LIBRARY INSTRUCTION IS ALIVE AND GROWING IN WISCONSIN
By Lisa J. Weikel The past half a year in Wisconsin libraries has seen many innovative ideas and much dedicated work in the realm of library instruction. Wisconsin is blessed with two fine library and information science schools as well as an active state library association, Wisconsin Library Association (WLA), and an effective library service organization, Wisconsin InterLibrary Services (WILS). These groups all contribute in various manners to the goal of improving library instruction. The University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Library and Information Studies offers a robust series of programs for professionals which often incorporate the theme of instruction. For instance, one of their most recent programs, "Training Staff to Use the Internet," was timely and useful to librarians puzzled as to how to train others in using this colossal tool. The two-day program covered Internet training issues, models, methods, skills, tools, and resources. For more information about specifics of the program, please contact Jane Pearlmutter at SLIS, 600 N. Park St., Madison, WI 54706; phone 608-262-6398; or jpearl@macc.wisc.edu.

Some state libraries purging records
Actions follow warning on Patriot Act
By LAWRENCE SUSSMAN
lsussman@journalsentinel.com
Last Updated: Oct. 6, 2003 The Wisconsin Library Association has warned libraries about the new federal Patriot Act, leading some to purge circulation records to protect privacy, and others to begin warning patrons about the law's effects. The warning came last spring in the form of a sample policy for the association's member libraries to use to "protect against the unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of library users." In recent months, the association has surveyed its members on what actions they've taken. At the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Cofrin Library, workers regularly delete records of requests for books or other material once those transactions are completed.

Beloit Public Library Board Policy Approved August, 1982 Amended August, 1985 Amended December, 1987 Amended June, 1994 Amended May, 1997
DISCARDING OF LIBRARY MATERIALS POLICY
Obsolescence, damage, normal wear and space limitations make the discarding of materials a continuing process. Factors, considered in discarding materials include: 1. Poor physical condition 2. Lack of use 3. Out of date information 4. Multiple copies of titles no longer in demand 5. Old editions replaced by later revisions Materials of local significance will ordinarily not be discarded even if they meet the above criteria. Final responsibility for deciding which materials to discard rest with the Library Director. He or she may delegate this authority to other members of the staff. Guides used by staff members in this process include standard library catalogs and lists such as The Reader's Advisor, Public Library Catalog, Children's Catalog, Fiction Catalog, and other similar publications. The staff also consults professional readings such as Evaluating and Weeding Collections in Small and Medium-sized Public Libraries. The library staff has adapted the CREW Method based on local use patterns. The resulting guidelines can be found in the library's Selection and Weeding Guidelines handbook.
