Press Release WISCONSIN PRESERVATION PIONEER EARNS NATIONAL HONORS
For Decades, George Meyer Has Fought for
Preservation In Wisconsin (Washington, D.C., October 18, 2000) - George Meyer doesn't mess around. When his bill to control the sandblast-cleaning of historic buildings was making its way through the Wisconsin legislature, he could have given lectures. He could have circulated petitions. Instead, the day the state senate was due to decide on the issue, senators arrived at work to find a brick on each desk in the house. Half the brick was sandblasted; half was cleaned in a preservation-friendly way. No one could deny the damage sandblasting caused, and the bill sailed straight to the Governor's desk.
George Meyer,
Milwaukee, WI Meyer has practiced creative preservation for decades, showing rather than telling. The National Trust today announced it will recognize Meyer with a 2000 National Preservation Honor Award. National Trust President Richard Moe will present the award on Thursday, Nov. 2, during the National Trust's National Preservation Conference in Los Angeles. "George Meyer is a role model for all preservationists," Moe said. "Whether encouraging the rebirth of blighted downtowns, rescuing historic rural barns, or working behind the scenes to change public policy, his ideas have gone beyond Wisconsin to become national models. Preservation needs a George Meyer in every state."

Restoration of Historic African-American Armory
Wins National Preservation Honor Award (Washington, D.C., October 18, 2000) - The Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville could have been just another story of urban blight and decline. But this African-American district chose hope over apathy and rallied around its most cherished landmark, the crumbling Eighth Regiment Armory.
The Armory Before Restoration The 1914 building, headquarters for the African-American "Fighting Eighth," which fought in the 1916 border conflicts with Mexico, was the first U.S. Armory built for a regiment trained and commanded entirely by African Americans. After being decommissioned in the 1950s and standing vacant for almost 50 years, it has been transformed into a public military academy and an anchor for the district's rebirth. Today the academy houses an 800-seat auditorium, a drill hall, gun range, 20 classrooms, two libraries, and the nation's first museum of African-American military achievement. The school is the first military academy in Chicago's public school system. The National Trust today announced it will recognize the project with a 2000 National Preservation Honor Award. National Trust President Richard Moe will present the award on Thursday, Nov. 2, during the National Trust's National Preservation Conference in Los Angeles.

E-Mail This Article Published on Saturday, January 17, 2004 by the Boston Globe Facing Questions, Clark Backs Army School by Joanna Weiss CONCORD, N.H. Retired General Wesley K. Clark sometimes downplays his Army background, and criticizes the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays. But there is one military institution he vigorously defends: the controversial academy once known as the US Army School of the Americas. Opposition to the school, which trains military officers from Latin American countries, has long been a cause celebre among some Democrats and liberal activists, who say the academy has trained some of the most notorious criminals of the region and teaches skills that Latin American armies sometimes use against their own citizenry. Supporters of the school point to reforms from the 1990s, and say its courses teach foreign soldiers about democracy and human rights. Also See:

Notes from Jeanne Bloom
I am late to this discussion, but had a great newspaper piece from Wisconsin that I thought Rene might find of interest. My own experience with one-room school houses was in the mid-60s in Allen County. Although I was from the "city", our 4-H club met at Prairie Dell School, a one-room school house southeast of Iola and across from the airport. I believe Prairie Dell was in operation until the State mandated unified school districts and the students were bused into town. Hope that you find this of interest and I will keep my eyes open for any other one-room school house information. The Antigo Daily Journal, Antigo, Wisconsin, May 18, 1935, page 5
Larzelere House Oldest Dwelling In County Still Used!
Back in 1871, six years before F. A. Deleglise located the site of Antigo, Henry Larzelere, a lumber cruiser, drove a team of horses down the old military road in the eastern part of the county and built a dwelling house and hotel on the banks of the Wolf river at what is now known as Langlade. Today that building is still standing, being occupied now by the Harry Gelb grocery store and tavern. It is the oldest dwelling still standing in Langlade County, and one of the oldest in this part of the state.

(CBS/AP) The Army suspended recruiting efforts Friday after reported excesses by recruiters trying to make up for a shortfall in new soldiers.
The one-day suspension was to allow commanders to emphasize ethical conduct and "refocus our entire force on who we are as an institution," said Maj. Gen. Michael D. Rochelle, the chief of Army recruiting, to reporters at the Pentagon.
Army officials said the stand-down would affect almost all 7,500 recruiters at 1,700 stations around the United States. Rochelle said the daylong halt could cost the service access to 1,000 potential recruits. CBS News has reported that from asking teens to lie to their parents to guiding them through duping the drug-test system and forging documents , recruiters will go to many lengths to get young people to enlist. One Houston-area recruiter was

Advice from the grass-roots People from all over the country have been writing in to the Leave My Child Alone campaign to share their enthusiasms, outrage and suggestions. Including Stephan from San Diego, who had the following to share: Here are my recommendations to change the law, and suggested policies for school boards. 1) I would change the system to opt-in. 2) I would subject the military to the same laws that telemarketers have ( i.e. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991). 3) I would prohibit recruiters from blocking Caller ID, and must honor any call blocks set my the called party. 4) I would require the military to purge names from their recruiting lists, if one requests, or limit the contact to written contact. 5) I would prohibit schools from pressuring kids to join. 6) I would prohibit contests or other activities for fun that are hidden recruiting activites, and for all recrutiing activites on campuses be disclosed to students. I would even go as far as limiting these types of activities to JROTC students, and those who opt-in.
