Endangered Species. Making a Comeback Gray Wolves Gray wolves wolves arenot only gray. They can actually range in color from white to black.
http://www.greenscreen.org/newsletter/articles/GrayWolves.html
E.Q. Says:
Recently the federal government proposed taking the gray wolf off the endangered species lists in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The status of the gray wolf may also be "downlisted" from endangered to threatened in Maine, New York, and Montana. However, its cousin, the red wolf, or Canis rufus, continues to be endangered. The red wolf is smaller than the gray wolf and larger than a coyote, weighing about 40 to 66 pounds. It has reddish or grayish fur and is native to the southeastern United States. Through a conservation effort, it is being re-introduced into Tennessee and the Carolinas.
by Tin Mai
Gray wolves wolves are not only gray. They can actually range in color from white to black. But gray is the predominant color. A mature gray wolf, or Canis lupus, is good-sized, generally weighing between 75 to 115 pounds. This is enormous compared to a coyote whose weight is closer to 35 pounds. The foot print or "track" of the wolf is about 5 inches long whereas the track of the coyote is only 3 inches long. Over time, the gray wolf has had the greatest distribution of any mammal other than humans in North America.

    Hello,Welcome To Endangered Species- Wolves
The wolf has been one of the most misunderstood and mistreated animals in all of history. It seems to be a never ending battle, for these precious wolves to try to survive. The main reason the ranchers claim for the past slaughter of wolves, was to keep the wolf from intruding on farm lands, livestock, etc. The truth of the matter is,the need to make the wolf their prized trophy, played a major role in the wolves rapid decline thru out many decades. In the past the wolf has been hunted down and torchered out of fear and ignorance. In the present the torcher still goes on,so does the ignorance.

  • There were bounties put on the wolf.
  • Wolves were deliberately infected with a parasitic skin disease,(to control the wolf population).
  • At one time wolves were burned alive.
  • In the present-there's still illegal shootings of the wolves.

Arctic Wolves - Introduction
webshots
Twofold Photos, Inc. Arctic wolves are the safest mammals on earth, largely because they live in the most inhospitable regions of the planet. They are concentrated in North America, mainly along its polar edge, and in Greenland, where few humans adventured throughout history. However, some species can be found in Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada. Arctic Wolves (Canis Lupus Arctos) are in many ways similar to their Grey cousins, which can be found almost all the way across the western hemisphere. Because Arctic wolves haven't dealt with humans as much as their gray counterparts have, they react in a specific way, should a human appear within their range. While most grey wolves seek safety either in attack or in flight, an Arctic wolf may simply stand still and stare. This can even contribute to establishing long-term contacts with animals and befriending them. A senior research scientist of the Biological Resources Division, managed to spend several summers in a company of Arctic Wolves. He even had his boots unlaced by one of them. Because of lack of access, there have been few opportunities for a careful study of this subspecies. Therefore, little is known about their history and evolution. But their kinship with gray species is evident, because Arctic Wolves retain great similarity with those.

Why do wolves howl?

What do wolves look like? Wolves superficially resemble German shepherd or malamute dogs. However, wolves have longer legs, bigger feet, bigger heads and longer snouts than do similar sized dogs. Wolves vary a great deal in size, with most males weighing between 32 and 45 kilograms (50-100 pounds) and females weighing between 24 and 41 kilograms (40-90 pounds). In general, wolves found at higher latitudes are larger than the wolves found at lower latitudes. The largest wolf ever recorded was captured in Alaska and weighed 175 pounds. From the tip of the nose to the end of the tail, male wolves measure between 1.5 to 1.9 meters (5 to 6.5 feet) and females measure between 1.3 and 1.8 meters (4.5 to 6 feet). Wolves come in a variety of colours, ranging from pure white to solid black, although most are a grizzled grey-brown colour, like the one in the photo below. Wolves tend to have very thick coats that consist of a soft, insulating undercoat and a layer of long guard hairs which repel moisture. Wolves that live in warm regions in southern Eurasia and North America tend to have thinner coats than ones that live in northern regions. Most wolves have golden-yellow eyes.

Myth/Stories
eCards Free Webmail ... Home Games Jigsaw Puzzles Why are Wolves endangered? main page There are many reasons why wolves are endangered, Most people used to be afraid of wolves and thought they were dangerous to humans. For a long time, people would get money for bringing in a dead wolf. This was called bounty hunting (between 1850 and 1900 more that a million wolves were killed. In 1907 the call was given for the total extinction of the species.) People also use to poison wolves, poisoning is probably the main reason there are so few wolves left today. Myth and Superstition The Middle Ages in Europe was a time of growing enlightenment and crushing superstition. A belief in werewolves was widespread. The Roman Church exploited this sinister image of the wolf and, during the years of the Inquisition, used the peoples' fear of werewolves to maintain secular control. When the European settlers arrived in America, they brought this dark wolf of their imaginings with them. In contrast the indigenous people of North America both admired and emulated the wolf. The Native Americans respected the wolf's hunting abilities and honored him because he provided food for the community at large-the fox, the coyote, and the raven.

