Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Wombat , burrowing marsupial native to Australia and Tasmania. The teeth of wombats grow continuously, and, as in rodents , a single pair of chisel-like incisors is found in each jaw. The animals have long claws that are adapted for digging, and they live in burrows, from which they emerge at night to feed on grasses and other plants. The young are born singly once a year, and each is carried in the mother's pouch for about six months. The common wombat of southern Australia is the largest, attaining a length of 70 to 120 cm (28 to 47 in). It is stocky; has a short, stubby tail; and its thick, coarse fur varies in color from yellow to black. It has a placid disposition and is easily domesticated. From the same area are the two species of hairy-nosed wombat, which differ from the common species in having longer, pointed ears; a hairy muzzle; and soft, silky fur. Wombats have been nearly exterminated in some areas because it is thought that they damage crops and fences; that their burrows are a danger to livestock; and that rabbits, an introduced pest, may live in wombat burrows. One of the hairy-nosed wombats is considered an endangered species.

Wombats: koalas' first cousins?
Reporter: Peter Young Tuesday, 13 July 2004 Here’s trivia question for you: what animal is the closest relation to the koala? The answer is, the wombat. I suspect that answer should have been upside down at the bottom of the page, but I have great faith in your honesty.
You won’t find wombats roaming around the Gold Coast Hinterland, but they can be found in the border ranges and they are so typically Australian that it’s worth having a bit of a look at them.
There are three sorts of wombats in Australia. The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat lives in Queensland and is very rare with a remnant population of about 113, most of which are males. As you can imagine, this is not a particularly healthy state of affairs for a species.
The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat is the faunal emblem of South Australia (more trivia) while the Common Wombat is found largely in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania with a modest sampling in Queensland and South Australia.

One Of Our Wombats Is Missing
Zenobi
Jan 1991 YS61 UNR Mike Gerrard
I know what you're thinking: how does Mike manage to review his own game without giving it at least twelve out of ten in every category? Well it's something I've been worrying about too! I obviously couldn't do it myself, and even if I asked someone else to do it, then it wouldn't be easy for them, knowing I'd be reading the review before it was printed. So bugger it, I thought, when a hairy little Balrog offered to do the review for me - I've got to print something. I've not let him give it any marks (in case the suspicious amongst you should suspect him of bias) but other than that, over to you, hairy little Balrog...
With his feet firmly planted on the kitchen table and a steaming mug of coffee in his hand, Balrog was attempting to remove a large wad of bluish-grey fluff from the depths of his belly-button with the aid of the bread-knife. The rattle of the letter-box shattered the early morning silence, startling the Balrog, causing him to swing the knife downwards. Luckily for him it caught the safety-pin that was holding his flies together and glanced off to one side.
"Whoops," he cried, "that was a close escape. Mrs Balrog would never have forgiven me if I'd spilt blood on the carpet."
