By: Dr. Kathleen Hall
Commuting has become a time of isolation, aggression and alienation. Thirty-four percent of Americans spend 30 minutes or more commuting daily. For many of us, commuting is a rare time to be alone and therefore a prime opportunity for health and renewal. Transform your daily drive into a nurturing, replenishing journey that leaves you ready to face your day.

Renuka Vishwananthan discusses the obstacles and opportunities.
November 2001 : Empirical evidence shows that women contribute significantly to the running of family businesses mostly in the form of unpaid effort and skills. The value of this effort is underestimated both by the families that take it for granted and in academic studies. On the other hand, many of the enterprises defined as being run by women (that is, enterprises in which women hold the controlling share) are in fact run in their names by men who control operations and decision making. Programmes meant to reach women entrepreneurs can succeed only if they take note of this paradox as well as of the familial and social conditioning that reduces the confidence, independence and mobility of women. Programmes for encouraging entrepreneurship among women are doomed to fail or at best to succeed partially when taken up in isolation. This is because entrepreneurship by definition implies being in control of one's life and activities. It is precisely this independence that society has denied to women all along. Promoting entrepreneurship for women will require an even greater reversal of traditional attitudes than the mere creation of jobs for women would. This does not mean that we should wait for societal change to take place first. But it does imply that the programme should go beyond subsidies and credit allocation to attitudinal changes, group formation, training and other support services.

Technology for women in business 29 June 2004 A government initiative called Technology for Women in Business is helping South Africa's women entrepreneurs get access to the applied science and technology they need to catapult their businesses into the big league. The initiative, started in 1998 under the auspices of the department of trade and industry, aims to get women to harness technology so that they can move from the sidelines to the mainstream of the economy. The programme focuses on women entrepreneurs at all levels of business, from micro to macro-enterprises, and seeks to fast-track their skills development to enable them to embrace appropriate technologies. Various science councils and organisations are partners in the initiative, offering training and mentorship programmes for women. Technology for Women in Business is mentored by Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Lindiwe Hendricks, and run by the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Mandisa Manjezi, formerly a programme officer at the Danish International Development Agency, is the programme manager.
