he area that would become Wisconsin was originally claimed as part of New France by French fur traders and missionaries in the 1600's. Jean Nicolet, who reportedly was the first European to reach Wisconsin, landed on the Green Bay shore of Door County in 1634. French influence was greatest at the fur trading posts along Wisconsin waterways, but actual control remained largely in the hands of local Indians during this period. Great Britain acquired Wisconsin at the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763. The British built first and made the area part of Quebec Province.
The American Revolution forced Britain to cede the area to the United States in 1783. Actual British control of the area did not end, however, until 1814, following the conclusion of the War of 1812. As a U.S. territory, Wisconsin was initially governed by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, and then by the laws of Indiana Territory, Illinois Territory, Michigan Territory and finally, on July 4, 1836, Wisconsin Territory, as surrounding territories broke away to become states and join the Union. Initially, Wisconsin Territory included all of modern Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas. The first legislature met at Belmont and the second at Burlington, Iowa. Shortly thereafter, the portion of the territory west of the Mississippi River became Iowa Territory, and Madison became the capital of Wisconsin Territory.Wisconsin was admitted to the Union as the 30th state on May 29, 1848. On May 29, 1998, Wisconsin marked the sesquicentennial of its statehood.

Visit our Profiler Forum and ask Colleen what possible career path
you should follow! Q Colleen, My mom works for Coldwell Realtors and she loves it. I think she really wants me to follow in her footsteps but I'm not really sure if selling real estate is for me. I know she makes pretty good money and that's important to me but I don't know if I have the people skills that she does. I'm shy. What other careers are there in the real estate business? Thanks A Dear Real Estate Introvert, Your shyness is definitely a consideration in choosing a career in the Real Estate Agent / Broker field. This is a career where you will be working with many people and it can be highly competitive. You must work with the buyers and sellers of a home, counsel them on the value of property, the type of property they are interested in, give tours of open houses, and usually hand-walk clients through the maze of actually closing on a house. It can be very rewarding work when you help a young couple finally purchase the home of their dreams!

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Mathematics Department Website ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers a liberal arts major, leading to a bachelor of science or bachelor of arts in mathematics from the College of Letters and Sciences, or a teaching major, leading to a bachelor of science in education from the College of Education. The liberal arts degree requires 35 credits in mathematics and 15 elective credits selected from a concentration in the student's area of interest. Popular options are algebra, analysis and statistics. Many students also show interest in actuarial science. By selecting courses in statistics, analysis, computer science and actuarial mathematics, students are well prepared to take several beginning actuarial examinations before graduation. The teaching major requires 36 credits and six elective credits in mathematics to strengthen a particular area of interest. Both degree choices provide students with a strong background for advanced study at the graduate level. Each program offers students a basic core of ideas which serve as the basis for study in a specialized area of mathematics.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Mathematics majors have a wide variety of courses to choose from to design a program of study that meets their particular career paths. Careers may be found in the following areas:
