his wife, his sweetheart, his mother and his daughter, against those who want to wound or capture them, whoever they may be? Most Americans were shocked to learn that at least one American woman is a Prisoner of War in the clutches of Saddam Hussein (and a couple of other servicewomen are missing), but the feminists see this as proof that women are advancing toward equality with men on the battlefield. In point of fact, women under Saddam Hussein are not equal, whether they are Iraqi women or U.S. POWs. Shoshana Johnson, age 30, of El Paso, Texas, the single mother of a two-year-old daughter, was part of a U.S. Army maintenance unit ambushed and captured after the convoy made a wrong turn. She had signed up to be an Army cook and never dreamed she would be sent into a situation where she could be captured by an evil regime.

WWI
Thirty Thousand Women Were There
In 1901 and 1908 the establishment of the Army and Navy Nurse Corps opened the door for women in the military but ever so slightly. It wasn't until the United States got involved in World War One that some parts of the government got serious about using woman power. As the Army stumbled around bureaucratic red tape trying to figure out how to enlist women the Navy simply ignored the War Department dissenters and quickly recruited women. Nearly 13,000 women enlisted in the Navy and the Marine Corps on the same status as men and wore a uniform blouse with insignia. The Navy's policy was extended to the Coast Guard, but personnel records from World War I contain scarcely any references to the Coast Guard Yeomanettes. A handful of them apparently were employed at the diminutive Coast Guard headquarters building in Washington. Nineteen-year-old twin sisters Genevieve and Lucille Baker transferred from the Naval Coastal Defense Reserve to become the first uniformed women in the Coast Guard. With the war's end the Coast Guard Yeomanettes, along with their Navy and Marine Corps counterparts, were mustered out of the service.
These were the first women in the U.S to be admitted to some military rank and status.
