Wolves: Groupies Gone Wild
Newsweek May 16 issue - The sun is setting over Yellowstone National Park-showtime for the wolf groupies who have gathered on a hillside. Peering through high-powered scopes, they watch two wolves trot across a grassy plain. Excitement sweeps the crowd as No. 302, a jet-black male, crouches as an antelope approaches. He fails to nab his prey, but the spectators are thrilled nonetheless. "I'm addicted," says Jonathan Johnson, who drives eight hours from Washington state at least once a month to watch wolves. "Once you see them, you're hooked." Millions of tourists visit Yellowstone every summer to see grizzlies, elk and bison, but only the wolves have developed a cult following. Like sports fans, groupies can recite the stats, ages and histories of favorite wolves. The faithful travel from all over the world and gather in chat rooms to relay the thrill of seeing a pack take down an elk. At least 34 tour companies cater to wolf tourists; experts estimate that this niche tourism generates tens of millions of dollars. Researchers chalk up this phenomenon to humans' love of dogs and the inherent drama of wolf packs. Alpha males and females struggle to maintain power and hold their clans together. Last year spectators mourned when a legendary alpha female was banished by her younger sister. "There's a soap-opera story line with wolves," says one biologist. And there are plenty of tourists eager to tune in.

Decade of the Wolf The release of thirty-one Canadian gray wolves into Yellowstone in 1995 and 1996 began what is arguably the most successful, and at the same time controversial feat of conservation in our nation's history. Co-authored with wolf project leader Doug Smith, this is an unforgettable account of a heart-warming and at times, heart-wrenching decade. The Great Divide At a time when we've come to expect both predictability and immediate gratification from nature, The Great Divide celebrates the role of the Rocky Mountains in sparking the boundless potential of the American imagination. Filled with vivid tales of the characters who have peopled this majestic region, from original Indian inhabitants and European explorers, to today's adventure travelers toting satellite phones into the wild. Hawks Rest What's it like to spend three months living in a rustic cabin in the most remote part of the continental United States? Not as peaceful as you might imagine. In addition to up-close encounters with wolves and grizzlies, Gary meets a wild assortment of colorful characters. Winner of two major book awards

T-Wolves, Wild owners team up
ST. PAUL, Minn. Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad has agreed to sell his team to Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and Wild lead investor Robert Naegele Jr. for $120 million if a new stadium is built. "It's been a great ride," Pohlad said Friday, recalling the 1987 and 1991 World Series championships during his 16 years as team owner. "This is a day of high emotion for me." "We are very optimistic and very pleased that things worked out over in St. Paul," he said. However, he stressed that the sale doesn't become final until a stadium is built. The deal faces several formidable obstacles, but Pohlad said he's optimistic that it will be accomplished. St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman announced the proposed sale Thursday night and expressed gratitude to the Pohlad family. Coleman has sought the sale as part of a plan to build a new stadium along the city's riverfront and entice the Twins to leave Minneapolis. Under the agreement, Pohlad would hand over control of the team to Taylor, owner of Minnesota's NBA team, and Naegele, managing partner of the NHL expansion Wild once the new stadium is assured. Until then, the team will be under dual stewardship, said Twins President Jerry Bell. Plans for a new $325 million stadium, as now structured, are contingent on St. Paul voters approving a Nov. 2 referendum calling for a sales tax increase that would finance one-third of the facility.

About Us
W ild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary , formerly known as Candy Kitchen Rescue Ranch is a nonprofit organization providing safe sanctuary to abused and abandoned captive-bred wolves and wolf-dog crosses. With focus on education, ecology and the environment, responsible ownership of wolf dogs and the humane care of all animals, companion or otherwise. We are located in the Zuni Mountains near the small town of Ramah, New Mexico. Candy Kitchen Rescue Ranch (as we were then known as) was founded in 1991 by fine artist Jacque Evans. The unlikely name came from the fact that the sanctuary is located at an old ranch headquarters of the same name. We changed our name in 2004 as "candy kitchen" proved just too confusing, choosing instead a name more reflective of our mission. Jacque had originally supported Candy Kitchen's efforts with the sale of her art work until 1993, when Barbara Berge moved to the area and served as General Manager until 2003. Leyton Cougar joined the team in 1996, and now serves as Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary's Director.

Once feared extinct in the wild, Mexican wolves are making a comeback! The National Zoo is working with over 40 other zoos and breeding facilities to help save Mexican wolves. To keep the population genetically healthy as it grows, zoos collaborate breeding efforts through an American Zoo and Aquarium Association Species Survival Plan (SSP).
Wolves from the Species Survival Plan are selected for reintroduction into the wild. But before they go, they live in near-wild conditions in order to get used to living on their own. Wolves are fitted with radio collars so biologists can closely monitor their movements after their release. This type of research is critical to protecting and managing endangered wildlife.

January 31, 2003 Red wolves are making a comeback. A recovery program has taken the species from extinction in the wild to a restored population of more than 100 in northeastern North Carolina. But while conservationists consider the program a success, many challenges still lie ahead for the species that once ranged across much of the southeastern United States. "The red wolf is the first effort to restore a predator in the wild after it was officially declared extinct in the wild," said Bud Fazio, team leader of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Red Wolf Recovery Program. While little is known about historic red wolf numbers, these canids once ranged across the southeast from Florida to possibly as far north as New England and west to Texas. As the country started to be settled by Europeans, hunting and habitat loss chipped away at the wolves. In North Carolina, court records tally bounties paid to wolf hunters from 1768 to 1789. By 1970 the red wolf population had dwindled to less than 100 animals roaming a small section of coastal Texas and Louisiana. "They darn near disappeared before we knew anything about them," said Fazio.

