The most notable physiographic feature of the state is its profusion of lakes, over 8,500, ranging in size from Lake Winnebago (215 sq mi/557 sq km) to tiny glacial lakes of surprising beauty. The Wisconsin River, with its extensive dam system, runs generally southward through the middle of the state until it turns west (just NW of Madison) to flow into the Mississippi, dividing the state into eastern and western sectors. Running a parallel course just to the east, Wisconsin's major watershed extends in a broad arc from north to south; to the east the Menominee, the Peshtigo, the Wolf, and the Fox rivers flow E and NE into Lake Michigan, while to the west the Chippewa, the Flambeau, and the Black rivers make their way to the Mississippi. Wisconsin's frontage on lakes Superior and Michigan as well as its many beautiful lakes and streams and its northern woodlands have made it a haven for hunters, fishermen, and water and winter sports enthusiasts. There are numerous state parks, forests, and two national forests. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Saint Croix and Lower Saint Croix national scenic rivers (see

The names, facts, and dates in our history books sometimes leave the impression that the past exists only on paper between two covers, but the past is actually all around us. With more than 100 centuries of human history behind us, crossing any bridge or hiking in any park we share the space with a Jesuit missionary or French fur trader. The original writing group was composed of fifteen 4th grade instructors from the Madison Metropolitan School District. Consultation and support was generously provided by The State Historical Society of Wisconsin - Office of School Services. Historical eras are presented with content foci, appropriate resources, relevant standards for 4th and 8th grades, and a list of all supplemental materials referenced. This is a work in progress and should grow with the knowledge of additional resources and the readers' passion and creativity for making additional connection with the content identified within the standards. MAPPING SCIENCES AT UW-RF? GEOGRAPHY is a field that uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand patterns of human activity and natural processes on the surface of the earth. Geographers are often called upon to analyze and solve problems that deal with interactions between people and the environment. Geography appeals to students who have a wide range of interests that involve human activities and their impacts on the natural environment. MAPPING SCIENCES are a set of techniques that include Cartography (the art and science of map making), GIS - Geographic Information Systems (the analysis of spatial patterns), and Remote Sensing (the analysis of satellite imagery). These techniques are useful in displaying, understanding, and analyzing spatial relationships. Many other disciplines, such as biology, business, marketing, criminal justice, land use planning, and urban studies utilize mapping techniques.
Studying geography and mapping sciences at UWRF provides the skills to engage in a variety of careers. Through a combination of coursework and internships students gain first hand experience in geographic analysis. The use of computer technologies, through GIS and mapping, are areas where students may develop additional expertise. The department offers a Major and a Minor in Geography, a Minor in Geographic Information Systems and Cartography, and a Major in Broad Field Social Studies (Geography)/Education.

Lake Michigan is one of the five North America n Great Lakes . It is bounded, in clockwise order from the south, by the US states of Indiana Illinois Wisconsin , and Michigan , which is named for it. Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes wholly within the borders of the US ; the others are shared with Canada . It has a surface area of 22,300 square miles ( 57750 square km ), making it the largest freshwater lake in the US, and the 5th largest lake in the world. It is 307 miles long by 118 miles wide. It greatest depth is 923 feet (281 m). It contains a volume of 4,918 cubic km of water. Its surface averages 580 feet above sea level, the same as Lake Huron , to which it is connected through the Straits of Mackinac . Geologically, Michigan and Huron are the same body of water. Both are part of the Great Lakes Waterway . In earlier maps of the region, the name "Lake Illinois" has been found in place of "Michigan".
