America dedicates memorial to service women
By Tech. Sgt. Tammy Cournoyer Air Force News Service More than 30,000 people gathered outside the cemetery's entrance to witness the dedication of America's first memorial honoring women who have served their country in the armed forces. Among the crowd were service women ranging from former Word War I vets to those currently serving. Although the $21.5 million memorial is an architectural wonder, it is the reasons for its existence that prevailed at the dedication ceremony. The Women in Military Service for America Memorial site takes up 4.2 acres and features a 30-feet high neoclassical retaining wall. It hosts a 33,000-square foot education center with a Hall of Honor, 196-seat theater, and computer register of service women. Using the register's database, visitors can access photos, military histories and individual stories of registered women. The memorial's roof is an arc of glass tablets, 250 feet in diameter, inscribed with quotes by and about women who have served in defense of the United States. "This memorial is more than a remembrance, it's also a reminder that women in the military's service to America is not new and should never again be allowed to go unrecognized," said Secretary of Defense William Cohen. "We don't allow women in service as a social favor; we do not train women in the name of a noble social experiment. Today, women in uniform are part of the national security of the United States, and this isn't a modern nicety, it's a military necessity."
