    Dear sisters in military families,
Invitation to protest with us as part of the Global Women's Strike on International Women’s Day to defend our loved ones
Saturday 6 March in Trafalgar Square
We write as the Iraqi Women’s League (IWL) UK which is the oldest women’s organisation in Iraq. Since 1952 when it was founded, the IWL , which is independent of all political parties, has played a significant role in the struggle against tyranny and repression in Iraq. Many of our members were executed or disappeared and thousands of our Iraqi sisters were tortured, raped and imprisoned, just for being members of our women’s movement, while the US and UK governments were the friends of our torturers.
We write as mothers, sisters, daughters and wives of people now living in Iraq who find themselves on the front line of this horrendous war. We are desperately worried about them, as you must be about your family members who are serving in the UK military forces.

    March 28, 2003
In this special month set aside to honor women's history, we need to look to our past to see clearly into our future. Our strength and our resolve come from a rich heritage, so it is appropriate that we reflect on the accomplishments of the past to see where the future may lead. In particular, it is the women who have served our country in the military who have had a major impact in setting the course for the women of today and tomorrow. It is most appropriate today for us to remember what they did, and to recognize their deeds. These very special people include all the women who are serving, and who ever served in the defense of our nation. From the American Revolution to the present, the women in our military have a proud heritage of always moving ahead, of being pioneers. Let's take a brief walk through history - or in this case, "herstory." During the American Revolution, several women who were literally pioneers were also pioneering the battlefield. Molly Pitcher, whose real name was Mary Hayes McCauly, earned her nickname by carrying water and grog to her husband and other American artillerymen of the Revolution. She earned her fame, however, at New Jersey's Battle of Monmouth on

By Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, Arlington, VA, Tuesday, September 9, 2003. Dr. Wolfowitz ...[Applause] This is close to the anniversary of a very special day that I think Americans and the whole world are going to remember for the rest of our lives and probably many generations beyond. th . In the aftermath people came together through this traditional art form to share their grief, to express sympathy for victims and their families, and to show their unity and resolve. Every day, people from all walks of life pass through the September 11 th memorial at the Pentagon, and many of them record their thoughts in a book that is kept there for that purpose. There are messages of sympathy from people of every state and many foreign countries. Another visitor the Minister of Defense from India wrote that his country "is firmly with the United States in this fight. Freedom and democracy are worth defending at any cost." And he concluded, "Together we shall prevail."

The Department of Defense announced today a new and enhanced role for the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS), which will be revitalized in an effort to make it more relevant, efficient and effective. The 53 year-old charter under which DACOWITS operated focused on attracting more women to military service. Today's military, with more than 200,000 women currently on active duty, bears little resemblance to that of 1951. Accordingly, the Defense Department has developed an improved charter to better address the needs of women in the military and their professional development. The committee's new charter will also broaden its focus to include improving conditions for those who serve and their families, whose sacrifices are yet another form of service to the nation. The revised charter sets a priority on recruiting and retaining highly qualified professional women while considering the treatment, employment, integration, and well being of women service members.

    The New Jersey Monument
The Women Veterans Monument stands out among markers lining the Memorial Walkway section at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in North Hanover, New Jersey. The monument is as unique as the women it honors. After ten years of planning and fund raising, the New Jersey Advisory Committee for Women Veterans dedicated the monument on June 6, 2003, the 59th anniversary of D-Day. The 30-inch high statue of a colonial era "Minutewoman" is shown wearing traditional Revolutionary War period clothing, carrying a weapon in one hand and holding a lantern in the other, while shielding a child. It shows the courage and conviction of women serving in times of conflict, according to Col. Maria Morgan, deputy adjutant of the New Jersey National Guard. "An often forgotten fact is that all the women veterans and all the women in uniform were the true volunteers always," said Morgan. The 100-pound statue sits atop a black pentagonal monolith, with each side representing one branch of the military displaying insignias of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The words "The Spirit of the American Woman Veteran" are inscribed on the bottom of the granite base.

    Vietnam Southeast Asia
Over 58,000 Americans killed, 200,000 wounded and Women Were There! After one of the most futile conflicts in the history of war, scorned by flag burners and shunned by citizens, G.I's returned to find respect for our troops hitting an all time low. The reaction of the American people to our military was despicable. It has taken years for many servicemen and women to get over it- and some have not.
What is truly unconscionable in the annals of American military history is the fact that little or no data exists on the women who served and, yes, were injured or killed, in Southeast Asia during the Viet Nam era.
Accurate records on how many women were there, what decorations they earned, where they served - and most important - what after effects they have suffered - and continue to suffer - are nonexistent.
However from anecdotal reports, letters, from books by those who were there, from research papers by military historians, and from the excellent text "Women in the Military - An Unfinished Revolution", by Major General Jeanne Holm, USAF (Ret), we can glean the following overview.
Over five hundred WACs were stationed in Vietnam.
