    Wombats
What do wombats look like? Wombats are stout, sturdy marsupials. They grow to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kg. They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. Wombats have been known to live for up to 27 years in captivity. Two of the three species of wombat occur in NSW:
    • The common wombat , most widespread of the two, has a large, naked snout covered in grainy skin.
    • The much rarer southern hairy-nosed wombat has larger ears than the common wombat, and its snout is coated with fine hairs.

The northern hairy-nosed wombat is presumed extinct in NSW. Where do they live? The common wombat lives mainly in wet, partly forested areas on the coast, and on the ranges and western slopes. The southern hairy-nosed wombat prefers dry, open country. Southern hairy-nosed wombats are very rare, and until recently were thought to be extinct in NSW. They are currently listed as endangered.

The Joy of Wombats
Stumpers-L is not just a question and answer service. It is not just an archive of arcane and academic documentation. It is a community with its own peculiar culture. We call each other wombats, and we are obsessed with wombat sightings. This page explores a little of that culture. We regret that we no longer catalogue wombat-related web sites (furry and otherwise), but we recommend the following site which does:

Wombats feed on grasses sedges and roots , and dig extensive burrow systems with rodent-like front teeth and powerful claws. Although mainly crepuscular and nocturnal , wombats will also venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. They are not as easily seen as many animals , but leave ample evidence of their passage, treating fences as a minor inconvenience to be gone through or under. Wombats are herbivores , their diet consisting mostly of grass Wombats, like all the larger living marsupials, are part of the

Web!
Wombats are cute furry creatures from Australia. There are not nearly enough web pages about them, and this page seeks to help fill this obvious shortfall. Wombats belong to the marsupial order of species from Australia. The other marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, wallaby, bandicoot, bilby, nabarlek, quokka, quoll, tasmanian devil, tasmanian tiger and ringtail possum. There is also one species of marsupial found in North America, the Opossum. For information about the the three species of the wombat family and details of their lifestyle and life cycle, see the alt.animals.wombat Frequently Asked Questions list. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is a severely endangered species and the other types are at risk too. Wombats are really much nicer creatures than koalas (too irritable when not drugged up on eucalyptus) and kangaroos (too stupid, and too tiring to watch). Why isn't anyone doing more to save the wombat?

WOMBAT
The wombat lives in hilly forest country and it likes to burrow underground. A burrow can be as long as 20 metres. Wombats quickly dig complicated tunnels with their strong legs and sharp claws, and then they push loosened soil away with their hind feet. Did you know that a wombat likes to live alone? Wombats live alone in their burrows, but other wombats may be in a tunnel close by, or sometimes burrows can interconnect. Wombats are very shy animals. They usually rest in or near their burrows during the day and come out at night to eat. Farmers consider wombats pests because they damage crops and fences, and cattle may break their legs by stepping in wombat burrows. The burrows also provide shelter for rabbits which also damage crops. For these reasons, farmers are often eager to rid their farms of all wombats. The hairy-nosed wombat lives in dry, grassy regions of Australia. This kind of wombat uses its burrow to control its temperature. By staying in its burrow during the day, the wombat keeps cool and conserves water in the summer, and stays warm in the winter. back

Wombats are wild animals, not domesticated pets, and as such should be left in the wild where they belong. In most places in Australia, wombats are protected and it's illegal to keep them as pets. Wombats need special care and a special diet. They're extremely strong and can be very destructive. They can tear holes in fences, doors, and even walls. There's not much that will stop a wombat other than concrete or steel.
