Are Wolves Endangered?
The wolf in the contiguous 48 United States has been placed on the federal government's list of endangered species, which includes both threatened (it may become endangered) and endangered (a species, subspecies or population in danger of extinction) populations. In Minnesota, the wolf is considered by the federal government to be threatened, whereas elsewhere in the 48 states it is considered fully endangered. Classifying the status of animals is a judgment call. In some cases, the judgment is easy. For example, with California condors, of which there are fewer than a dozen, there is not a question but that they are endangered. With other species, the problem is far more complex. The wolf fits into this category. Worldwide, wolves were once distributed everywhere north of about 20 degrees N. latitude which runs through Mexico City and southern India. However, they have been exterminated over perhaps half of their former range. In many countries, the wolf has long been gone. However, there are still some 50,000 wolves in Eurasia, and about 50,000 in Canada, and about 4,000-6,000 in Alaska. Mexico has less than a dozen. In the 48 contiguous states, Minnesota supports a population of 1,550 to 1,750, and as of 1992, wolves seem to be increasing both in their numbers and distribution. There are 40-50 wolves in Wisconsin and 6-10 in mainland Michigan. Isle Royale has 12 (spring 1992). Montana supports about 30 wolves, and Idaho, perhaps a half dozen. The state of Washington currently has a few known breeding packs, which were discovered in 1990.

2. Gray Wolf
IUCN Status Endangered There are approximately 2 500 gray wolves in the lower 48 states and about 10 000 in Alaska.

Are Gray Wolves Endangered? Updated May 2005 The gray wolf in the contiguous 48 United States has long been on the federal government's list of endangered species, which includes both threatened and endangered populations. In the Eastern and Western distinct population segments (DPS), the gray wolf is considered by the federal government to be threatened, whereas it is considered fully endangered the Southwestern DPS. In Alaska the gray wolf thrives in such numbers that it is neither threatened nor endangered. Classifying the status of animals is a judgment call. In some cases, the judgment is easy. For example, the California condor population includes only a few remaining members and is clearly endangered. With other species, such as the gray wolf, the situation is far more complex.

4. Red Wolf
IUCN Status Endangered Pure red wolves are thought to be extinct in the wild.

Why are Wolves Endangered? There are many reasons, Most people used to be afraid of wolves and thought they were dangerous to humans. For a long time, people would get money for bringing in a dead wolf. This is called bounty hunting (between 1850 and 1900 more that a million wolves were killed. In 1907 the call was given for the total extinction of the species.)
Famous Wolf Bounty Hunters
Ben Corbin. Ben Corbin was a hunter who worked the Dakota Territory and was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of wolves. He was also the author of Corbins; or The Wolf Hunter's Guide, a book published in 1900 that became the bounty-hunters' bible. Corbin called the wolf "the enemy of the state."
Roy T. McBride. Probably the most famous modern-day trapper is Roy T. McBride, who was responsible for trapping Las Margaritas in Mexico.
Las Margaritas. This wolf was one of the last outlaw wolves, taken in 1970. Las Margaritas was named after the ranch of the same name in northern Mexico, a favorite haunt of the wolf. He had lost two toes on his front left paw, and was leery of efforts to trap him for many years. Roy T. McBride finally caught the wolf after almost a year of efforts
McBride was the trapper chosen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to live-trap the last few wolves in Mexico for the Mexican wolf captive breeding program. He is probably the only bounty-hunter to possess a master's degree in biology.

Wolves in folklore
In many ancient myths, the wolf was portrayed as brave, honourable and intelligent. The best examples of these myths are the Native Americans. The wolf was also the revered totem animal of ancient Rome - Romulus and Remus and Lupercalia. In Proto-Indo-European society, the wolf was probably associated with the warrior class and the term was subject to taboo . Many Germanic personal names used to include “wolf”.
In more modern western folklore, the wolf is a creature to be feared. Examples of this image are the Werewolf and the Big Bad Wolf. Norse mythology includes several malevolent wolves - the giant Fenrisulfr, eldest child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, who was feared and hated by the Aesir, and his children Skoll and Hati, who devour the sun and moon at Ragnarok.
Human fear of the wolf is responsible for most of the trouble the species face and have faced. However, in the 20th century, with the new knowledge of wolves and the growing respect for the animal, the fear seems to have reduced. Despite their often negative image, wolves have variously been credited with adopting, nursing and raising human feral children, the most famous examples being Romulus and Remus and Mowgli of The Jungle Book.

    4.XI.2004
[OUT-OF-DATE] According to news from Slovakia ( see below ) we suggest to organize on 9th november 2004 the international day of pro-wolf actions - The Wolfish Action Day. If you are in touch with any wildlife defenders organization, try to organize a piquet near Slovak Embassy or Consulate in your country/city. If it is impossible to do it, sent a fax/letter to the Slovak Embassy/Consulate and demand to stop shooting. We also ask you to send appropriate protest letters ( addresses below ). If you know for sure that there is organized a piquet in your country/city, send information about it to n13@blebla.indyw.most.org.pl (delete "blebla." from mail address) with a subject "ULV - action". Inform us where this demonstration is going to be and what organizations are making this piquet. UPDATE: How do to help yet?