Wolves in Alaska are not listed under the ESA. Endangered means a species is considered in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range, and threatened means a species may become endangered in the foreseeable future. Regions of Yellowstone, central Idaho and the Southwest are designated as non-essential experimental populations, which isolate geographically-described groups from other existing populations and offer special regulations. DESCRIPTION: Wolves range in color from grizzled gray or black to all-white. As the ancestor of the domestic dog, the gray wolf resembles German shepherds or huskies. SIZE: The wolf is the largest member of the canine family. On average, wolves stand 26 to 32 inches at the shoulder and weigh 55 to 115 pounds. Females are usually slightly smaller than males. POPULATION:
There are an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 wolves in Alaska and more than 3,500 in the lower 48 states. Around the world there are an estimated 200,000 in some 57 countries, compared to up to 2 million in earlier times.

Easier - A wolf is a wild animal that looks like a dog. Wolves are in the same family as pet dogs. Wolves live in remote forests. They hunt in packs and feed on deer, elk, and reindeer. Harder - A wolf is a carnivorous mammal. When hunting, they often howl as a signal to other wolves in their pack. Females have four to six pups each spring. In many areas, the wolves are nearly gone because they were killed by humans. Wolf recovery programs are reintroducing wolves to remote forests. Many people such as ranchers are unhappy about these wolves. They say that the wolves will kill their cattle and sheep. Others see the reintroduction as important in reestablishing a balance in nature. International Wolf Center at Ely, Minnesota

Introduction
The gray or timber wolf's story is one of the most compelling tales of American wildlife. Once, the wolf was plentiful in most of North America, but it was hunted ruthlessly. Today, the wolf is making a successful comeback in some of its former habitat. The gray wolf plays a vital role in the health and proper functioning of ecosystems. Photos:
A wolf howl seldom lasts more than five seconds, but others in the pack may take it up.
Latin Name: Canis lupus Family Name: Canidae (Canine) Related Species: The Mexican wolf ( Canis lupus baileyi ) is being restored in the Southwest. The red wolf ( Canis rufus ) is a smaller wolf located in the Carolinas. Estimated Population: There are approximately 2,500+ gray wolves in Minnesota, 321 in Michigan, 335 in Wisconsin, 81 in Montana, 271 in Yellowstone National Park, 285 in Idaho, 7,500-10,000 in Alaska and 57,000 in Canada. In Arizona and New Mexico, there are approximately 55 Mexican wolves. Endangered Status: The gray wolf is listed as a threatened species on the U.S. Endangered Species List. Wolves in the Greater Yellowstone area and central Idaho are listed as threatened, nonessential. The Mexican wolf is listed as endangered, nonessential.

Description:
Common Name: Mexican Gray Wolf
Scientific Name: Canis lupus baileyi
Nickname: Lobo The Mexican Gray Wolf is a warm-blooded mammal. The Mexican Gray Wolf is a large dog-like carnivore.  The coat on the wolf is a mixture of brown, rust, black, gray, and white.  Mexican Gray Wolves have a distinct white lip line, chin and throat.  Adult gray wolves are around three feet tall and almost 6 and 1/2 feet long.  They weigh about 100 pounds.  Females are about 6 feet long and weigh 50-75 pounds. They will eat a mouse or a moose and everything in-between. Their most common food though is deer, moose, elk, and occasionally rabbits, beavers, hares, and other small rodents. Wolves have a dominance order that they follow.  Every member has a place and if they get out of line the alpha male or female growls at the subordinate, bares his or her fangs, and sometimes gives a harmless nip on the scruff of the neck.  The ranking determines how the wolves are treated, who gets to eat first, and which pair mates. There are usually seven or eight wolves to a pack, but they can have more than 20 members.  The leaders of the pack, or a wolf family, are called the alpha male and the alpha female.  They tend to be the strongest and most experienced wolves in the pack. The leaders are not tyrants; they simply guide the family, determine when they should hunt, select the rendezvous site and home territory, lead the hunt, and charge to the front if they have to defend the young wolves against bears or other predators.  The leaders are responsible and put themselves in the most danger.

for National Geographic News September 27, 2002 The Ethiopian wolf ( Canis simensis ) is the most endangered species in the group of animals known as canids. The biggest threat comes from rabies and other diseases carried by dogs in the wolves' mountainous habitat, but researchers now think it may be possible to develop a vaccine that could dramatically help the species' survival. Based on a complex computer model, the scientists say it might be possible to prevent the wolf's extinction by vaccinating only 20 percent to 40 percent of the known populations. The elegant and long-legged animal with reddish-orange fur lives in the alpine regions of Ethiopia, 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) or so above sea level. It is also known as the Simien jackal or the Abyssinian wolf. The Ethiopian wolf has become so rare that any rescue plan must be implemented soon, researchers argue.
