It can weigh up to 40 kg (88 lb) and measure more than one meter (3.3') long. Although wombats would seem to be slow and clumsy, they can move up to 40 km/h (25 mph) over a short distance. Wombats Three common wombats live the good life at the Australia Zoo: Dozer and Minibus Chisel , a very naughty male. Common wombats live in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. They prefer heath, coastal scrub and open forest habitats, where the soil tends to be loose and easy to dig. Wombats love to burrow. They are, in fact, the world's largest burrowing mammals. With broad, flattened heads, compact bodies, short, powerful limbs and wide, large-clawed feet, digging is a cinch for the common wombat. A single wombat will establish several burrows, called warrens, in its home range. These are typically built on grassy banks above creeks or gullies, where they have easy access to native grasses and drinking water. Large wombat warrens can include numerous underground branches, several sleeping chambers, and multiple entrances and exits, extending a total length of up to 650 feet. Wombats also build many small warrens, which are usually less than 7 feet in length, to be used as quick escape routes when predators are afoot. They are solitary creatures, known for their intolerance of others. Wombats frequently chase intruders from their burrows and home areas. Curiously though, they have also been observed visiting each other's burrows in apparent peace.

The Wombats tour is no easy project; taking a team of busy MBA students half way around the world, and beating most of the world when we get there.
The 2005 Wombats Team at Duke University, North Carolina.
Once we touched down in Duke we had dinner together as a team after which we joined the teams from other b-schools for a few beers at the official kick-off function. But after that it was down to work. We had a training run at 10 the next morning in preparation for our first match, however due to inclement weather our scheduled opening match against Duke was postponed until the next day, Saturday morning. "Harvard was dispatched 86-0."
"Wherever we were on those two days became the hottest spot in to wn."
"The final would prove an agonizingly close match."
The Wombats meet Mike Tyson.
It was hard to have come so far, played so well and leave empty handed. But not even two hard days of rugby and the disappointment of that final 10 minutes could dampen the Wombats spirit on Sunday night and Monday. Wherever we were on those two days became the hottest spot in town and an invite back to the team hotel after party was a sought after commodity.
The Wombats tour is no easy project; taking a team of busy MBA students half way round the world, and beating most of the world when we get there. This would not have been possible without the support of our sponsor, Pacific Road Corporate Finance and the efforts of our President - Rory Fagan and Captain - Fiachra Sweeney. We also owe a debt of gratitude to our coach, John Morrison and wish him well as he moves on to bigger and better things (or at least better paid things!).

The Wombat: Common Wombats in Australia
Barbara Triggs
University of New South Wales Press 1996 A book review by Danny Yee Anyone who has spent much time in the bush in south-eastern Australia will have encountered the signs of the common wombat Vombatus ursinus : the entrances to their burrows are obvious and their cubical scats are the most distinctive of any Australian mammal. Being nocturnal, however, wombats are rarely seen most commonly crossing roads at night, or as road-kill and have not been as well studied as Australia's other iconic mammals. In The Wombat Barbara Triggs gives an entertaining and informative presentation of what is known about them. She begins with an overview of wombat evolution and taxonomy and distribution. There are two rarer species of hairy-nosed wombats, found in Queensland and South Australia, as well as the common wombat covered here, which is found in south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. Other related species are now extinct; the closest living relative of the wombat is the koala. Wombat burrows are most commonly dug into slopes, beneath rocks; they are where wombats spend most of the day, sleeping. As well as providing protection, burrows maintain a temperature between 4 and 25 degrees celsius even in winter and summer extremes.

Why were wombats created with their pouch facing backward?
Crystal Clear Creation: Unlock the secrets of nature, wildlife, the world, from a creationist, Christian, non-evolution perspective.
Why wombats wear their pouches backward
The wombat is a round, stocky, barrel-shaped mammal that inhabits many parts of Australia. It is about one meter (three feet) long, with four short legs and almost no tail. It looks like a small bear. Wombats are marsupials. This means the female wombat, like the kangaroo and wallaby, has an external pouch in which she carries her young. Even though wombats and kangaroos look nothing alike, some evolutionists believe they evolved from the same basic possum-like creatures. One major difference between kangaroos and wombats is that the wombat's pouch opens backwards, yet the kangaroo's does not. Why?
Wombats burrow
The wombat is a burrowing animal; the kangaroo is not. Wombats build long burrows up to 20 meters (66 feet) long, using their strong shovel-shaped claws to dig. Kangaroos do not dig tunnels. If the wombat had a forward-opening pouch like the kangaroo does, its pouch could clog up with soil while it was excavating. In His wisdom, God the Creator designed the female wombat with a pouch that would protect her young, while allowing her freedom to excavate speedily and efficiently.

I am currently working on my own fact filled wombat page. I haven't finished it yet but I'm putting out what I have. Expect more information and some rearranging. To compensate for what I am currently missing at the bottom of this page I have some links for you to follow. These links are to web pages with wombat facts and wombat fun. I also have links to wombat pictures. I have not checked each link yet. My wombat picture is currently missing. I am going to try to get permission to use it.
Brief Description
Wombats are thick-bodied animals that have short, powerful legs with strong claws used for burrowing. They range in length from 70 to 120 cm (27-47 in) and weigh up to 35 kg (77 lb). Their heads are relatively large but they have very small tails and small eyes and short ears. Wombats are grayish brown. The common wombat is coarse haired with a naked nose and rounded ears. The two species of hairy-nosed wombats have soft fur and a hairy muzzle and pointed ears that are slightly longer than those of the common wombat. The wombat, like many famous Australian animals is a marsupial. The female has a pouch but, unlike a kangaroo, this pouch opens rearward. This helps prevent dirt from entering the pouch as the wombat digs.

Evolution, Druids, and Wombats
Volume 7, Issue 27 When the calendar stopped working in Evolution, it hampered my efforts to get Palm RDF data into iCal. This is how I got it working again. A program is only complete when its last user is dead. I’ve been trying to get my Palm calendar data exported to iCal format. What that really means is, I’ve been trying to get my Palm RDF into RdfCalendar . And what that really means is, I’ve been trying to figure out the RDF Calendar stuff. None of which, as it turns out, has a whole lot to do with this essay. This essay, inspired in part by an offhand remark Dan made in irc (credit where credit is due), is about getting the Evolution calendar working and getting iCal data into it. I’ve been running Evolution about once every six months or so, whenever I decide I have a few minutes to to work on this calendaring project. Running Evolution that infrequently has it’s own amusing side effect. Having gotten all of my calendar data into it once upon a time, when I start it now, it pops up a reminder window for every single event that’s occurred since the last time I ran it . At an average of 15–20 telcons a week and 24 weeks in six months, thats a lot of popups!
