War is Fun as Hell
Submitted by Sheldon Rampton on Wed, 07/27/2005 - 05:13.
Topics: war/peace Gamers line up for their turn to practice shooting people in the America's Army booth at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Years of writing about public relations and propaganda has probably made me a bit jaded, but I was amazed nevertheless when I visited America's Army , an online video game website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In its quest to find recruits , the military has literally turned war into entertainment America's Army " offers a range of games that kids can download or play online. Although the games are violent, with plenty of opportunities to shoot and blow things up, they avoid graphic images of death or other ugliness of war, offering instead a sanitized, Tom Clancy version of fantasy combat. One game, Overmatch , promises "a contest in which one opponent is distinctly superior ... with specialized skills and superior technology ... OVERMATCH: few soldiers, certain victory" (more or less the same overconfident message that helped lead us into Iraq).

Below is a list of U.S. medical schools that still use live animals to teach basic concepts in human physiology, pharmacology, and/or surgery. Two-thirds of all U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford and Yale, have eliminated these old-fashioned laboratories in favor of modern, cost-effective and humane alternatives. Please write to your local universities and alma mater to express your concerns about these crude exercises. Please note that this list includes only schools that use live animal laboratories to train medical students, and does not refer to basic research that may be conducted at medical schools and universities. Answer Book ... Community pages Attack on milk is food police folly 5:41 PM 5/02/04 The center, which periodically raises a ruckus about supposedly unhealthful foods, is now blaming the dairy industry for endangering the health of American children. What is this awful threat from the dairy industry? Milk. Yes, organize the demonstrations and file the lawsuits. We must save the children - from milk. Not all milk. Just whole milk and 2 percent. Skim milk and 1 percent are apparently OK. The center is aghast because a variety of choices means that some of the milk offered in schools might be - dare we say it? - 2 percent or even whole milk. Egad! What are we to do? Moderation would do the Center for Science in the Public Interest some good, too. Blaming the dairy industry for giving schoolchildren a variety of milk selections takes food police foolishness to an extreme.
