Providence Solves Privacy Problem While several states, notably Ohio, have seen a decline in state funding for libraries, things are looking better in Wisconsin. Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, has recommended increases in library funding and the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee of the state legislature has approved two important measures. The committee 14-1 recommended a 5 percent increase in funding in state aid to library systems for 2006 and a 4.5 percent increase for 2007. Given a $14 million base, the measure would add $2 million. The committee also unanimously recommended a $150,000 increase in funding for BadgerLink, which supplies full-text databases to all Wisconsin residents.

    Community health advisory
Marquette has been informed by a local health department that a member of the faculty has tested positive for tuberculosis (TB). The faculty member lives off campus and it is not known at this time how the illness was contracted. The faculty member is currently under treatment.
The local health department has followed up to identify individuals who are deemed to be "close contacts.” Only eight individuals have been identified. So far, none of the close contacts have tested positive for TB. If any of them do, they will be given further tests to confirm whether or not they have a case of TB that requires further treatment.
We do not believe that any Marquette students, faculty or staff are at significant risk of having contracted TB. If you have not already been contacted by the local health department nurse, you are not considered to be at risk.

October 25, 1995, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon A) Introduction Good morning. I am delighted to participate in the opening session of your conference. I want to tell you right away that I have Wisconsin roots by marriage! Paul's father, Pastor Martin Simon, was baptized, confirmed and ordained in the Zion Lutheran Church in Zachow. Paul's great grandparents had no surprise here a Wisconsin dairy farm. We have many family members and friends here and we love your beautiful state. On a library level, let me say how pleased the Commission was last year to be able to work with Doug Zweizig, Chuck McClure and others on a study of public libraries and the Internet. Dr. Zweizig is one of this country's outstanding library educators and researchers and I hope you know how fortunate you are to have him in Wisconsin! I am pleased to report that we are once again working with Doctors Zweizig and McClure to re-survey the libraries first studied in 1994. We want to begin to develop longitudinal data, to learn how much connectivity to the Internet has increased since 1994, to discover what uses libraries make of the Internet and other electronic services, and to begin to explore what changes these electronic connections have for libraries and for their users. I hope that in the future the Commission can support these kinds of studies for other types of libraries as well.

An information literate student effectively accesses, evaluates, organizes, synthesizes and applies information from a variety of sources and formats in a variety of contexts. Information literacy requires an ongoing involvement in learning and in evaluating information so that life long learning is possible." Many research resources are available from the Internet in various electronic formats. Formally citing such resources, as with any research resource, is a necessary part of the completed work. Citation formats for Internet resources are still in development but there are many Internet sites that offer acceptable interpretations of guidelines in several styles such as APA, CBE, Chicago, MLA, and Turabian. A selection of these sites is listed below, organized by style. Most (but not all) of the sites include formats and/or examples of citations.
