MISSION STATEMENT General Education
The Department contributes to the primary educational mission of the University by offering a wide array of courses meeting General Education and college degree requirements. As testimony to the breadth of the discipline, the Department offers courses satisfying both natural science and social science requirements. In fact, the Department's educational mission is somewhat unique since it is a discipline that covers and links natural science and social science dimensions in addressing human-environmental concerns. The housing of the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Minor and Urban and Area Development Minor in the Department confirms the broad and integrative nature of the discipline. Since 1876, the State of Wisconsin has been acquiring land to meet conservation and recreation needs. As of 1996, more than 1,290,000 acres have been acquired for use by all Wisconsin citizens and our state's visitors.

    BRITISH CARTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Donna Watkin receives an atlas, cash prize, and certificate from David Miller, National Geographic Maps. Donna Watkin, Oxford Brookes University, received a Highly Commended award for her map project on land use in Drayton St. Leonards from 1793 to 2003. Donna receives £200 (U.S. $370) and a National Geographic atlas. A Commended prize went to Izak P.J. Smith, University of Cambridge, for mapping the decline of rare herbivores in Kruger National Park, South Africa. He gets the new National Geographic African Adventure Atlas
    The award, in partnership with the British Cartographic Society (BCS), recognizes student achievement in the mapping sciences. The awards were presented during the annual BCS Symposium, this year at the University of Durham.