"a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it"
"Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?"
I'm wondering this morning why I'm finding this Pope's long goodbye so affecting. I'm not Roman Catholic; I'm more secular than not; I'm Left, not Right. I've written how the first John Paul, had he been allowed to serve his natural term, would have swept the Curia and the Vatican Bank of the corruption and the paedo-fascist Masonic conspirators he was shocked to find, which is precisely why he served all of a month. The second John Paul has seemed, rather, a pained enabler of the Luciferian excesses sheltered in the Church's "conservative" wing, while devoting the bulk of his energies to stamping out perceived liberal threats and liberation theologies. So why should the thought of Karol Wojtyla's Last Rights choke me up?
I'm thinking, perhaps, it's the same reason Bob Dylan has always affected me. Both have a burdensome vision of the Hell that's opening up beneath our feet, though they often haven't known what to do with their vision besides cradle their heads and lament. And I suppose I can relate to that.

75. Mexican Wolf Born In The Wild
“The birth of a wolf pup in the wild is an occasion to be celebrated,” Parsons said. Of the eleven original wolves released, seven remain in the wild.
http://news.fws.gov/articles/Mexicanwolfborn.html
Mexican Wolf Born in the Wild
NOTE: This is a article from the September/October 1998 issue of the Fish and Wildlife News On July 15, Service biologists in the Apache National Forest, near Alpine, Arizona, made an exciting discovery: the first Mexican gray wolf pup born in the wild in the United States in nearly 50 years. As wolf recovery biologist Wendy Brown told it, her colleagues spotted two Mexican gray wolves emerging from some trees “with a puffball following them. Looking through their field glasses, they saw it was a pup. The parents crossed a creek, but the pup stopped and whined. Then the parents coaxed it across.” The pup, about nine to eleven weeks old at the time, was estimated to weigh about 15 pounds, Brown said. Though its parents had kept close to their den in May, biologists were unable to confirm that any young had survived. The sighting came as a happy and dramatic surprise after hopes of finding any surviving pups had diminished. “Having a pup survive to this point in the first year of the reintroduction effort is great news,” said Southwest Regional Director Nancy Kaufman. “It’s the first Mexican wolf born in the wild in the United States since the 1950s, and is thus a symbol of hope and progress in restoring wolves to their rightful place in Southwestern forests.” Success has been tinged by tragedy, however, as wolf #174, the pup’s mother, was apparently killed by a mountain lion in early August. She was found lying just five yards from an elk calf carcass that appeared to have been killed by a mountain lion. The mountain lion had been seen in the area previous to the killing.

Their dream of a new life in California ends suddenly when a stranger walks into their camp and shoots Rachel and William McKensie. Several days later, gold prospector Max Phillips discovers the bodies, along with an unfinished letter from Rachel McKensie to her sister back east. The letter mentions Rachel's three-year-old daughter, but there is no sign of the child's body at the campsite. Max and a motley band of miners search in vain for the little girl. Alone in the wilderness, Sarah would surely die if not for a she-wolf named Wauna, whose newborn pups have been slaughtered by the same man who killed Sarah's parents. The grieving wolf adopts Sarah, who is accepted as an equal, if decidedly odd, member of Wauna's pack. Though Sarah lacks the speed, fangs and keen sense of smell of her packmates, she more than makes up for it with her intelligence. Armed with a scavenged hunting knife, Sarah becomes a formidable hunter. Over the years a legend emerges about a savage child often seen in the company of wolves. Max wonders if this semi-mythical "wild angel" could be the long-lost Sarah McKensie. Max mounts a new search for the girl, hoping to rescue Sarah and reunite her with relatives. He's aided by a prosperous local businessman named Jasper Davis, whose motives are entirely different. Jasper is concerned that there may yet be a living eyewitness to his past crimes.

Patrick Reusse: Wild might have what Wolves need
Patrick Reusse, Star Tribune July 23, 2005 The Wild attempts to summon the press to St. Paul more often than Mike Hatch. The hockey team decided the NHL's official return was such monumental news that two media sessions were required. On Friday, the reaction of the hockey people was offered at Xcel Energy Center, and today the marketing department will offer its plan at Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub in St. Paul. Through four seasons, the marketeers were the stars of the operation, selling out every game, even as the league's longtime followers were railing that the NHL game was being suffocated by boredom. The Wild will offer sugary tributes and a few doodads for the customers as a response to management's lockout. You can also expect a rollback in ticket prices and why not?

http://www.botany.uwc.ac.za/Envfacts/facts/african_dog.htm
The African wild dog, also known as the Cape hunting dog, is Africa's most endangered carnivore. The term endangered means that it is in danger of extinction and unlikely to survive if the factors causing its decline in numbers continue. Its endangered status is the result of direct persecution by people. The African wild dog is a gregarious, pack-living animal with behaviour similar to that of the well known wolf of the northern hemisphere. The wild dog has a similar role in nature to that of the wolf in that it removes weak and unhealthy animals from the prey population. Like the wolf, the wild dog has been persecuted unrelentlessly. The African wild dog is a slim, long-legged animal about the size of an Alsatian dog. Its coat is a dappled combination of tan, black and white - each individual having a unique pattern. They differ from true dogs and wolves in that they have only four, not five, toes on each foot. Their large rounded ears are characteristic and contribute to an extremely acute sense of hearing. LIFE IN THE PACK Wild dogs live in closely knit packs of up to 15 adults together with their young. Each pack has one dominant female and one dominant male. Usually only these two will mate and produce offspring. All pack members cooperate in the rearing of pups.

Hedgehogs, pythons and tigers are nonnative animals, so are considered "exotic" animals (in North America). The URL for this file is: http://www.tarakharper.com/an_anim.htm
