I will take you to the other side so that you may return to your village with your baskets filled with balance and prosperity. I will nourish you and quench your thirst. I am resourceful and you will be safe. From "Yellow Woman" by Rochelle Bayless Simon YELLOW WOMAN My family knows to paint my face yellow when I pass to the other side so that the Great Mother knows that I am a woman. I am Kochinnenako and I dance on the sacred circle that surrounds my people. I am a Woman’s Woman, the spirit of all women. I encircle all women from the first who emerged at the beginning of time to the last to pass over at the end of time. I am from the beginning of time and from the future. I was thought into existence by Thought Woman. The Great Corn Mother, Irriaku, breathed her yellow life into me. Red Spider Woman weaved together the fabric that connects me to the world. I continue to exist through the blue Old Woman who tends the heart fire. I exist through all of the Grandmothers of the light who bring us Dawn and who guide, suggest, and urge vibrant life though and into inner and outer worlds. Continued click here.

African-American Women
On-line Archival Collections
Special Collections Library, Duke University
Elizabeth Johnson Harris: Life Story Elizabeth Johnson Harris was born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1867 to parents who had been slaves. Her 85 page handwritten memoir provides glimpses of her early childhood, of race relations, of her own ambivalence about her place as an African-American in society, and of the importance of religion and education in her life. This on-line collection includes full text of her memoirs as well as several of her poems and vignettes that were published in various newspapers during her lifetime. Vilet Lester Letter Slave letters are very rare documents. This letter from Vilet Lester is one of less than a dozen such letters we have been able to identify among the vast amount of plantation records held at the Duke Special Collections Library. In this particular case, Vilet's letter stands alone with virtually no other documents - no slave lists, work records, or owner's letters - to give us further information about her. Although many of the facts of Vilet Lester's life may be elusive, she still gives us a rare and precious view into slave life through this letter. Hannah Valentine and Lethe Jackson: Slave Letters Hannah Valentine and Lethe Jackson were house slaves at Montcalm, the family home of David and Mary Campbell, located in Abingdon, Virginia. During the years David Campbell served as Governor of Virginia (1847-1850), he and his family moved into the Governor's mansion in Richmond, taking several of their slaves with them but leaving Hannah and Lethe to care for the homestead. These letters were written by Hannah Valentine and Lethe Jackson to their mistresses and other slave family members during this time period. The letters provide a rare firsthand glimpse into the lives of slaves and the relationships they had with their owners.

The inclusion of women in all decision-making processes is a requirement of a democratic society. WAW advocates for the representation of women in all areas of life in Afghanistan: political, social, cultural and economic.

131. History Of Women
Contributions made by women to the United States Naval Observatory.
http://maia.usno.navy.mil/women_history/history.html
The Contributions of Women to the United States Naval Observatory: The Early Years.
The United States Naval Observatory has a long and unique role in the American astronomical community. Although the observatory is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the contributions made by our women staff members have been confined to the last 100 years. This is in part due to the restrictions placed on women by society, as well as those on women in a military institution, and those imposed by the mission of the Observatory. On this page, I will examine the lives and contributions of the handful of young women who came to the Observatory before 1920.
Part 1: History and Background
Women were breaking into the field of astronomy in the late nineteenth century for many reasons. Women were often used at observatories because they could be paid less than men in the same position. Americas most prominent female astronomer Maria Mitchell received a salary of only $800 a year while her male colleagues at Vassar received $2500 a year. In 1900, after almost 20 years of service to the Harvard College Observatory, Williamina Fleming was receiving a salary of just $1,500 a year while male assistants were paid at least $2,500. Flemming's boss, Edward Pickering wrote in his 1898 annual report that women were "Capable of doing as much good routine work as astronomers who would receive larger salaries. Three or four times as many assistants can thus be employed." At the USNO men and women computers (referred to as "Subprofessionals" at the Observatory) were paid the same salary, $1,200 a year in 1906, as dictated by a pay scale set in 1892. However, men were given a path to better job opportunities and were usually not limited to computing for very long.

Empowering Women in Sports
Over two decades have passed since the enactment of Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in federally-funded education, including athletics. As a result of Title IX, women and girls have benefited from more athletic participation opportunities and more equitable facilities. Because of Title IX, more women have received athletic scholarships and thus opportunities for higher education that some may not have been able to afford otherwise. In addition, because of Title IX the salaries of coaches for women's teams increased. But women and girl athletes have yet to reach parity with men. Women are still only about one-third of interscholastic and intercollegiate athletes. In addition, women college athletes receive less than 26% of college sports' operating budgets, and less than 28% of college recruiting money (Women's Sports Foundation, 2001). This Empowering Women in Sports report is a publication of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Task Force on Women and Girls in Sports.
