1. Wombats
Contains a description and photos of the three species of Wombat.
http://www.wombat.echidna.id.au/animals/wombat1.htm
Wombats are without a doubt (in my extremely biased opinion) the most lovable of Australia's many marsupials. They are large enough to substitute for your average family dog and are just as playful - at least while they're young. It must be said however that Wombats don't automatically do well in captivity and only a handful would make a suitable pet. Please don't write to me asking where you can buy one! You can't. I don't reply to such emails. In particular anyone outside Australia should realize that there is a good chance that any Australian fauna that you might come upon has been smuggled out of this country. A high proportion of smuggled fauna dies in transit. Don't buy Australian fauna unless you are certain it has been obtained legally. Otherwise you are just helping the murderers. Wonderful Wombats There are three species of Wombats. The most numerous and widespread is the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus ). The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latrifrons) is an arid climate animal and only lives in a few areas of southern South Australia and Western Australia. Its range was much wider before European settlement. It is well adapted to it's harsh environment where it must survive without water in high temperatures. The available food tends to be fibrous and low in water and protein. It lives in extensive warrens where the atmosphere is cool and humid during

Stumpers-L is an email group or conference where Reference Librarians post questions which have them stumped. With a worldwide community of over 1,000 librarians and other experts sharing their knowledge and resources, Stumpers-L is the world's largest and most versatile reference desk and the answers often make for pretty interesting reading. On this, the unofficial page (maintained independently of Dominican University), you will find ancillary and extraneous oddities, including an answer to the question which stumps all newcomers, "What's all this about wombats?!" "Stumpers does the difficult instantly, but the impossible might take a few minutes" Jane Richardson, 23 Oct. 1995 See also the official Stumpers-L page , maintained by students of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University (formerly Rosary College), Illinois.

Wombie Information
Wombat Information Homepage If you don't know what a wombat is, or have never seen one, then you've come to the right place! Common Wombat (courtesy of Womland , used with permission) Wombats are large burrowing mammals that are found only in Australia. Since wombats are quite timid and are primarily nocturnal, they're difficult to observe in their natural habitat. Consequently they have not been well studied. Wombats weren't even noticed by European settlers for about ten years. Information about the wombat is rather scarce, and what there is is often contradictory. Information was gathered from a number of sources, so differing viewpoints are included where appropriate. For a complete list of sources, see the reference page.

They are mammals A female wombat's pouch opens backwards so that when mum is digging she doesn't cover her baby with sand. Because wombat babies live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk, wombats are marsupials Baby wombats stay with their mum for about two years. They then have to look after themselves. Wombats have thick soft fur. Their strong legs and claws are good for digging burrows to live in. They are very shy. They are nocturnal animals. Most of the day they sleep in a burrow. In the evening or at night they go looking for food. They are herbivores To keep themselves clean they have a dust bath. They lie on their side and scoop sand over themselves. They can swim. Their teeth grow continuously, so if they break a tooth it just re-grows. Wombat droppings are called scats. Each wombat's scats have a different smell. They leave them outside their burrows.

Secret Sex Life of Wombats
Reporter : Paul Willis Producer : Louise Heywood Researcher : Robyn Smith Transcript Related Info 7 November 2002 How do you get a wombat to have sex? Apparently they’re pretty picky and can get nasty if they don’t fancy their date. Catriona McCallum, thinks trying to get wombats to 'get it on' is the best job in the world. She's been studying the mating habits of wombats in an attempt to start a successful captive breeding program for common wombats at Western Plains Zoo in NSW. Her research into their fertility cycle, preferred habitat and eating habits has been a success with a world first outcome: twin baby wombats. This captive breeding program for common wombats is being developed for use as a model to help save the highly endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats.

... Tasmania Online Wombats are large, lumbering marsupials which live only in Australia. They grow to a length of about 3 feet (1m) and weigh approximately 88 lbs (40kg). Wombats live in burrows which they dig in the ground. To assist with their burrowing, they have thick, muscular legs and strong claws. Common wombats (pictured) are found in Tasmania and in some parts of New South Wales. Hairy-nosed wombats are rarer and found only in the more arid regions of Australia. Wombats usually forage for food at either dawn or dusk, avoiding activity during the hotter parts of the day, when they often bask in the sun at their burrow entrance. Wattle the wombat, 1.98Mb QuickTime movie (at Bonorong Wildlife Park) Wombats generally eat grasses and leaves in bush clearings. The wombat population in Tasmania is significant, and wombats tunneling under fences after grazing on farmlands sometimes annoys farmers. Burrows are usually well hidden and wild wombats are not often seen by the public.
