Over the past few years, the Park Service has closely monitored interactions between visitors and the Toklat (also known as East Fork) and

Wolf Behavior Around People in Denali National Park
At Friends of Animals, we acknowledge that wolves have inherent value-that is, their individual lives, their futures, and their freedom have meaning and value to them, regardless of whether we deem them endangered or plentiful in numbers, and whether or not we see them and believe they are beautiful. In the following essay, we provide our readers with the view of an independent scientist whose research we support. Dr. Gordon Haber provides us with a perspective on the complex issues that arise when park visitors and wolves use the same areas. NPS gave implied consent to visitors to use virtually any weapon available on a wolf perceived-accurately or not-to be dangerous. It began experimenting with its own, mostly covert, aversive measures, including shooting at wolves with a paintball gun and luring them to a boobytrapped tent where a pepper spray discharge awaited. Never mind that not a single instance of any such aggressive wolf behavior has been reported in Denali. Forget the permanent damage that could be done to a wolf by a blow to the head with a rock or from using pepper spray on highly tuned sensory organs.
Are Denali wolves behaving unnaturally?

European Wolves
European wolves, as most all others, live and hunt in packs which are extended families of an alpha (the dominant male), his mate, and their offspring. They usually stay within a home range, but may wander far outside their territory to hunt. They hunt and kill game up to 10 times heavier than their own weight. Wild reindeer, elk, and red deer are their favorite prey. European wolves will also eat much smaller animals such as mice and frogs. Because of the decline in the number of wild game, they have begun to prey on domestic horses, cattle, and dogs. Starving wolves will even eat potatoes, fruits, buds, and lichen.
The alpha male and female mate between January and March. The cubs are born seven weeks later in a den dug among bushes or rocks. The male brings food back to the den, either by carrying it whole or by swallowing and then regurgitating it for the others to eat. As the cubs grow, the mother and other members of the pack help to feed them.
Few European countries still have substantial numbers of wolves. Wild wolves are hard to count, so exact numbers are not known. Sometimes radio-tracking is used to determine their numbers. European wolves have managed to survive only in the most remote, mountainous, or densely forested regions. Areas in which these wolves can live without coming into conflict with humans are decreasing. There is little effective international agreement about the wolf's conservation. All efforts to preserve the wolf are conducted locally.

Jonathan Scott was born in London (1949) and brought up on a farm in Berkshire. He went to school at Christ's Hospital in Sussex before attending the Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland where he took an Honours degree in Zoology (1972). Jonathan traveled overland from London to South Africa in 1974 and has lived in Kenya since 1976. He has spent much of the last 28 years on safari in East Africa, primarily in the Masai Mara National Game Reserve in southwest Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania, which together form the greatest stronghold of predators and prey anywhere in Africa. Between 1982 and 1984 Jonathan traveled to Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia as a co-presenter for the popular American television series Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. By the time Jonathan's second book was published in 1985 he felt confidant enough to write the text himself. The Leopard's Tale was the first detailed account of a wild leopard and her cubs, providing a unique insight into the life of these enigmatic predators. Between 1986 and 1988 Jonathan spent months at a time living in the Serengeti, often sleeping in his car so that he could follow the great wildebeest migration on its annual journey between the southern Serengeti's short grass plains and their dry season refuge in the Masai Mara. During this period he wrote two books - The Great Migration and Painted Wolves: Wild Dogs Of The Serengeti-Mara, and in 1987 was the overall winner in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award for his photograph of a wild dog catching a wildebeest.
