Revised 11-13-97 Back to Bog Hopper Wisconsin Land and Life , edited by Robert C. Ostergren and Thomas R. Vale, University of Wisconsin Press, Madison. Hardcover, $69.95; softcover $27.95, 567 pages, 1997. Robert Ostergren and Thomas Vale are both professors of geography at the University of Wisconsin, and they have compiled a book with 26 chapters and 28 authors. All of the authors are geographers at Wisconsin. These topics are written as an exploration of the land and life of Wisconsin from the viewpoint of a geographer. The book is divided into three parts: Natural Environments and Wild Landscapes (7 chapters), Settlement Processes and Cultural Patterns (10 chapters), and Regional Economies and Landscapes (9 chapters). The first part deals with climate, vegetation, soil, water, and landform. The second part analyzes human habitation of localesoften from an historical viewpoint, and the third explores the interaction between people and nature and the forces of human habitation that affect economy and land. Glacial landscapes, moraines, and Wisconsin weather and climate are features peculiar to the state and provide the natural history necessary to appreciate natural plants and animals such as the white pine and the upland sandpiper. Understanding the geological formations in Wisconsin are basic to appreciating the landscape and the varied forested and prairie areas.

    Abbreviation:
WI The state's name is an English version of a French adaptation of an Indian name said to mean "the place where we live." In 1634, Frenchman Jean Nicolet became Wisconsin's first European explorer. The French controlled the area until 1763, when it was ceded to the British. In 1848, Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state. Wisconsin's natural beauty has made the state a favorite playground of the nation. Vacationers enjoy the state's clean lakes, rolling hills, quiet valleys, deep forests and cool, pine-scented breezes. The winters are ideal for skating, skiing, snowmobiling and tobogganing. Many communities stage curling matches during the winter and others hold snowmobile derbies. Many annual events celebrate the state's rich ethnic heritage and diversity. With the nickname "America's Dairyland," it's no surprise that Wisconsin is first in the country in the production of milk, cheese, and butter. In fact, the loyal fans of the Green Bay Packers football team call themselves "cheeseheads." Milwaukee, the state's largest city, helps make Wisconsin one of the largest manufacturing states in the nation.

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas. Census Regions and Divisions Counties (and equivalents) Minor Civil Divisions Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD.

      Andrew C. Riely,

      DOCUMENT TYPE: Article
      ABSTRACT:
In this study, I examine the agricultural geography of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the history of organic farming. I discuss economic and social factors in the spatial distribution of organic farming. Through field work, mapping, statistical analysis, and farmer surveys, I determined that organic farms cluster in southwestern Wisconsin and central Minnesota. Southwestern Wisconsin's hills limit row cropping, making the land available for organics (especially dairy operations.) The local CROPP cooperative is also a stron support. Finally, most organic farmers farm conventionally before switching to organic. Since they tend not to move, the change rarely affects location. HOME ABOUT HELP MY ACCOUNT ... SEARCH

    HISTORY
The area known as Wisconsin was first inhabited by various Indian tribes. The Chippewa, Menominee, Oneida, Potawatomi and Winnebago tribes lived in the area until the late 1800's. Wisconsin was “discovered” by Jean Nicolet in 1634, while looking for the Northwest Passage to China. In 1763, Wisconsin was part of the territory ceded by France to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris. Twenty years later, the British released their claim to Wisconsin.

Yi-Fu Tuan may be the most influential scholar you've never heard of By PETER MONAGHAN Madison, Wis. During the winter break of 1952, Yi-Fu Tuan and some Chinese graduate-school chums decided that they should be more all-American so they tried camping.

By morning, the elements had died down. Just as the sun rose to light a range of mountains across the valley, Mr. Tuan recalls, "I awoke to lunar beauty," to "a phantasmagoria of shimmering mauves, purples, and bright golds, theatrically illuminated."
He felt, he writes in Who Am I?: An Autobiography of Emotion, Mind, and Spirit (University of Wisconsin Press, 1999), "not only wonder but an intoxicating happiness." He was "in a supernal realm and yet, paradoxically, also at home, as though I had returned after a long absence."

    The Geographical Provinces of Wisconsin
    The Physical Geography of Wisconsin
The position of Wisconsin as one of the states on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River is its chief geographical asset, for, as was well said by Theodore Roosevelt, these states are "destined to be the greatest, the richest, the most prosperous of all the great, rich and prosperous commonwealths which go to make up the mightiest republic the world has ever seen." The capacity of this state for population depends chiefly upon topography , soil and climate, hence it will be of advantage to study the nature of the surface features of Wisconsin and their origin. The state of Wisconsin is located about a third of the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, near the northern boundary of the United States. It lies in what is commonly called the Middle West, between Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Its greatest length is 320 miles, its greatest width about 295 miles, and its area 56,066 square miles. Geology Wisconsin includes a large area of the oldest rocks, called
